Taquería El Califa

If you ask any of the locals they will tell you this is the place to go. Can’t get enough! We have been in Mexico City for 2 days and have been there twice. And will be going there a few more times before we leave. A friend suggested that we meet him there for dinner. We were not disappointed. Everything was outstanding. The desserts were all amazing. I had the brownie and my family had the Tres Leche. The icing on the Tres Leche makes it even more amazing. Plus you can eat a ton and spend a little USD. What I wouldn’t give to have a place like this in the states.

De los mejores tacos de la ciudad. Recomendables las costras y gaonas con queso. Servicio muy eficiente.

Was visiting Mexico City and met a very helpful local who ran a nearby café. She recommended El Califa, saying it was one of her favourite spots in the city for tacos. I definitely wasn’t disappointed!
I ended up having five tacos, three al pastor and two beef and each one of them was exactly what I was hoping for. We also got guacamole which was pretty tasty as well.
They have an English menu if your Spanish is rusty. Service was very attentive even though it was quite busy. I was hoping for great tacos on this visit to DF and this was right up there with the best.

No tengo muchas cosas más que agregar a todos los reviews que ya se han escrito sobre este lugar.
Los pros? Son tacos de excelentísima calidad, buena carne, fabulosas botanas (como el chicharrón de queso) y postres (como el pastel de tres leches), abiertos hasta MUY tarde, aceptan tarjetas, aguas naturales buenísimas, salsas para chuparte los dedos.
Los contras? Caro, mucha gastadera de plástico cuando pides a domicilio, servicio regular cuando vas al restaurante.
Además de eso quisiera agregar una cosa buena y una mala que creo que no se ha mencionado antes. La buena es que por lo general el servicio a domicilio es rápido, así que aunque digan 45 minutos a una hora en el teléfono, SIEMPRE han llegado antes. La mala es que más de una vez me han llegado los tacos fríos. Nada que el microondas no pueda arreglar pero sí es molesto.
Ah, y otras dos cosas, para mí muy importantes: los frijoles están BUENÉRRIMOS… Y los aguacates SIEMPRE vienen en PERFECTAS condiciones. En serio, tienen que tener un pacto con el demonio porque siempre vienen maduros listos para comerse, verde como debe ser, sin protuberancias ni partes negritas… no sé cómo le hacen!
Respeto todos los comentarios previos, pero creo que los que dieron dos estrellas fueron extremadamente duros. Me gustaría saber qué otros tacos recomiendan esas personas que tengan tan buen sabor, que puedas comer cómodamente en un local como el del Califa, con un menú tan variado, abierto hasta altas horas de la noche… Califa no es perfecto, pero sí creo que tantos puntos positivos son hard to beat!

I am an al pastor aficionado, so one of my biggest excitements in visiting Mexico City was to taste the best of the best al pastor tacos, in their birthplace.
I searched and searched and all I could find were a bunch of places that weren’t chain restaurants claiming to be the original, the best. I ended up here after reading a million reviews about how Califa was the best of the best.
The tacos were good… they had a million and one options and the tacos themselves were beautiful, but it felt like a chain fast food restaurant and nothing felt truly original or authentic. Definitely caters to the tourists.
In short… it was the ambiance that killed it a little for me. Although also a chain, El Tizoncito seemed a little better, service there was definitely superior.
Nonetheless, I took a good picture.

If you like loud house music blaring, feeling rushed to finish your food by waiters hovering over you constantly, and overpriced tacos, here’s your spot

Rich chilango place for tacos. Totally different from street food. Big chunks of meat. Done really differently. It was a surprise to me. But very, very good. Great sauces. Good deserts. Also cool to see the city’s elite descend from their SUVs as workers run to cater to their every move. Well, not so cool. But it gives you some perspective on the DF…

Wow! This was the best tacos in the Al Pastor category I have ever had. I ordered 2, and enjoyed them so much, I ordered another. Service was attentive, place was clean, and I can’t wait to get back here.

This is the BEST food I’ve had since being in Mexico City!!! OMG! The sad part about all of this is that they don’t have a restaurant like this in Atlanta! I’m a big fan of soul food, Mexican food, and seafood so this has been the most authentic Mexican food I’ve had to date!
I’m not very loose with giving people five stars and this place deserves it all. The atmosphere was absolutely phenomenal and the staff were very attentive! You have no idea how beautiful these people are not just on the outside but on the inside as well! Places like this here make reviews worth writing. I’m truly going to miss this place when it’s time to leave. All of the drinks and the food are really fresh! The quality of the food is off the charts! Your taste buds will give you confirmation that this food has not been processed as we are used to in the States!

