Being a frequent visitor I have nothing bad to say. I love their Taiwanese style noodle soup. Feels just as good as home made. Robot shaved noodles served in variety meats of choice. My favourite is pork ribs noodle soup. But sometimes I go for the beef one which is super hot and spicy! So if you have a cold and you need something to give you the zap… go for that!(If you can handle spice) portions are large! I can never finish it… lol! Deserves a try! Free Wi-Fi. I always get connected when I enter. So that’s a plus point.

Went there today and there was no heat. It was like holy shit these people are cheap. Then comes my soup noodle machine sliced and ribs. The soup tasted like Knors soup mix. Barely any ribs in the dish. Definitely not a repeat. Should have gone to mcds instead

Because Peaceful Restaurant was too crowded at dinner, I decided to eat here. It was empty with about two other tables occupied. The server offered me a nice hot cup of green tea and recommended me to try their diced chicken with hot peppers & peanuts because it was more saucy. I gladly obliged and asked for a small bowl of steamed rice to go with it. My food arrived in 15 minutes, which really impressed me. This dish, in particular, was very delicious and mildly spicy. The peanuts were coated perfectly with their Szechuan sauce and gave a perfect crunch with the chicken morsels. I couldn’t eat all because the quantity was very big. I parceled the remaining home. I will come back to eat here again and try something different on their menu. I would definitely recommend this place for those wanting to have some spicy Chinese cuisine.

When there are polarized Unilocal reviews, you know you’re in for at least an okay time, right? When the line up for Peaceful Restaurant is too long, there is Old Ginger. Do you want to wait a very long time for hand cut noodles, or a reasonable amount of time for reasonable robot cut noodles? For me it was the latter. As other reviewers have suggested, try the tan tan noodles. I also liked the Szechuan green beans a lot. I noticed the robot approved when Yanjing Beer was ordered. Sit near the robot, but not too close. The waitress joked that robots are the best workers, presumably because they don’t get stat holidays or weekends off. The robot was not amused. The robot has blades.

This is our go-to place for Sichuan food for my hubby and I whenever we’re in town or have a crazing.(FYI — It’s SICHUAN like See-Choo-an not Sash-shuan or whatever horrible bastardization). We have only ordered spicy items here(Cumin Lamb, Lamb Stew, Kung Pao Chicken, Gai Ding Chicken, etc.). And every time it has been delicious! The food is authentically Sichuan, actually tastes spicy, and has those numbing peppers that my hubby loves. A lot of other places claim Sichuan when they really mean whatever Westernized Chinese Food(think Lemon Chicken, Chicken Balls with the bright orange sauce… that is not Chinese Food). Fortunately, each time we have been here(and we have been here a total of like 5 times at least), the service has been good(for an Asian restaurant). The servers are usually attentive and friendly. I have yet to experience the terrible service the other Unilocalers have mentioned. I feel like Old Ginger is just as good as Peaceful(a few doors down), just waaaay less crowded. My suggestion: stick to the spicy items. Don’t come to a Sichuan restaurant and order your typical Chinese fare like chow mein or whatever.

We were on our way to Peaceful Restaurant next door but arrived to find it closed so we decided to try Old Ginger. We are vegetarian so we asked for a number of modifications to dishes which they happily did for us. For instance, they made us a potato pancake even though it was not on the menu. They added extra vegetable to a noodle dish for a small extra charge. Anything we asked they were happy to try to accommodate. Many Chinese restaurants are very rigid in their menu items and will not make changes very easily. We were pleasantly surprised with the food and the attitude. They genuinely wanted to please us. The restaurant does get busy and service can be a little slow but it is worth the wait. I would definitely go back again and would recommend it to other vegetarians.

I love this place! My coworkers and I dine here regularly. The service is wonderful– they are all super friendly. The food is super affordable and packed with flavor. Some of my favorite dishes from here include the won ton soup, steamed shanghai dumplings, bean and beef stir fry, and dry ribs. Delicious!

Nothing Good in this place!!! I would never go to this place again! The waitress was not friendly, and food taste wasn’t hot, we ordered spicy chicken, it comes with a big plate but only few pieces of chicken and 2⁄3 potatoes and noodles about $ 20, the potatoes tastes like left over., No fresh!!!

