This is pretty much the sort of place I think of when I think of fish & chips. Linoleum, the hiss of the fryers, that particular smell of oil in the air. Oh, and ridiculous specials written up in vivid and taped to the window — four hot dogs, two burgers, eight fish, seven potato fritters, $ 5. Not quite that, but still enormous amounts of food for very small prices. The food itself is pretty good, as far as fish and chips go. The chips themselves(always the critical test) probably get a B from me — good, but not exemplary. The burgers are nice though, or at least the one I had was. AJ’s earns extra points for being an important Auckland landmark. Need to know where Owairaka Ave meets Mt. Albert Road? Well actually you already do, even if you didn’t realise that was what those two roads were called.