Buenos tacos, excelente servicio. Hasta el agua de horchata está buena y ni hablar de los postres. Cuando sales del cine y está todo cerrado es una buena opción

Queso, queso, y mas queso! Here is what you need to do. To start you’ll need the cebollas, the queso fundido, and most definitely the chicharrón de queso. The chicharrón is a thing of beauty. For an entrée I prefer the pastor costras. But whatever you pick you really can’t go wrong. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice. In fact, I may go back right now.

Ir ao México e não ir ao Califa é como ir ao Rio e não ir a Copacabana — um sacrilégio.
Quando morava no DF esse era nosso ponto de encontro para jantar e fofocas, ou para um taco depois da balada (comida de cruda). Os clássicos são ótimos por isso não deixe de pedir um taco al pastor (original da Chilangolândia). Se quiser inovar um pouquinho recomendo: chicharrón de queso, quesadilla de hongos y queso e tinga de pollo. Sobrou um espacinho para a sobremesa? Não deixe de pedir o Pastel de Trés Leches con Cajeta, segundo uma das minhas amigas: «é o melhor bolo que você vai comer na vida».
O serviço é um pouco atrapalhado mas o preço é baixo e a comida é de qualidade — não tenha medo de passar mal.

Tenía muchas ganas de regresar a ésta cadena de taquerías que a pesar de ser algo «cariñosas», a mi parecer valen mucho la pena para satisfacer la tripa después de una noche loca.
Llegamos bastante borrosos pasadas las 2:30 am y la concurrencia era basta. Me alegró el taparme un ojo y ver que remodelaron el lugar de la condechi. Pusieron refris gigantes en el medio para separar áreas y presumir la considerable cantidad de bebidas espirituosas y no alegres con las que cuentan.
Pedí mis reglamentarios frijoles de la olla (para hacerla/​no de pedo), un taco al pastor, y un cráter de arrachera.
Los frijoles son buenísimos con la salsa tipo molcajete, y poniéndole guacamole a las tostaditas que los acompañan.
El taco al pastor a su vez me recordó aquellos viejos tiempos cuando vivía en el defectuoso, y me la amanecía en la Condesa… Y del taco: doradito, jugoso, suculennntooo!!!
Mis cosas favoritas para la glotonería en estos establecimientos son los cráteres. El de arrachera no me decepcionó. Ojalá me hubiera cabido otro…

Good place. The pastor is really good. Their specialty is the costra (there is a chance I am screwing up the name) which is a taco that is served with crispy fried cheese instead of the tortilla. It is pretty yummy. I love the nopalitos, but I feel this is a personal choice

Had a great experience at Taqueria El Califa. I would say this is probably one of the more modern taco places you are going to go to in Mexico City. This place is located in the trendy Condesa neighborhood.
Parking is really tough in Condesa, so I would recommend using the valet if you can! Just save yourself the trouble so you can stuff your face!
We arrived and it looked like the place was packed. our wait time was a short five minutes though! Once inside, be prepared to feel packed in. They get a lot of tables stuffed into this small place. So get close to the person next to you and remember that it is all about the food!
There is a pretty large cooler in the middle of the restaurant that has all of the ‘craft’ beer choices on display. You’ll have the mainstream tecates sure, but there were also a lot of interesting beers that I had not even heard of.
Let’s get to the tacos and the cheese. Now. my spanish is bad, but there was some sort of rolled queso that we started with that was absolutely awesome. It was crispy like a chip, but rolled like a taquito.
When you order a taco, make sure it has cheese in it. The do a like burn on the cheese so that it toughens up almost like a patty or like a pancake. It’s an awesome flavor. Almost like having queso fundido in your taco.
This is a great place for grabbing your first meal in Mexico City before you get a little more adventurous. As always, try the various salsas they put on the table. It will take your meal to another level. Just always be prepared for the spicy side!

One of my family’s most favorite taquerias in DF!
There was nothing disappointing about any of the meals that we ordered on our numerous visits. The service is good and the prices are just right. This particular location in Condesa is probably the best. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. My favorite is the tacos de ribeye, but the tacos al pastor are excellent too. Also, definitely try the chicharron de queso!