It is not easy for people if you are in a rush. #2. I HATE all the«Plastic Flower» deco along side of window, toilete… what no brain Ugliest way to down grade the overall deco. #3, Wrong English Spelling of «Promotion meal» #4, Quiet a lot salt in every dish… Thats way you will drink a lot the tea and go to see the #3 Ugliest flower art show in toilet.

Went in because we were looking for Chinese food and it looked clean and well kept. That’s where the good things end. Ordered the veg spring rolls for starters, crispy chicken in black bean sauce and boiled rice for mains. First arrived our crispy chicken in black bean sauce on a bed of bean sprouts. The black bean sauce, I’m pretty sure was just gravy, Abaolutley no taste, and it took another 10mins for the rice to arrive. Then once I had finished my mains, on came the spring rolls, but these weren’t just any spring rolls, these spring rolls were the dreamy combination of warm on the outside and frozen in the center. But being the non confrontational person I am, I chose not to complain and just pay. The waitress then had the cheek to call me out for not tipping, so I told her how the food was and left her there in a huff! NEVERAGAIN!

Food was tasty, but oh-so-oily! Wow. Just… so much oil. Had the veggie fried rice and the eggplant-and-potato dish, both were delish, so long as we didn’t think too much about what it was doing to our insides. Service was alright, above standard for a regular Chinese restaurant(ie: where normally you might only get attention if you wave them over, the server here came by and refilled our tea once without us asking). Friendly enough, overall. Didn’t get the robot noodles, so can’t comment on that, but it was pretty cool to see it hangin out in the kitchen like some kind of Astro Boy feature.

We only came here cause Peaceful Restaurant was close for the day. Everything that we ate tasted like MUSH. Deep fried fish, first bite was mushy. Deep fried buns, usually it’s deep fried fully as a loaf and then cut into slices. Old ginger deep fries every slice and like the fish, the texture was MUSH. Rice was way mushy as well. How do they make up for the poor quality food? They offer large portions for the price of 10 – 11 bucks a person. Never again.

Planned to go to Peaceful Restaurant, but it was closed for the day. Wanted to have noodles. Decided to give Old Ginger a try. Ordered beef noodles from their lunch special menu. Noodles and soup were acceptable. To my surprise, the beef was actually tasty and soft. For $ 7.50, they gave us a lot of beef. While thinking I’d visit this place again in the future, the service turned me off. The service was disorganized, but the waitresses were friendly enough. At the end, I couldn’t finish the big bowl of noodles, I asked for 2 take-out bowls in order to pack my noodles and soup separately(so that they don’t turn into a big soggy lump with no soup later). The waitress gave me a box and a bowl, no bag. When asked, she said that lunch special was already cheap and plastic bowls were expensive. Fine! I was willing to put the noodles in the box, but would still need a bag, so that the soup from the noodles wouldn’t get everywhere. I asked for a bag and the bill. She VERY reluctantly gave me another bowl(?) and a bag while muttering that she was just trying to save the boss some money, no bill. Then, she went back to clean other tables. Had to remind her again for the bill. If you don’t mind the service and is looking for cheap and acceptable food in a convenient location, this place is ok.

Had salted cucumbers, shrimp wonton soup, steamed pork dumplings, and Szechuan pork belly. Overall a 5⁄5 meal! Great value too. Only downside is that the service is not fantastic but that’s typical of Chinese restaurants so I won’t let that impact my rating :) Will be back!!!

I was expecting something much closer to mediocre, but was pleasantly surprised! The noodles that the robot cut for me were not too tough or chewy, and the thickness was just right(well, that’s programmable). I had the braised pork with knife shaved noodle, so it was a bit of a saucy mixed noodle(not soup). The noodles clumped together a little bit, but after I mixed the sauce in, it separated quite well. My friends had noodles in soup. I found the soup had a decent amount of flavour but it was a very superficial flavour and lacked depth. They have cheaply priced lunch specials but they’re generally a stir-fry dish on rice. I think it was $ 7.50… The best part… were their dumplings! We had an order of panfried dumplings on the side, and they were larger than most, but the skin particularly nice and thin, and fried to a perfect crisp. I’m dying to try their xiao long bao to see if the quality is as good as the panfried dumplings.

