Not that impress with the food here, I had the seafood chowder and it tasted like it was out of a bag the kind you buy at countdown(delmains seafood chowder) for a main I had the pork belly, the fat wasn’t rendered and the crackling was non existent, chewy. The beer seems over priced for local beer charging as if it were import boutique beer. The garden bar ok but nothing special, footpath table stuff. Don’t think I’ll be frequenting this spot. The fact they have a live band is what saves it so for that reason I’ll give them an rxtra star.

Black Salt can be a hang out for drinks on the weekend or a somewhat«Classy» option for dinner(for west Auckland standards of course) The outdoor area is roomy and well decorated with planter boxes bordering around the side walk with, in winter gas heaters to warm the night time drinkers. Also has live music during the weekend nights. The Inside has a well decorated, low light cabin fell to it with plenty of tables separated enough that your not rubbing shoulders with randoms. The menu offers its highlight stone grill range which is a great hands on experience for someone who wants a little excitement to grill there own cuts of meat, also on the menu are generous sized burgers and fries ect. Black Salt has a very large range of drinks to chose from aswell as a range of cocktails that are updated each season? Overall, if you are wanting a good night out in New Lynn, Black salt is one of the best options you can take.

Food is great, service is good! Music makes the night interesting if your there for a few drinks. Everytime I’m there, I enjoy my time :) There was one occasion they had 1 girl waitressing and behind the bar at lunch time and I suppose they didn’t expect there to be many people. Poor girl forgot my drink order about 5 times but having hospitality experience, I know what it’s like.

A local pub like establishment. We have had a few large casual get togethers there. The food and service were good and certainly matched our expectations for a relaxing and fun evening. There is both indoor and outdoor dining options and for a relaxed place in the middle of New Lynn it works well.(Ps the cocktails are pretty good!)

Definitely the best bar out west. Good selection of wine and beers, but everything I have ever eaten here has been bland and under/overcooked. Two stars for classiness and great outdoor area

I came here before my tattoo appointment to grab a quick bite to eat. The staff was having a meeting but that did not make them any less attentive. I order a coffee drink and some nachos. In America we use salsa, they did not which was on but different. Enjoyed my drink and food. I wish I could have came on another night when they had music.

The first time I walked into Black Salt, I was struck by how out of place it seemed in New Lynn. Everything was a bit too shiny, a bit too new. which is odd, considering the name of the suburb. As the area surrounding it has slowly improved, Black Salt has started to gel a bit with its surrounding area, which can only be a good thing. Sitting outside can be quite interesting, especially with all the road works that seem to constantly be going on in New Lynn — you get to see a lot of road rage — some of it is almost Homer-esque. The drinks are quite standard — if a bit overpriced. I think where Black Salt picks its game up is with its food — which is great, and well priced. Unfortunately the customer service still has a way to go, as though they are trying to cling on to a faint reminder of the way things used to be.

Oh, Black Salt, I really want you to be my local, but you’re making it a bit hard for me. Firstly, the good: it’s looks good. The design is impressive, and it’s one of the few places out West that isn’t a daggy old-man’s bar(not that I don’t enjoy those as well). In the evenings, you can sit in the sun on the footpath, which will be even more pleasant once the roadworks are complete soon. The bartenders are usually pretty friendly, which helps you get over the slightly spendy prices. Now, the not-so-good: please, why don’t you want me to be able buy food? As another reviewer mentioned, there’s no vegetarian mains there anymore, which means I’ll just go somewhere else! We also had a waitress there once who told off one of our dinner party after she questioned a cut of meat(what our waitress didn’t know was that this person is a butcher and did know what had been presented wasn’t what was on the menu); unfortunately this left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth. However, that was just once, and perhaps she was having a bad night as generally the service is friendly.

Black Salt is the westie local for youngens and the more mature patrons. Its snazzy and showy and likes to be noticed. The service is okay-ish although pretty laid back. I don’t really go here to eat(vegetarian options are near nill) so usually its a drink and some bread and dips or fries sort of scenario. It fun sitting outside — though it is right by the ligths so there are always cars which makes it kind of gross. I think the best part of this place is the bathrooms. there worth a marvel or two. Not a place i’d visit often though.

Black Salt is probably the nicest bar out west, for younger people and older people. It’s got a nice atmosphere whether you’re there for a good night out, to watch the game or to get a bite with your friends or family. I’ve come here quite a few times and the food is really great and a good price. Pretty pricey drinks for West Auckland mind you. They’ve got stonegrill if you like that sort of thing, but I’m well over that fad and if I wanted to cook my own food I’d do it at home for free. Staff are generally pleasant, but the best part is the design. It’s fresh and new, and they have square toilet seats. The actual bar may be a little out of place in grotty New Lynn, come to think of it.

We came to this restaurant in New Lynn a while ago and were generally impressed with it all. We have not been able to go back since then as the appear to have taken the vegetarian main courses off the menu. We intended going there for my brother-in-laws birthday recently but out of a party of 8, three were vegetarians so we had no option but to look elsewhere. Like I’ve said, when we went last time we were impressed — my rump steak came on its own ‘stonegrill’. I thought this was a gimmick but it cooked the meat evenly and it was tender to eat. Mussels seem to be popular here as they comprise several of the side and main dishes. You can actually get a pot of them — yes that’s a kilo worth of shellfish! Black Salt has much to recommend it but I am still a bit miffed they have taken the vegetarian option off the menu. Surely it would make sense to have at least one veggie main course so as not to deter larger parties(such as ours) from coming here.
