if you’re looking for some quick sushi in the plaza, good luck because the only sushi place is complete garbage if i pay the standard price for sushi, i expect the same standard quality of sushi in return. mr. sushi has will give you a fresh(jk more like frozen) serving of lukewarm sushi rolls along with sweet af udon soup. service and atmosphere here is decent, but i don’t care when the main thing you advertise your restaurant for is complete garbage. i think this is the lowest tier of food you can get in the plaza

I used to go pretty often for our roommate dinners dates, foods really good and portions are pretty big. The place is very clean too. I personally like it the most out of all the Korean restaurants in the plaza.

I’m not sure why everyone is hating on Mr sushi, I’ve only ever gotten their lunch specials but their sushi is amazing, fresh and flavourful. much better than all you can eat. service is always hard working and friendly

[17/20] A lot of the reviews for this place are definitely outdated and mid represents the restaurant. Personally I come here probably 3 times a week for lunch or after classes so I have a good gauge of how it really is. Food(9⁄10) The food here is great and at a good value, but only if you know how to order. Here’s my guide Always check the daily specials as they offer the best value(~10) with the restaurant’s specialty dishes. There’s always an udon special, which is really filling and the broth is delicious! It comes with a roll of the day which is really good, granted not that authentic. Ramen is new, and its made with authentic Japanese style broth, with some great toppings and real noodles(not instant). It also includes a roll of the day. The restaurant owners are Korean and they have a great selection of Korean foods, which are all authentic and delicious. General rule of thumb, come here for the specials, Korean dishes, and bentos. Ironically Mr. Sushi’s specialty is not sushi but all their combos and entrees. Atmosphere(5⁄5) No complaints here, it’s always kept clean and the interior décor is very nice. It’s usually pretty quiet and there are a lot of booths which are very comfortable :) Service(3⁄5) Ok here’s where I can see why some people complain. The service heavily depends on who’s working because there’s usually only one server. There are around 3 male servers and 3 female waitresses that cycle. The guys tend to be pretty good but one of the girls is really slow and ditzy.

The food is alright. Nothing super special but if you don’t want AYCE then this place is decent. I like that they have daily deals.

Probably worst sushi restaurant besides Itamae around town. Essentially Itamae but not all you can eat. Please spare your own souls. Also had a extremely low rating from a food inspection report in 2015.

If you’re looking for outstanding sushi in waterloo, this is not the place. I would definitely say their korean food is better than their japanese. However, on that note, Mr. Sushi has some really affordable daily specials that will fill you up. This place has daily specials monday — saturday, available any time of the day(as long as they’re open). Be advised that they are closed on Sunday. They have 2 specials every day. One is avaliable daily: Vegetable udon with a roll(different depending on the day) and a rice set. Udon special is 9.99 for both udon and the 8 pc roll. Rice set is maybe 1 – 2 dollars more. Today(thursday) we got a udon combo which came with a tiger roll and soon tofu(a korean dish). The udon is a little small… And the tiger roll(tempura roll wrapped with salmon) was filling except the salmon was not very fresh. The soon tofu was very good. Broth was fairly spicy. It came with 3 side dishes(kelp, jap chae and potatoes) and a bowl of rice. This was cheaper than the daily special. All this for only 9.25! Through the multiple times I’ve been here, I have to say service is a little slow. They usually only have 1 server that often disappears to the back. This place can get busy during lunch rush and the server usually has her hands full. We often have to ask for stuff like menus, tea and soy sauce. Overall a decent place to come for affordable sushi. Just beware the slow service and not amazing sushi/sashimi.

The food is fine. I go here to satisfy my sushi cravings(so much better than SLC sushi, haha) when I’m near the University, and I usually go for a bento for the variety. I haven’t had any negative encounters with the food, but I do have a problem with the service. I went on a Saturday evening with my friends, and the place was packed. The staff, however, was embarrassingly understaffed. There was ONE waitress working a weekend evening shift, taking care of all the tables. It took us ~5 minutes to be seated, ~15 minutes to get a menu, and ~30 minutes for the waitress to take our orders(and she had to be called over since she literally forgot that we were there). People who came after us were seated quickly, given chopsticks and tea, and had orders taken first. It was unacceptable, and I was honestly going to go elsewhere had I not called her over. I don’t have an issue with the staff, just the fact that all the responsibilities were pushed onto one person — poor girl. TLDR: Food is good, but don’t go on a weekend evening since you’ll wait a century to be served.

