Wanted to check it out a few days ago and unfortunately it’s not there anymore. No sign for the restaurant, no notice at the door, and it looks like there are some boxes and junk inside the place. If they are just taking a vacation or have moved to another location, someone please notify us!

Probably the best Chcken Biryani I’ve ever had. Perfectly spiced and not overwhelming. Indeed, it was one of those dishes that actually tastes healthy. Not greasy the way too many Indian restaurants serve it, smothered in ghee. And the rice it is served on is perfectly flavoured as well. Best thing: the price. A quality dish for about $ 11.00, including tax and tip. Tea is served free. So I make a meal out of it; in fact, they serve a small coleslaw-like salad with it for veggie tokenism(although I don’t partake because the dressing is too hotly spiced). One star off because of the very limited menu offerings. Indeed, the menu itself is quite limited and on top of that they have even crossed off about 1⁄3 of the choices!

My friend and I first discovered this place while we were walking along Joyce, near the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. We thought — we’ve never seen this place before, so why not explore it? Great idea, because since then, I’ve been back again and again and again. This truly is a gem of a restaurant in the Collingwood neighborhood, and I’m so glad that it’s only a 10-minute walk from where I live! Wahh Tee is a clean and tiny restaurant that’s just a few minutes north of Joyce Station. I’d guess that it would snugly fit 16 people? I’ve been here on weekdays and weeknights already, and every time I’ve been here, the restaurant is half empty. This is sad, since the food here is truly delicious! If more people *knew* how amazing this place is, it would be packed every night. As I recall, I’ve had the fermented tea leaf salad, pennywort salad, beef curry, seafood curry(curries come with a choice of two rice — coconut or biryani), coconut milk soup(with seafood, not chicken), noodle salad, fish noodle soup, vegetarian fried noodles, beef fried noodles, and vegetarian fried rice. Some dishes come with a small, spicy side salad, while other dishes(the rice ones, I believe) come with a side of shrimp sauce. (Note: The shrimp sauce is absolutely amazing, and I would put it in everything if I could. Too bad they only provide a small quantity of sauce, though fortunately — I believe they sell these sauces in containers in the restaurant.) The dishes were all so flavorful, but my favorite ones had to be the beef fried rice and the tea leaf salad. The tea leaf salad is crunchy and slightly bitter, while the beef fried rice is just heavenly! The Burmese definitely know how to combine the spices and herbs to create memorable dishes. The price of dishes here are fairly reasonable, with most dishes ranging from $ 5 to $ 11. The portions are decent-sized too. I can probably finish one dish myself, but with more people, I’d recommend trying as many dishes as possible — perhaps one from each category. The dishes tend to come out relatively fast, probably because of the low amount of customers. The first dish came in less than 10 minutes, for instance. Since the restaurant is small, it usually only has one waiter or waitress at all times, and when the staff show up late, it’s usually the chef who also waits on tables. There was one staff/chef only, during two of the three times I was there. All the staff there are super nice. I’ve had delightful interactions with the staff there each time I went. One of the waitresses even taught me how to say«goodbye» in Burmese! All in all, I would highly recommend Wahh Tee. The food is flavorful and prices are reasonable. You’ll leave the restaurant having a greater appreciation for Burmese cuisine, and will probably want to tell friends about it too. What are you waiting for? Try out this restaurant!

After hearing some great things about this restaurant, I had to come and try Burmese food. This is my first encounter with this cuisine, and I can conclude that it’s one of my favorites. We came on a Sunday night. It wasn’t busy at all, and we got a table right by the window. The place is small, but clean and tidy. It has this cozy atmosphere which makes you feel like you’re eating at home. I really like the large list of salads they have on their menu. We started off with the fermented tea leaf salad and the pennywort salad. As much as I like the crunchiness and flavour of the tea leaf salad, I really liked the pennywort salad. It had the a good balance of the fish sauce and lemon juice, and there were also pieces of shallots and garlic within the salad. The biriyani with curry chicken was also a hit. Tender pieces of chicken on top of a heap of biriyani rice. The curry wasn’t overly spicy; it was the perfect amount of flavour. We also got a side of coconut rice. This wasn’t just any coconut rice. The fragrant smell of the rice carried through to the taste. It’s pretty awesome. For dessert, the owner lady brought us some sooji and a sticky rice. We were told that the coconut flavour from the desserts were derived naturally, not from a can. Hence, it really showed. I especially enjoyed the sweet sticky rice. Prices are really reasonable and the service is great. There is even a Unilocal check in offer, so this is the place to try. Now.

* Wonderful new Burmese hole in the wall * Stumbled onto this little new restaurant, and what a pleasant surprise it was! I was so excited to find it, that I entirely forgot to take pictures — apologies! Started off with the laphet thoke(fermented tea leaf salad). It was a good sized portion, presented on a flat plate with the chili and raw garlic on the side so you could add to taste. There were 3 – 4 types of fried beans which added the classic crunchy texture, combined with the marinated tomatoes and of course the star of the dish, the fermented tea leaves. What a wonderful start to the meal, and reasonably priced at $ 5. They have a wide selection of Burmese salads, all priced for the same $ 5. I’m looking forward to trying them all! They offer three different noodle soups, which are all available in small($ 3.50), medium($ 5.50), and large($ 7.50). We ordered two mediums, and the serving was more than enough for us. The mohinga had a classic fish broth, which was nicely balanced. The rice noodles were perfectly cooked. The sliced hard-boiled egg soaked up the broth nicely. The banana tree root, lemongrass, and cilantro all combined and rounded out the complex and well balanced flavour profile. Delicious. The ohn no kyawswe(coconut milk noodle soup) had wheat flour noodles that had the perfect chew, and although I don’t think they make them in-house tasted almost handmade. The chicken was boneless dark meat which was moist and flavourful. The broth had deep complexity with nicely balanced seasoning and herbs. It was topped with fried rice noodles for texture, as well as a sliced hard boiled egg. Delicious. The friendly woman who runs the place gave us some complimentary desserts including sooji(semolina flavoured with coconut) and shwe htamin(sweetened sticky rice flavoured with coconut). Both were very good, with a slight preference for the sooji. Neither was overly sweet, and the flavours nicely finished off a wonderful meal. Total damage for the entire meal for two people was a very reasonable $ 16. We will definitely be back, and can’t wait to try all of the salads, the curries, the fried noodles, and the biryani. This spot is a keeper, and is definitely my favourite Burmese in Vancouver based upon my initial visit.
