By far my favorite sushi place in Vancouver. The food is fresh and I’ve been going for ages! I love their gomaee sauce, especially used to dip an avocado-cucumber roll into.

Hime used to be the place for me around Point Grey, but not anymore. I’ve stopped going for over a year now. «Why» you ask: 1. I feel that the food quality, AND quantity has regressed(compared to 4yrs ago), but of coz the price stayed the same… especially the nabeyaki udon. The last time i had it, it was about 20% smaller, and the noodles were very hard, plus the soup was tasteless. 2. Also the last time i went, the waiter(girl) was pouring me some tea. I guess she got distracted by customers entering the store and kept pouring, so she over poured, got some on her hand, and effectively pour some smoking hot tea on my back. To me, this place is still on probation for another year before I would give it another chance.

I was excited to visit Hime because it’s one of the sushi joints that offers brown rice(it even offers black rice). Unfortunately, even though I ordered brown rice, it came as white rice. This is a small place — five seats at the sushi bar, only two«group» tables, and the rest are small two-seat tables. The two-seat tables are pretty close to each other. I had the edamame which was a little overcooked. The tuna tataki slices were very generous in size — about twice the size of regular sashimi slices(but thinner). They had the tuna slices soaking in some light sauce which sort of ruined it for me. The tuna was also barely seared. But, the quality of the tuna itself was very good. Finally, I had the«Crunch Munch» roll, which I figured(from its name) that it would be crispy. It wasn’t, really. It was essentially a dynamite roll. There wasn’t anything wrong with any of the food, of course, it just wasn’t great. Kind of average sushi, I’m afraid. The service was very good, though. Quick to refill the«tea»(read: «hot water»), they even pushed a spare table up to us when it was clear we’d need more space. And they were quick with the bill when we asked for it. They even separated the bill by default. I’d go again, especially if I could really get brown rice, but it’s nothing to write home about.

The spicy tuna sashimi here was very fresh and was covered in a Korean style spicy sauce – sweet, but lightly spicy. The Mexican roll was essentially a california roll but with spicy stuff mixed inside. It was a bit too salty too. The Ebi Sunomono was not as flavourful as in some of the other places I’ve tried. The Ika Karaage was quite good though! Very fresh. And miso soup was standard. In the end, we left full, but it wasn’t anything super special except for the spicy tuna sashimi and the ika karaage. But what made this place lose the«yay I’m a fan star» was the service. They totally forgot to give us tea and dishes for the soy sauce. :(And we had to flag them down halfway through our meal for that…