We were seated with no menus. We waited a couple minutes hoping the server would enlighten this moment with our menus and some tea to quench our thirst but no. I had to get up and grab the menus myself. Not that it was bad service there was only one server holding down the floor. I ordered the Premium Bento Box but they didn’t have Chicken teriyaki to go with it. I teared. So I ordered the Chirashi. There was also a piece of hair in my cup but that was slowly resolved with a new cup. Food was great, the lack of service was understandable, but no chicken teriyaki portions and hair in my cup was an issue

The sushi was somewhat warm and the fish wasn’t too fresh. The service wasn’t too great; really slow and we didn’t get any kind of plates without having to ask for them. Not the best sushi but this place is conveniently placed in the university plaza.

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Avoid at all costs. Waterloo has some decent sushi restaurants and this is NOT one of them. The sushi and sashimi I had for lunch yesterday was off — thickly cut, low grade fish selection past its serve by date and covered in mayonnaise sauce to mask the terrible flavour. We were unable to finish the meal and weren’t offered a discount of any kind or even an apology. The service was equally bad — no plates or water without having to ask for them. I won’t be back. Ever.

I’ve never tried the Korean food here, so I can’t say about that. Regarding to the sushi itself, it’s pretty good. The price is a bit high, but it’s worth it. The sushi is fresh. I was expecting the fish to be stale since the store has received bad reviews. I had the sashimi bento, it was really great. I have a big appetite and I almost couldn’t finish.

Dear Mr. Sushi, I have been to this restaurant numerous times and I have enjoyed your bento boxes, sushi, salad, and soups. I was hoping to come here twice last week on different lunch dates, but as you were closed, I was unable to. I understand that business is slow when the school year is done and spring term exams are over, however in light of recent events, it has been made clear to me that you do not care about your loyal customers. I wanted to take some friends to Mr. Sushi on August 27, 2014. To make sure that you were open, I walked past your restaurant that day and saw indeed that the hand-drawn sign in your window said that you would be open August 27. I tried calling your restaurant to confirm later in the day, however I could not find a working phone number online and I was unable to reach the restaurant. At lunch, my friends and I walked over to Mr. Sushi only to discover that the hand-drawn sign had been changed from August 27 to August 28. We had to go to a restaurant we weren’t keen on we did not have much time to eat. It’s a shame that you do not care enough to properly inform customers about your hours of business. In a town where there are many competitive sushi restaurants who have websites and working phone numbers and are open during regular working hours(and frankly, better sushi…), you should be working a lot harder to keep your customers. You lost three yesterday. Yours truly, Amanda

I do not recommend Korean dishes at this place. Some people say they are okay but the quality and taste are not consistent. I suggest you should try one of udons they have or pork cutlet.

Mr. Sushi is not Mr. Sushi. At least, I would ask him to change his name because it’s misleading. It makes me think that the mister is known for his great sushi, but that really isn’t the case at all. I’m not really sure what Mr. Sushi is known for. I went to Mr. Sushi with a friend of mine, and found the prices extremely overpriced for the sushi. My friend got rainbow roll(plain fish) and I got the black dragon roll(the unagi was a bit too cold). My friend also got some japchae, and it was really plain too. Literally just glass noodles cooked in soy sauce and sesame oil. I was actually hoping to get some hamachi(yellowtail) instead, but they told me they didn’t have it. How could they not have hamachi? :( I was disappointed and had to spend another ten minutes looking at the rest of their small selections of sushi. There were probably more non-sushi items than sushi items in their menu(am I still at Mr. Sushi?) I wouldn’t go back.

