I don’t know how I ended up dining at this place, and it’s not like anything terrible happened, but I’m unlikely to return. The service is okay, it’s not amazing. The location is lovely — looking out over the water at all those boats. Beautiful on a stunning Auckland summer day. … But the food is just average. I ordered bacon and eggs on ciabatta. And while you can’t exactly screw that up, you can make it pretty average — which is exactly what this place did. The bacon was terrible quality, it was covered in fat and it came out looking horrible on the plate, just dumped on the side. My poached eggs hadn’t been drained properly and were watery tasting as well, so that made the bread taste awful. The bread wasn’t well toasted, it was somewhere in between… I just don’t get it. I could have got better at home, and I wouldn’t have paid $ 18 for it. The muesli that my friends ordered was bland and didn’t come with any yoghurt, so it looked dry as anything. Coffee was average, it wasn’t disgusting but it wasn’t great. It’s just… pretty average. It seem clearly to me that this is a place that relies solely on its location.

Wow this place is perhaps one of those great spots that not too many people know about, and for those lucky ones that do know, then well done both you and me have found a fantastic little café. One of the reasons is the location, on summer days and nights its just beautiful next the water, you can have a bite to eat and a drink and just sit there and appreciate the stillness of the water and look out at the yachts, but be away from the busy viaduct area. I’ve been here mostly for a drink and nibble after work, however I have heard its now open for Breakfast. So they are open for Breafast-lunch-dinner Tuesday to Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sundays, closed on Mondays(they need to have some rest).

The Billfish Café has a lot going for it. It has a unique location, at Pier Z in Westhaven, the marina’s busiest pier. There is plenty of parking and and unsurpassed view of the marina/Auckland harbour. The décor is nice, the food tasty and the ambience is good. I do balk a little at the prices however, at around $ 35 for a lunch main you might be surprised at the bill that arrives at the end of that relaxing midday repas. The service is also quite patchy, I’ve had to wait up to 15 minutes for a(good) takeaway coffee when they were not busy at all. If they upped there game and dropped their prices a little they could get 5 stars, but they’re not short of a client or two.

A great little café nestled on the shore in front of the yachts at Westhaven Marina, I’ve always been a fan of Bill Fish. I’m down there at least once a week with my dragonboat team training, and am always greeted with a smile when I grab my(excellent) coffee. The food is pretty awesome too, fresh fresh fish and a great breakfast menu to enjoy while the sun rises over the gently swaying masts, it’s a great place to spend a morning. Nice and quiet too, away from any other bars and restaurants, good little secret here
