Went here are late night dinner around 10pm. Fairly busy still and noticed the close at 2am. We ordered honey spare ribs and haw fun(which is my fave staple Chinese dish). This is the best haw fun I had! Not greasy. Lots of vegetables in it. Though this didn’t any meat that’s ok. Honey spare ribs were really good too. Portions were bigger than I expected. Did this place used to be an East Indian restaurant called Dhoom? Now it’s a Chinese restaurant called Shoom? Was it an over night change?

Doesn’t even deserve the 1 star. Made a reservation for a party of 3. Got to the restaurant, the host asked if we made reservations and I gave in my name. He looked it up, then without saying anything, walked away. Along came another staff and asked the same thing, but she actually asked us to wait a moment. She then went to check with the first guy and also did not come back. There were at least 2 to 3 empty tables, so we asked what’s going on. Their reply was we had to wait for this specific table to finish because the empty small tables were for 6 people. Fine, we gave them a few more minutes, but it was obvious the table was no where near finishing. We started heading for the door and the lady told us or table was almost ready, you just have to wait for them to finish. That did not even warrant a response from me as I continued for the door. Those empty tables remained empty. Such ridiculous service.

Food was actually pretty decent, service totally sucks. After we finished eating, we got desserts that they gave at the end, we saw a lot of people receiving cookies and sweet red bean soup, but when we finished our food only the red bean soup came so we questioned them about the cookies. The waitress told us that because the other customers, since they were non-asian, didn’t want the sweet red bean soup, so they got cookies instead(every table i saw with both cookies and red bean soup were all asian). I then asked, «why the table behind me had the cookies and the red bean soup?» — which were still on the table as they were cleaning it up which then waitress then asked now if we wanted the cookies(We didn’t take any after that ordeal). We ordered a total of 8 dishes for 6 people and ended up with the bill of $ 152. But guess what? THEYCHARGEDUSEXTRAON2OFTHEDISHES, when we questioned the waitress about it, the waitress acted as if she didn’t understand what was wrong, then grudgingly fixed the price for us after we showed her the bill to the menu prices, no apologies or anything. After we got the bill fixed THEYDIDN’T ACCEPTANYTHINGBUTCASH. There were no signs outside the restaurant stating that they only accept cash. Although there was one sign behind a pot of flowers on the cash register which my brother saw after he went up to pay the bill. We also asked for a few take out containers which they didn’t give us a plastic bag for until we asked for one. So in conclusion, if you don’t mind getting ripped off a few extra dollars(or a lot more than a few if you decide to eat seafood that charges by weight) with some attitude from the waiters/waitresses there, the food isn’t bad. Personally, I would never come back.

Saw some pretty good reviews for this place and came to try their late night snacks. They have a very small menu but the prices are very reasonable and come with a free plain congee if you order three or more dishes. We got the salty peppery pork chops which had plenty of meat and were indeed spicy if you ate anything green or red, the tofu stuffed with meat which was delicious and the melon, bamboo and pork nape stir fry which had NO filler ingredients and contained what was advertised. Overall, dishes are good because they do not try to cheap out on the main ingredients but they were a little bit oily. The congee was also very good but their late night menu is very small.

I never write review on a Chinese restaurant but I have to share my experiences on this restaurant. Plus I also just read another review with similar incidents. We came here for dinner on Sunday night(6 adults) we ordered meat, veggies(Normal dishes) No crab or fish except for one dish that have some duck egg yolk on shrimp.(The duck egg yolk shrimp dish is about $ 20, this is probably the most expensive dish we ordered) We had 5 dishes in total. The bill came out to $ 140. My mom went to Pay the bill and browse thru prices on each dishes just to make sure. The bill had stated one dish was $ 60. My mom was curious and ask the waitress which dish was for $ 60. Because we did not order any seafood dishes. The waitress didn’t say anything and took the bill back and scratch out the total from $ 140 to $ 90. The waitress still didn’t say anything so my mom ask what happened. The waitress said they had mistaken mix up the shrimp Chinese character and thought it was the Chinese character crab. The Chinese character for shrimp and crab are quite different. How can they get mix up? The fact that she did not even say a word that made my mom so suspicious. Obviously they overcharge us on purpose. Many people don’t look thru their bills when they pay. So I’m sure I’m not the only one. If you ever go to this restaurant make sure you check your bill. They are very dishonest. I assumed that people don’t check or ask usually. well we did. Food was ok but with that kind of service and dishonest experiences. We will never go back.

Great food, friendly service. Best honey garlic ribs anywhere in Vancouver. Busy place so you have to reserve early or go there as soon as they open or you will not get a seat and have to wait. So far everything we had there was good or great. This place does not disappoint but bring cash cause I don’t think they take credit cards.