Why does this place only have 3.5 stars?!! I was in Mexico City last weekend visiting a friend who lives in Condesa, and we hit up this place on a Sunday evening. Um. It was amazing. I had the gaonas con queso tacos, and I’m still thinking about how good they were. The tacos with the salsas and grilled onions and aguacate… yum. Every bite was the perfect bite. Seriously, do yourself a favor and go here. I was skeptical about the gaonas because I’m not a massive meat eater but holy crap… it was delish. And that red flower water drink… agua fresca! So yummy + super refreshing!

I had heard some nice things about this place from other guests at where we were staying, and I did look on Unilocal to see what fellow Unilocalers had to say, but I would have to agree with Billy D. The tacos are just meat and cheese, even the pitas are the same way. It would’ve been nice to have the chopped onions and cilantro available, at least I’d feel like I was doing something a little healthy.
I ordered a Modelo especial and the partner ordered a couple glasses of wine. The cheese quesadilla is not what you’d expect if you’re from the U.S. But the meat is seasoned well and the salsas offered were really good. I kept using the green one with the onions. I also wanted to try the flan and the tres leches and though the flan was decent, it was the tres leches that was really good!
Service was attentive, although when the bill came, the waiter stayed close by to collect. I’m not sure if that’s the norm or if they were afraid we were going to dash. I was able to get rid of all my coins which I think annoyed him. I would come back to try some of the other things on the menu, and they do have one in English.

Decent, well kept Taco joint with small plates and good service.
Had the cactus leaves and Gaonas. Indio beer seems to be the local beer. It does not have as much taste as the craft beer I’m used to.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some great things on the menu — for example the queso y nopales (OMG thats amazing), the classic pastor taco, and the pastor crater. The 4 salsas you get at your table are nice. It’s open late. Pretty fast service. This is all great.
The standard tacos are boring and a bit overpriced, with only meat (not even cilantro/​onions) on the tortilla. The costras (fried cheese and meat) are okay, but you can’t really taste the meat. Don’t get me wrong, it’s solid, but don’t go out of your way for the food.

Lugar sobrevaluado. El original en San Cosme es mucho más changarro pero no es caro como éste, las porciones son más generosas y la salsa es excelsa, picante como debe ser. En el de Condesa, la salsa es turística, el sabor es estándar, el precio es caro y no hay algo sobresaliente.

This place isn’t my favorite taco haunt… but I come here because I sure do love their fresh guacamole. And their tres leches dessert rocks. :)

Aunque hay varias reseñas sobre El Califa, nadie habla de lo que más, más me gusta de este lugar: el jugo de coco, una bomba calórica deliciosa. En serio, yo he ido a comer al Califa nomás por el antojo de un jugo de coco.
Otra cosa de la que no han escrito: agradezco que en la última renovación del menú, agregaron algunas opciones vegetarianas. Yo no soy muy carnívora, así que me gusta tener alguna alternativa con verduras. Además de los nopalitos que tienen de entrada (que tienen excelente sazón), ahora ofrecen tacos con champiñones o rajas. El otro día comí una costra de champiñones y estaba bastante rica — no le pide nada a una de bistec.
Cuando sí ando de humor carnívoro, pido tacos de gaona o pastor, ambos muy ricos.
Eso sí, reitero lo que han dicho los demás: es una taquería cara, para ir muy de vez en cuando.

This place is solid and I take gringos here when I have friends and family visiting, but I’m just not as enamored with it as many seem to be. The ingredients are clearly very fresh, but the salsa are just OK and the al pastor is nothing to write home about. The Gaona con queso, however, is really spectacular. I always get it with a second tortilla because otherwise it is the world’s largest taco. The chicharon de queso is really excellent and, if you like nopales, the nopales are grilled whole leaves instead of the usual sliced ones you get at other taquerias.

