I really don’t get it. I was in Vancouver on vacation and my group of six wanted sushi. A few places were closed(Sunday evening) but Hitoe was open and it had some decent reviews. First, the place is tiny. They only have two tables that can fit more than four people. So, we took our food to go. I can’t comment of the service so this review is all about the food. And it wasn’t great. Nothing tasted particularly fresh or flavourful. Our group has had A LOT of sushi in our life and this was nothing special. Really, meh. If you want sushi in Kitsilano, there are likely much better places.

Had time to kill around Vancouver before a flight and was craving sushi. Didn’t want anything too fancy but wanted some good sushi. This place was exactly what I had wanted

I was here today around 6:00pm with a party of three. They left us hanging for 15min and completely neglected us treating as an invisible people. I made an eye contact with one waitress finally and greeted with a frown to scold me to ask how many people we are. Horrible service. Will never come here again.

Want high-quality sushi, nicely presented, for a reasonable price? Hitoe is my favourite sushi place in Vancouver. The place itself is small and hidden behind a hand-written«Su-shi» sign, and it gets very crowded during the main lunch and dinner times, but they take reservations(in contrast to Ajisai). The sushi is super tasty and fresh, you can choose between different rice(normal, brown, black, gluten-free), and they always have some special sushi fish posted on the walls. I normally take these(recommended: herring and herring roe, and tako wasabi), or the wonderful chirashi don. I have never been disappointed!

The best thing about the west coast is that you truly can get high quality sushi without having to break bank. My lunch at Hitoe Sushi was the perfect example of this. I get it. You think I’m bias, as most reviews usually are. So I’m going to let the facts speak for itself. Lunch special: Uni, unagi and ikura don for $ 16. To translate, that’s sea urchin, eel and salmon roe on sushi rice for the price of your McDonald’s combo. Now if you also happen to be an economical hardcore sushi lover, holla at yo’ girl! Jks, but you should know what a sweet(shrimp sashimi) deal this is… Ok, just let me have that one. I was on a roll…(A sushi roll… …) Speaking of rolls… I also ordered another sushi lunch combo because this place was an economical hardcore sushi lover’s paradise. This combo($ 7) came with a California roll and 3 pieces of sushi(tuna, salmon and ebi), with the tuna sashimi being three times the length of your average slice of tuna sashimi. #heaven Fun Fact! California rolls on the west coast usually use chopped up crab meat vs. the red and white crab sticks some of you might be more familiar with. Service was super friendly too(thanks Dom!) and they even give you a pack of Pocky with your bill. If I lived in the west coast, I can definitely see myself being a regular at this place. If you’re still reading this and contemplating whether or not you should be hitting up this sushi joint… STOP. JUSTGO. You won’t be disappointed.

Authentic Japanese food in kitsilano and not for a bad price either. We tried the big unagi roll which was essentially a cali roll with unagi ontop but was quite tasty and simple. Also had the charity don and nabekayki udon which weren’t huge portions but again didn’t feel heavy in our stomachs. To compliment this, we got 3 yakitori which i thought were a bit expensive for the size but they tasted great and a takoyaki which i believe was homemade and a bit different from usual but still good. Overall, the prices are a bit high for the amount given but quality and clean flavours were presented in return.

The most expensive mediocre sushi I’ve had. I love sushi and this place is a block from my house so it’s unfortunate but I wouldn’t return. Friendly staff get the star. Tasteless food and extra charge for brown rice. $ 0.50 for each roll adds up fast. Disappointed.

I ordered the roll combo B which has the dynamite roll, California roll, and BC roll and i have to say it may be the worst sushi i have ever eaten! The rolls barely had any filling and for some reason there were two layers of rice which made it hard to eat. One thing i liked though is they give out a Japanese snack after you finish which is Pocky

This had good reviews, but that wasn’t our experience. The place smelled like fish, which should have been a sign. We got sushi roll combo and a variety of nigiri. The salmon wasn’t good, tasted old. Parts of the rice in my rolls was dry. And I didn’t feel well after. It’s one of the first times I didn’t come close to finishing a sushi meal. Bummer. Sorry, I recommend passing on this place. Or maybe I was just there on a bad night :/

ordered a few times here; fish is fresh and sushi tastes great. I also love the little pocky packets they give, it makes for a great little desert. Service is a little on the slow side though, you may need to wait for a bit.