I usually never write about Chinese places, but here I am. It was not my decision to come here, nor did i even know this place existed, but it was only 1 shop up the street from my fav northern noodle joint on Fraser. Lets get this flavour train on the road! First off, dont let the shabby exterior and the blurred out windows deceive you, inside is magnificently renovated. Nice cushioned chairs, big tables, not pretentious décor, and busy! You are limited to street parking, so get lookin~ and prep your change purse. Lets get to some food shall we?~ My family ordered some kind of Ginger pork feet which is kinda meh, it wasn’t too sour or gingery but it certainly wasn’t my cup of tea. not much meat, only cartilage, fat and skin. The main event had to be the wok fried curry crab, yes you heard me… CURRYCRAB! It smelled like curry, looked like curry, and boy did it taste like curry. Great flavour, great spices, but is only as good as the crab you chose/buy. Bigger is better here folks, but it does get pricy. While I was too busy tearing apart my crab legs, the half soy chicken arrived. I was given a piece and it was very nicely cooked, still moist but nice baked crispy soy flavoured skin. Mmmmhmmm good~ So, While im still chugging away at my 3rd crab leg, our soup arrived. It was a hot & sour soup. The soup’s consistancy was just right, and the amount of ingredents floating around was just right aswell. Some shrimp, shredded chicken, tofu, onions, chilis. all the good stuff you’d expect from a good hot & sour soup. At this point, I FINALLY finished the crab, soup, chicken, and w. e was on the table, wiped my hands on a wet nap and waited for the next thing. Promptly arriving was a stir fry seafood and Vegetable dish, served in its own wok! now thats hot! nice chunks of scallops, squid, shrimp, tofu, onions, cabbage, etc. It sure beats the hell out of those low end places with scallops, peas, and candied walnuts, that’s so last year right? For our vegetarian friends, we have a lovely fried egg tofu with bok choi and shrooms. Yummy right? I was quite good, nicely seasoned, al dante cook on the bok choi, and very good portion size. There was also a honey garlic porkchop, which i might add was not overly sweet, overly hard like candy, and quite pleasing to eat. Soft porkchop with a simple honey garlic glaze, mmm mmm good~ To top off the evening, we had some KILLERCLAMS! and some scallop egg rice. Boy those clams were killer alright, huge, packed lots of flavour, and there were alot of them! Not super spicy, just enough seasoning to make them irresistible like a bag of good olde Thunder Crunch. =(The rice was anti-climactic but it did have seasoning, which is better than most places. All and all, it was a very good night. Walking around the restaurant on my way to the washroom, I saw some huge ass steamed scallops w/toppings, and the table across from us had golden sand crab with rice cakes. I mean, If you’re Chinese and dont think those sound good, your insane!!! The only blemish to this review is the fact that their POS system was down, so only cash was accepted… BOOOOOOOO! And some shabby service at times due to the full house, but the food was delievered at a breakneck speed, fresh from the wok. Conflicted? Yes. But, Im looking forward to coming back on my own terms and having all that good stuff I couldnt get to eat. An Unexpected Four, out of Five.

Went to Shoom again last Sunday for a family dinner. There were 6 of us this time. We ordered many dishes, all good, especially the curry beef. It came with Naan(East Indian style bread). The crispy chicken also deserved special mention. The taste was rich and deep, with the skin perfectly crisp. The service was as before, spotty. For the 6 of us, no purchased alcohol(we brought our own bottle and they did not charge a cork-fee), with tip came to $ 200. Reservation is a must.

Food — 3.5 Service — 2 The quality of our dishes was above average, but the service was rather poor. There were customers waiting for tables. The server told us that they had no clean bowls and didn’t give us any dessert soup. We got a plate of cookies instead, and we’re shown the door quickly. In a competitive market such as Vancouver, the restaurant should focus more on customer service.

I had picked up one of the take out menus and a few days later my friend and I decided to order food for delivery. According to the menu, free delivery for orders over $ 40, however the woman on the phone said there was no delivery. I ordered the food for pick up thinking I would take advantage of the 5% discount. When I arrived to pick up the food there was no discount indicated on the bill. She told me no tax had been charged instead. I did not get a copy of the bill but did notice the prawn and cashew dish was $ 21.95. After I got home I checked the menu and this dish was actually listed at $ 16.95. As I said, no receipt was given to me so it was pretty hard to go back and prove the charge. However, this has put a bad taste in my mouth so it may be quite awhile before I give them my business again. I may just drop by again to look at their actual menu in order to compare prices. I must say that the food was very good though, especially the honey garlic ribs.

Great food and wine. Sharon has done a great job with the finer details. Great for groups(Chinese Restaurant which doesn’t look like it from the outside). They also have take out… hidden gem for all the Chinese restaurants in Van.

