I have to disagree with the statement made by the two previous reviewers that this studio is appropriate mostly for beginners. I have been practicing for 5 ½ years in studios in Montréal and Sydney, and I was immediately struck by the depth of knowledge and competence of the teacher that I tried at this studio, Sue. She is an excellent yoga teacher who is authentic, down-to-earth, humble, and gifted at what she does. I have visited many studios that I have found either too wishy-washy or too focused on a bodily workout in the absence of depth on the spiritual and emotional planes. Sue’s yin classes have a very loyal crowd of people devoted to them — if you are willing to go deep into the emotional body, face what you usually avoid in terms of discomfort, and engage in a meditative practice, then I highly recommend taking her yin classes. The benefits I’ve experienced from them are profound. The studio itself is warm, welcoming, and non-pretentious. I felt immediately at home here.

Unity Yoga is wonderful! Why? It’s friendly, inviting, noncompetitive and has some of the most amazing yoga teachers in Vancouver! Even if you don’t live in the Commercial drive neighbourhood it’s worth the commute and if you do, this should be your local go-to place for yoga. It’s perfect for those of us that enjoy an intimate and community orientated place. Very East Van!

You can’t live in Vancouver without trying Yoga at least once, right? Welp, I did it. Actually, I got pregnant, was told to try out prenatal yoga, and THEN I did it. Unity Yoga has a cute little tea room, and a pretty friendly community. Prenatal yoga was great, although the course could have focused more on strengthening for my tastes. But I think I’d like to reinforce Dani B’s comment. This is a good place for people like me who are yoga newbies and who still thinks the phrase ‘downward facing dog’ is funny — who want to get introduced to the whole yoga concept without the fear of being stuck in a pretzel shape for the following week.

If you you are looking for a relaxing yoga session, then this is the place for you. Most of the classes are Hatha and their Ashtanga classes are quite mellow as well. I was attracted to this place initially because it is also a tea house and I love tea. The atmosphere is nice and calming and the teachers are pretty good too. The thing I like most is that it’s not pretentious, everyone is just here to do yoga and have a good time. However, if you are looking for a challenging class that will make you sweat, then this is not the place for you. Personally, I want to sweat and I like power yoga and intense Ashtanga classes, so I kinda got bored after a couple classes here. It’s a great place if you are a beginner though. So, good for beginners and people that just want to relax for an hour and half(with a couple challenging moves), but this is not the place for you if you want to sweat and get an actual work out.
