The Playhouse is a small intimate venue IMHO. It is definitely not a large as the QE Theatre, and most of the seats in the Playhouse are good seats, meaning there is a good sightline to the stage. I’ve never sat up closer than row 10 since I hate«looking up». I’ve seen quite a few productions here from Dangerous Liasons, Hello Dolly, Moliere’s Tartuffe, Le Misanthorpe, and L’École des femmes(I like Moliere), and most recently La Cage Aux Folles yesterday. All productions were entertaining and well done. I tend to prefer this venue over the QE Theatre because of it’s intimacy. However, to get the full effect of a Puccini, or Verdi opera, the theatre is needed. There’s lots more space for a full sized pit orchestra at the theatre. As another Unilocaler has mentioned, the washrooms are dated.

I agree with everything you have to say about the Playhouse! I used to work here and unfortunately the spirits are expensive. Not to be rude, the reason they don’t have debit/credit machines is that there is only a 20min intermission and could you imagine trying to serve all the people in that time frame.

If you know the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, you know the Playhouse, they live side by side. But unless you’ve been to the theatre here, you might not know what awaits inside. The theatre itself is mid-size, not large like the Orpheum, but not small like the Waterfront on Granville Island. I’ve been to a few shows here, have sat in the orchestra and balcony and I think that every seat is a good seat. Although at Row 10ish in the orchestra, facial expressions register much easier. The washrooms are located down flights of stairs and are in serious need of a makeover. Remember those old fashioned taps where the left tap spews oodles of hot water while the right shoots out the cold — and nowhere do they meet in the middle? Yup, good luck washing your hands in comfort here. And, of course, like the norm around town, a barely decent glass of wine will set you back $ 8, but if you’re lucky the bartender will fill your glass up all the way to the top. It’s cash only of course… why the City of Vancouver won’t allow credit/debit is beyond me. Bravo to the Playhouse Theatre Company too, who puts on quite a number of plays here.
