We can only add to the chorus. This restaurant has excellent food. The owner prepares your dinner as you wait so be patient. It’s well worth the wait! This is one of the best restaurants we’ve been to and was worth the 45 minutes it took us to get to Windsor from metropolitan Detriot. We will definitely go back with our friends. It is best to make reservations in advance.

What a gem in downtown Windsor! Matryoshka is in an intimate retail space with views directly into the kitchen so we could see the owner/cook/server prepare everything fresh right after we ordered. We had the caviar appetizer and borsch for starters, then the beef stroganoff and Russian style lamb for entrees. Very flavorful fresh and uniquely Russian tasting. It’s a place full of personality and a great experience!

Had a delicious Sunday dinner at Matryoshka. The restaurant is on a quiet street in downtown Windsor. Décor and ambiance are simple. However the food is really why you enjoy yourself here and why you’ll likely come back. My party had a plate of perogies, another plate of dumplings, beef stroganoff and stuffed cabbage rolls. All of the dishes were incredibly delicious. Dinner was capped by wonderful dessert offerings. Service was friendly and we all left very satisfied. I’ll definitely come back for the food.

What a wonderful treat! I had no idea there was a restaurant serving up some old family favourites so close to us. While looking at the restaurants on Windsors ‘eat your city’ event a stumbled upon this little gem. After a delightful lunch today, I cannot wait to go back!!! My husband and I decided to take on the weekend lunch special ‘all you can eat perogies’ — $ 12.99 and you get a side. Challenge accepted!(There is a fee for any perogies left behind… So don’t be wasteful). ;) I ordered a salad– so fresh! My husband had the potatoes on the side(he would only share a little). The food didn’t take long to come out, although they apologized for the wait as everything is made fresh to order. A few rounds of perogies, a bowl of borscht… We were stuffed! The price was right, the service was friendly, the atmosphere is perfect… We can’t wait to go back! This small business is one to stay I hope, they take great care in what they serve, and have pride in the wonderful dishes that come out of their kitchen. Check them out on Facebook for all the specials. Enjoy!

Small place that’s tucked away on Pelissier and Maiden Lane but don’t let that deter you from stopping in and trying the delicious food! Everything is made fresh to order while you wait and never frozen which is admirable in my books! The perogies were delicious and the warm beet salad is a great way to start the meal.

I was uncertain if i would like Russian food, but a with my favourite lady on my arm we headed out to give it a try at Matryoshka. Located on the corner of Pelissier and Maiden Lane, this area is often filled with artists and music and during the festival season, but was quiet tonight overall. At first glance we were unsure if the restaurant was open, but inside was the proprietor ready for business. We found a classy atmosphere with nesting dolls and candles on each table. Outside the window the snow began falling gently setting an appropriate mood for this little culinary adventure. In the mood for tea, we asked our hostess(the owner Natalia) what she had available. She suggested a black tea with apricot blossom that we very much enjoyed. Unable to choose one, we decided to try a cup of the Russian chicken soup and a cup of borscht to start. The borscht was lovely with chunks of potato and cabbage and a side of sour cream. The chicken soup was unusual with tarragon, herbs and walnuts. Both were obviously made from scratch and absolutely delicious, but we both agreed that the chicken soup was our favourite. For the main, my partner chose the beef stroganoff, served with a rich sauce and a side of creamy mashed potatoes. I selected the chicken kiev. I sliced in to the piping hot breaded chicken cutlet and out oosed a tasty sauce of garlic and herbs that blended with the simple pasta. What’s is not to love? Desert was also a tough decision; so we choose both; Ptichye Moloko, I think it is called. a light layer cake with a very light cream, a layer of homemade chocolate and a touch of rum. The other was a similar, with cognac and walnuts instead of chocolate. Both were lightly sweet, and we could not agree which was better. One can’t go wrong either way. All in all, this was a great taste experience. We will be back to try the blini as soon as we can!