Food was actually really good. Just the woman at the bar took forever to take my money. It was take out and the lack of customer service is what made me actually Unilocal about it. There’s no one in the entire restaurant and you are having a long conversation with a co worker while I have my cash In my hand for over 5 minutes. Basically had to say uhmmm hello!!!

This place is definitely NOT worth all the hype. With high expectations my family and I came to try this place out despite it was a long drive for us. The food was mediocre, the service was TERRIBLE with waitresses rolling their eyes and THROWING the menu on the table for us when we asked to keep one to look at. Even so, I was trying to understand that they might’ve had a busy night and tried to think in their shoes. BUT not until the bill came. The PRICES on our bill was NOT the same price that was stated in the menu. When we asked them that they’ve made a mistake, they said«oh the menu is just not updated». AREYOUKIDDINGME?! How is that even acceptable?! I will NOT come back and will NOT recommend anyone to come to this place unless you are wanting to get ripped off and get bad & rude service.

Excellent authentic flavors and huge portions at decent prices. Many different dishes to choose from and we got free excellent flavored soup and free desert red bean soup as well. We had tons of food left over and should have ordered only two dishes instead of three for three people. Best you get reservations, we were lucky to be squeezed in, they only open at night till late, 2 am! Nice décor and 5% discount on take out too. We ate on a mah jong table which was funny. Will be back!

Not sure what all the hype is about this restaurant. Went on a Wednesday night and sure, it was packed(people were even waiting for tables). But at above average prices for dishes(most dishes were mid-high teens in terms of pricing), I found the portions small(½ of a chicken was more like a quarter sized chicken), greasy, and the quality wasn’t that great(ordered the Gai Lan and beef, and the Gai Lan was very soft and mushy). I was a little miffed at the end of it all though. Tried to treat my parents to dinner and when trying to pay with credit, they flat out refused to take it, instead asking for cash even though it’s not posted anywhere that they don’t accept card(credit or debit). There’s a lot of really good Chinese restaurants in Vancouver, and based on my overall experience here, I don’t consider this as one of them.

One of my friends was talking about Shoon Restaurant. He said it was a pretty good Chinese restaurant so on Friday night 5 of us went over to give it a try! I, of course, arrived on time(630) and I went to in to get a table. We didn’t have reservations but I was seated right a way. As I waited for my late friends to arrive this waiter came by and said something to me in Chinese. Ok I’m Chinese but I don’t speak or understand Chinese worth a lick. Anyways I got 5% of what the guy was saying. Just to place him in a more uncomfortable spot I demanded that he say it to me in English! Me no speaky Chinese I said! Anyways the waiter said he wanted my table back! My party had not arrived and they wanted the table for another customer. Kind of insulting considering the other customer was alone and his party was not at the restaurant either! Kind of pissed me off! If the waiter were an English speaking waiter I would have given him an earful! Anyways my tarty friends arrived and we were seated. The food was unfortunately pretty good! Unfortunate cuz I really wanted to write a bad review for this place! Enough said… I won’t talk about the meal. I’m glad I was able to hold it together and my friends and I had a good time. My early evening slight still stung while I ate… swallowing crow as it were! Haha… Ok guys the food at Shoon Restaurant is pretty good! But I won’t be coming back. As my Chinese friend would say … I’m seu hay!!!

We may have over thousands of Chinese restaurants in Greater Vancouver! I have been most of upscale and causal Chinese restaurants in town. From my personal experience, most of Chinese restaurants at East side are below my standard. I would understand what you pay and what you get theory, therefore, I prefer to go for good quality food of restaurant rather than cheap food place. I passed by Fraser Street months ago and found Shoom was opened. It’s not easy to find parking on 50th and Fraser Street. I took my mom to there for dinner and found the restaurant pretty clean and bright. The menu was well-printed and selection of food was great! The service was good but a bit slow side. We saw the dishes out from the kitchen were huge even some in giant portion while we’re waiting for our food. We ordered 2 dishes and fried rice for dinner. Special Steam Chicken in Lotus Leaf — It’s so Canton Traditional style steam chicken. It steamed with wolfberries, red dates, black fungus, Chinese sausage and chicken. Great steam dish which light but delicious. Water Spinach — it’s cooked perfectly! Great skill presented on this dish coz not greasy and soaky sauce on water spinach. Dry scallops and egg white fried rice — It’s good but not outstanding. Overall, the dishes were decent for such price! Light tasted coz not much MSG. I’m so glad to see Shoom on Fraser and hope they do well in the future.

Came here again last week after some family MJ winnings lol. Didn’t realize that congee is a complimentary item… as long as you order enough lol. But for $ 38 you sure get tons of food(what you see in the most recent pic), plus a bonus customary soup with taro root. This time ordered some different items, the clams were good, not great, just not a fan of it in general, for some reason, I prefer mussels… Deep fried tofu great with the congee. Pan-fried fish also deleesh.