I tried to book a reservation, and was told I would owe them a deposit of $ 10 per person if I was booking for the weekend, which racked up an $ 80 fee in my case. Whoever I was speaking to on the phone had a hard time explaining to me why that was. Simply because of this fee, I chose not to go here. Very frustrating. This review does not speak to the food or service, because I haven’t been to the restaurant, only spoken to a host on the phone.

My husband and I had dinner here on BC Day. The sign on the door said they’d open at 5:30 that day. When we arrived at 5:25, the place was already full and we got the last table. We ordered a variety of sashimi, a big negitoro roll, and miso soup. Everything was delicious. The miso was the best I’ve ever head — rich and complex flavour, with quite a bit of seaweed in the broth which was really good. The sashimi was very good, and was served with *real* wasabi, not the normal grated european horseradish tinted green that most places serve. We were given two packets of dark chocolate pocky with our bill. Yum! We were in and out in 45 minutes

Yum! We don’t get good fresh fish very often because of where we live, so we knew we had to have sushi while in Vancouver. This place did not disappoint. The sashimi sampler(big one $ 18.95), was superb and what a great price. Rainbow roll was huge and delish! Love the bits of fresh fruit on the platters too. Friendly, relatively fast service(it is sushi after all). We were in and out within an hour, and got a table midweek at about 12:10pm(although it was the last 4 top). Great lunch specials. I’d eat here once a week if I lived or worked nearby.

I came here based on the great reviews and pretty quickly regretted it. The menu was full of westernized menu items, the miso soup was like a salty stew, and the sushi presentation was ridiculous. Who decorates sushi with watermelon and mint??? But you know what, it was actually pretty good. The rice is a little heavily dressed, but properly cooked and fresh. The fish was decent, the rolls weren’t overly packed, and I think the wasabi might have actually been fresh grated. Wow! I realize that this sounds like faint praise, but I was actually quite impressed. The prices also seemed good to me. Basically every meal I’ve had in Vancouver has seemed ridiculously overpriced, so something that seems like a good deal is probably a crazily good deal by local standards. And yes, I rolled my eyes over the Pocky packet that came with the check(talk about bringing the class level down and the stereotypes up), but was very happy to eat it back at my hotel that night. So even that ended up as a net plus.

So their prices have gone up a dollar here and there, but their lunch specials are killer. It does get busy and fair warning, there is usually only one server and not many tables. I got the $ 7.95 Brown Rice Special(Avocado roll, 2 pieces of Inari, seaweed salad, and gomae) and the presentation was lovely. The portion was perfect too, I didn’t feel stuffed. I still love how they give me pocky at the end of the meal(this time it was«chocolate Matcha» flavoured!) Service is slow but the workers are incredibly friendly.

My wife and I decided to try this spot on our last day in Vancouver and were delighted with the cozy delicious experience! Sashimi was fresh and generously cut(big delicious tuna), served on wooden slabs. The special fish(es) of the day were presented creatively by the chef and made with top notch ingredients. From the monkfish liver to wasabi tako and pocky sticks with the bill, we enjoyed everything about our lunch!

Hey guys, guess what? I’ve found what I’m pretty sure is one of Vancouver’s most hidden, yet best sushi places. Buried deep in Kitsilano in a sleepy row of shops is Hitoe sushi — an unassuming, small little shop that has only a few tables, one sushi chef and a few servers. Prices here are surprisingly affordable, especially when you see what you get. I almost don’t want to write all of this because I want to keep it quiet. Oh well, worth it! What we ordered: Pretty much the whole menu. * I ordered a mixture of nigiri, both some of the fresh fish of the day and some on the menu. Also got an order of spicy salmon sashimi, which was HUGE and perfect. It really hit the spot. Also ordered an Aburi toro nigiri and a yam roll. * The boyfriend got the Japanese Sashimi special, which had all of the fresh fish of the day. * Our friends got a mixture of rolls, aburi and a huge chirashi bowl. Everything was really fresh, and gorgeous presentation. The tuna belly was insanely good. I could go back there just for that. Pro-tips: 1. They take reservations! 2. They give Pocky packs with your bill(AREYOUSERIOUS?! YES.) 3. The portion sizes are pretty big, especially considering the price 4. Budget in extra time — it takes awhile to get your food, but boy, it’s worth the wait.