No se porque razón, pero están buenísimos. Mis favoritos son los de costilla, así, bien asaditos, con un poco de salsa de molcajete y vaya cosa!
En algún momento se pusieron de moda y los precios no son tan baratos que digamos, pero si tienes antojo de estos tacos, se tiene que ir. La carta es amplia, tienen costillas, bistek, pollo, chuleta, quesadillas, frijoles charros y jugo de carne que también recomiendo mucho; también tienen cerveza, entonces las últimas veces que he llegado a ir, ya es muy noche y parece after party, entre la música alta, las bebidas y que ya estás empezando a comer un poquito, parece que empezará nuevamente la fiesta.
Siempre está lleno, por lo menos esta sucursal de la colonia condesa, a cualquier hora, por la mañana muchos van a curarse la resaca, y el resto del día a comer ricos tacos, ya en la noche como comenté, nuevamente a la fiesta.
El servicio es eficiente y amigable, el lugar está limpio.

Soy muy fan de los tacos y de sentarme a esperar con ansia a que me sirvan un taquito recién preparado. Sin embargo, por casualidades del destino, mi experiencia con el Califa ha sido la mayoría de las veces «para llevar con entrega a domicilio».
Hemos pedido tacos de bistec, costras y tacos de pastor para llevar. Me gusta que todo lo empacan por separado: en un plato la carne, en otro las tortillas y en otros los de pastor. En una bolsita aparte te mandan suficientes limones y casi siempre te preguntan de cuál salsa prefieres, pero si pides de todas te las sirven sin problema (mis favoritas son la asada y la verde que son de las más picosas).
Las tortillas son muy ricas, son recién hechas y un bistec te alcanza fácilmente para dos tacos, son cortes muy delgados, pero largos. Definitivamente su carne es una delicia.
Esta sucursal es la más cercana a mi casa y por eso es a la que me refiero. El servicio de entrega es rápido y tiene un costo adicional del 5 o 6 por ciento del total de tu cuenta.
Digamos que en cuanto a tacos a domicilio, El Califa es mi opción predilecta.

Soy amante de los tacos, por lo mismo los he comido en muchos lugares. Tengo que hablar de esta taquería que la verdad me decepcionó o al menos a mi parecer no es lo que se decía de ella.
Para empezar debo decir que los precios son bastante caros, entiendo que es una zona de altos precios, pero son tacos y la verdad es que no son tan grandes. En cuanto a sabor la carne es buena, pero no la mejor que he probado, lo que destaco muchísimo son las salsas.
Tiene buen servicio, aunque el problema es que siempre está lleno y supongo que eso hace que no limpien muy bien las mesas, me parece que es un punto que deben cuidar bastante. Un punto a favor es que aceptan tarjetas de crédito y están abiertos hasta altas horas de la noche por lo que son una buena opción para bajar la borrachera de la fiesta.

El Califa tiene más reputación que otra cosa, pero es una de las paradas obligadas según las guías turísticas de esta ciudad.
Yo soy más fan del taco callejero, pero debo reconocer la gaona es un GRAN taco y que lo preparan con cariño. Si la piden a la vuelta y vuelta prepárense para comerse un pedazo de carne casi crudo, deliciosamente marinado.
Para mi este lugar es bastante caro para lo que es, pero siempre está lleno, así que debo ser la única que lo piense. El servicio es bueno, como toda taquería establecida, los meseros sonríen y te ofrecen las aguas frescas de Jamaica, horchata y tamarindo.
Mi recomendación es que nunca lo pidan a domicilio, aunque están abiertos hasta altas horas de la mañana, cuando te llevan comida a casa es un ataque masivo al medio ambiente: cada pedazo de carne viene en un recipiente plástico separado, así que te llega una pila de envases de plástico que cualquier ambientalista lloraría.
Lo que sí tiene es que es la única taquería abierta que acepte tarjeta después de las 4 a.m. en la Condesa, perfecta para los taquitos después de la fiesta.

No hay nada mejor que estar en México y comer tradicionales tacos. El Califa es un lugar que ofrece este tipo de delicias para el paladar, y que además ofrece un buen ambiente con música amigable y una arquitectura super moderna y bonita.
Hoy en específico me tocó un mesero muy buena onda y amable con muchas ganas de platicar. Me pedí una costra de bistec ¡un plato que jamás falla! Y para variar lo disfruté muchísimo. Este restaurante está siempre lleno, pero siempre hay una mesita que sobra para uno sin necesidad de hacer fila de espera.
Ahí va todo tipo de persona, ya que se encuentra en la Condesa: una vez vi a los jugadores del equipo de Futbol de Panamá, quienes estaban felices comiendo tacos al pastor.
Este es un buen lugar para comer bien pagando a un precio razonable.
