The Squarerigger Neighbourhood Pub

This place is uncool enough to be hip, except without the hipsters. With Granville becoming a scary place to drink and hipsters seemingly taking over everywhere else, places like The Squarerigger are a comfortable throw back to when the word PUB meant something. The staff aren’t robots and actually joke around with customers. When it’s busy, you’ll see really mixed crowds– millionaires chatting with construction guys, 50 year old women chatting with 20 year old girls. It’s a strong regular crowd but they are friendly enough (if not a little bit nutty). I don’t know what their schedule is like but I’ve heard live music and excellent DJs as well. Clean bathrooms, a well-​maintained pool table, and a somewhat separate downstairs area is used for birthday parties, or just a place for a intimate chat on quieter nights.

I seriously almost gave this place two stars to make sure to keep people from coming to this bar. But that would just be rude!
I got a live ant in my drink, a wink and a mock gun hand from a local drunk, and a very dim local feel. This place is definitely high on my list of interesting places to visit in (West) Vancouver.

This pub was my local when I lived in Ambleside. Many great memories of this place, and many forgotten as well! Friendly staff, quirky regulars. It’s funny how many of the high rollers in West Van like to come down here and just let loose. No pretentiousness or attitude.
