La Vorágine

I came here often as a teenager an I’m glad they have kept up the great vibe and ambiance I always loved. The cherry pizzas are amazing and their salads too!

«If Bush wins again, I’m moving to Canada or Mexico.» Think back to 2004. This phrase was a common refrain. I heard it often and across a large swath of the country. I said I’d always be impressed if I saw someone live up to their word and make the move. Now spring forward to 2009. Mexico. Tlalpan. An adorable, cozy, dimly lit café, bar that feels like it was lifted from Brooklyn and plopped right down here. Then, hours into the first night there, we met the owner and his girlfriend /​wife, and lo… she’s from Jersey, moving to Mexico after saying «if Bush wins again, I’m moving.» And she did. And she’s helping run this bar which was such a warm welcome on our 20 day trek through a new city.
Tucked away on the backside of a courtyard square off the center of Tlalpan is a small door with a small bar, smattering of tables and couches, and then upstairs an even cozier collection of seats. The bar serves Cossack ale, which we learned is made a lot like the traditional way of chica: you dig a hole in dirt then let the ale /​booze ferment in it, then barrel it. Yes, pretty gnarly, but the barnyard funk takes you back in a good way.
I checked their updates over the past couple of years and it looks just the same, they’re still serving this Cossack ale, which the owner said wasn’t too many other places, if at all, and I’ve never found it online or anywhere else in DF.
We stayed at the Fiesta Inn which is just on the other side of the Perefico Sur, so you can cross the bridge, and walk straight into the town square for this bar. If you’re traveling for anything at Estadio Azteca, and staying at any nearby hotel, this is a wonderful little jaunt into a hole in the wall that will give you a warm welcome to your visit. And if you’re a local reading this, consider yourself lucky because it doesn’t take another Bush to win or lose for me to consider moving to this neighborhood.

Hace ya varios años este lugar no era La Vorágine Pizzería Bar, sólo era La Vorágine y se conocía, simplemente, como La Vora. Íbamos los miércoles y nos poníamos unas guarapetas impresionantes con música electrónica de todo tipo y forma. No pasaba de ser un bar con caguamas y algunos tragos, apto para empedar.
Pero desde hace unos dos o tres años, La Vorágine cambio de giro y comenzó a ofrecer comida de calidad: Pizzas, hamburguesas, papas y demás. Parecería que es muy común, pero el toque y el sazón de los que preparan estos alimentos posicionan a La Vora Pizzaería Bar en uno de los escaños culinarios más altos del Centro de Tlalpan. Sientes una vorágine alimenticia, casi literal.
Aunque el lugar parece pequeño, el piso de arriba le da una impresión de amplitud; además, los murales y los utensilios de cocina dan un toque chic impresionante para quienes estamos acostumbrados a los bares comunes y los restaurantes sencillos.
En suma, sin llegar a la presunción o pedantez, este lugar es muy bueno, y al mismo tiempo extraño, pues los meseros son tipos altos, flacos, barbones, de cabello largo y sin delicadeza, que atienden con seriedad y eficiencia.

Este lugar tiene la mejor terraza-​roof gardencito del mundo entero. Tienes que buscarla bien, está hasta el fondo y es el mejor lugar para estar sólo o con tus amigos. Ahora, si vas con pareja, tal vez prefieras alguno de los sillones del piso de arriba que tienen una atmósfera más de media luz. Donde sea que te instales, en La Vorágine podrás pasar la tarde con un buen café, un vinito, o una cerveza: su carta de cerveza artesanal es amplia y la cerveza de barril no tiene falla.
Las pizzas son espectaculares: cuidan mucho los ingredientes y el tiempo de cocción de estos para que queden en su punto. De hecho, si quieres pedirla de dos sabores, el cheff te orientará sobre qué combinaciones son pertinentes y cuáles no.