REDFLAG ! REDFLAG ! REDFLAG ! this is like an episode from Kitchen Nightmares. I don’t want to be rude, but this is the first time that I would leave a warning or «enter at your own risk» statement. I gave this restaurant a try to see what they have to offer like the many others that I have recently visited for the past few months which I have yet to leave a review. but this one is so special that it can’t wait and have to be in the top priority list. I’ll give some quick specifics. the place which I wouldn’t even dare nor state nor categorize as a restaurant have a decent size but inadvisable made to fit or cater more than it’s recommended number of seating and inadvisable table sizes. this made the spacing too narrow or not a place for young families with babies. the seats are made of synthetic leather while comfortable, it does create some farting noise due to the friction between your garment’s bottom and the leather while you try to adjust yourself. the seats and table fabric aren’t cleaned properly nor would I say atleast dusted to an extent that the dust particles wouldn’t be that noticeable to the human eye. menu looks pretty basic mostly and nothing that would separate it to some of the restaurants that offer such and pretty same presentation. now comes the harsh part. I ordered something that is somehow pretty unique and sadly such selection was filled with great regret and not ever going to this place ever again. I can’t even remember the name as it is not worth remembering due to it being horrendous. what I do recall is that it is part of their lunch special that is some sort of a beef soup with shaved noodles. the beef soup noodle comes in a big bowl with pretty much a poor presentation of topsy-turvy mix of vegetables and beef chunk. I don’t usually order a big bowl menu but I’m very capable of finishing such a meal without a hiccup. much so if it’s really good. now, WTF? are you guys trying to poison me? the beef soup taste like water with a funny taste as if it’s spoiled or left over for days. the beef tasted like it just came out of the freezer and just dropped immediately on a boiling pot then served. if you think that awful, the next one would take the cake. the damn noodles were soggy and resemble big lumps of cysts. I can’t even hold/grip or separate the damn noodles with a chopstick because they were fused like they were stored in a freezer a couple of nights ago and were just taken out and heated. they were heavy, slippery and soggy hard. you can’t do that and serve old frozen noodles to paying customers who are looking for a freshly cooked and prepared meal. you don’t call yourself a restaurant if you can’t even prepare a decent meal better than a canned good or insta-meals. I basically left the restaurant without even finishing my meal and can’t manage to do so as it left a bad taste on my palate that I have to wash and eat somewhere else and drank some chocolate drink just to remove that filthy taste in my mouth. glad I didn’t end up in the hospital or otherwise I would have consulted a heath inspector to look at the place. if I were to summarize this review, all I can say is one thing, BADFOOD. if I had I choice, I would give this a –10 rating.

It is located on Broadway and Cambie. It took over the old Tang Dynasty Noodles. It marketed itself as Si Chuan(Szechuan) restaurant, meaning SPICY food! Unlike the other two handmade noodle places on Broadway: Peaceful and Shao Lin Noodles, it uses Robot to cut noodles. The noodle-sliding robot has been a popular thing in China for the past year, replacing human noodle chefs. It is the first time I have seen it in Vancouver. It usually takes months even years to train a noodle chef, now the restaurant owners can cut cost by using a robot. Walked by there today, without knowing the robot chef, the«Si Chuan» sign got my attention. There are not so many authentic Si Chuan restaurant. So I always like to try new ones. When I saw the noodle-sliding robot, I gotta try their noodles. I ordered the Cumin Lamb Stir-Fried Noodles. It is one of my favorite noodle dishes. I have tried at all the noodle restaurants. The verdict? very good!!! I watched the robot cut the noodles, only took about 20 sec, so probably 1⁄3 faster than an experienced noodle chef. The noodles are chewy but yet soft, and they are a lot thinner than the noodles cut by a real chef. It is now my favorite place for this dish! The best part, it is very spicy! By the way, my ranking for Cumin Lamb noodles are: 1) Old Ginger — Best I had in Vancouver! quite spicy, may want to tell them less spicy if you are not use to. 2) Shao Lin — lots of garlic. the cutting noodles are handmade. 3) New Peace(DT) small portion compare to its competitors 4) Peaceful — not my first choice for noodle dishes, will only order from there if the other places are not open.

There’s nothing I don’t like in this place; Location — Uptown Vancouver right next to Skytrain station Decoration — Bright, clean, tidy & not tightly packed Set up — burgundy table & white utensils with comfy seats Food — homemade type dishes, minimal msg, Price — competitive & fair pricing, u r well fed under $ 10 Service — friendly & attentive All very good. Will definitely come again & try other stuff.