I grew up with sushi in Vancouver, so ordering sushi in the inland that is Waterloo takes real guts and trust. Most sushi places in Waterloo has been more or less disappointing as I have tried most of them over the years. You might be thinking that I am going to on a praising-streak on the wonderful sushi from Mr.Sushi. But no. I have learned my lesson, and I only order food that is of the same ethnicity as the restaurant owner. For instance, if you see Korean food in the menu at a sushi restaurant, just stick with the Korean food. The reason being: 1. it is hard for them to mess up on dishes they grew up with 2. it would almost be shameful to mess them up It is as if a Japanese Sushi chef hand craft the quality of sushi you find at any of the Waterloo sushi places(Watami is another story). If he cannot make sushi that he himself would appreciate, he wouldn’t. Further, sushi involves the art of not only making the sushi, but preparation of each and every ingredient involved. Fresh fish on rice is just fresh fish on rice. Sorry, I digress. I have ordered the Korean dishes from this place as well as a few hard to mess-up dishes such as Tonkatsu Don; and they are all decently enjoyable. So the food or just those I have ordered deserve a good 4⁄5. That kind of score is determined by the locality. That is if they were to compare to those at Finch/Yonge Toronto, it is a totally different story. The service and atmosphere is decent. The waiters seems very unenthusiastic which may probably be reflected by their wage or management but it ain’t a big factor to me. I do like the bright atmosphere; it is a good and relatively quiet place to meet and chat with a friend. All in all, give this place a go. If you keep my advice on ordering, you can very well have a good meal there.

Let me prefect this by stating I just finished eating here and spent the last 10 minutes vomiting. I’ve never rated a restaurant before on Unilocal but enrolled especially to warn others of this restaurant. The low down: 1) My wife and I decided to try this location for a birthday supper; 2) Décor is nice, menu is expensive; 3) Two pieces of sushi had BONES still in it; 4) Salmon sashimi was dry to the touch indicating it wasn’t covered in the fridge; 5) Tempura shrimp was obviously old. Old crusty on the outside, slimy on the inside. Was hidden inside a roll to disguise; 6) Paid $ 45 for two bento boxes and one roll. Ate and left to campus. By the time I made it to the SLC I was involuntarily heaving. Ended up puking in the washroom. DONOTEATHERE!@! Be warned!

Writing a review for this restaurant involves a lot of intense, analytical thinking! Sure the food is good — I’ve enjoyed their sushi rolls and their surprisingly filling beef soup + fish + rice meal during lunch hours — but there are little things that cumulatively diminish the overall dining experience. If I could rate Mr. Sushi based on their cuisine, I’d give it a 4-star rating. Yet food alone is never the determining factor when it comes to these reviews; the dining experience also involves the mental impressions the establishment can provide for the customer. For example, good décor helps to augment client satisfaction when staying for a meal. Luckily, Mr. Sushi delivers on the latter. However, unnerving wait times render aesthetics irrelevant when you’re feeling hungry. There’s a fine balance to these things. Mental impressions. When the food is finally served despite the relatively long waiting time and tastes better than expected, one is not inclined to remain unnerved or irritated for too long. A restaurant that delivers a great product is greatly appreciated by any customer. However, upon cleaning your delectable plate of sushi and you re-evaluate your mental impressions, there are very few things that can break such an elevated state of mind. For instance, noticing that the sushi chef wears a glove for sanitary purposes only helps you fall in love with the establishment even more… Yet, when you notice that the same sushi chef hand rolls the sushi you just ate, then goes to the bathroom while wearing the glove, touches the door handles with the glove, touches the supplies on the storage shelf with the glove, then goes back to preparing food with the same welcoming smile he had when he first welcomed you into the store while wearing the same glove, it shatters the mental impression of the place, the sushi, the waiting time, the aesthetics, and makes your belly queasy. Mental impressions. There’s a fine balance Mr. Sushi, there’s a fine balance.

I was a regular customer here before the fire closed this place down for two years, and I for one and happy Mr. Sushi is back. I love the take-away sushi here. For lunch, they have the sushi pre-made on the cooler area in the front of the store. Generally the items on the left(like the California Roll $ 3.99) are cheaper, and they more expensive towards the right(for example the Tempura Shrimp $ 7.99). Grab a couple of the trays and some of the complimentary Miso Soup to go and you can have tasty sushi without the wait(you will, of course, have to pay first). Now, there is a sit down part of the restaurant, and this is a la carte and made fresh to order. Now, I have tried to have a sit down meal here, but the times I have tried it has just been too busy. I think this is the source of some of the complaints about the place, but it is early days yet and I hope great hope that Mr. Sushi will be able to be a great eat-in place as well!
