To me, Bluebells Cakery fits into the ‘fairy tale’ category. Not because it’s brimming with brightly colored treats but mainly because everything is PERFECT. Christmas tree cupcakes with expertly manicured green icing? Brandy-soaked christmas cake that literally looks like it’s covered in jewels? Yep… here. The space is lovely — lots of natural light with a very open, clean feel(maybe due to the fact that basically the entire space is white). They have one large table to accommodate groups, a few two and four tops and then seating along the front window, bar style. The service was friendly, efficient and patient as, per standard, I felt obligated to ask about a number of the different offerings to ensure a wise decision was made #firstworld. My friend and I decided to go for two loaves to share — salted caramel banana and lemon raspberry. They were both pretty freaking delicious. The tartness of the lemon cake was nicely balanced by the thin layer of icing drizzled on top. The banana was a bit richer(hellllo salted caramel icing), so depending on your mood, something to please everyone. They have some savoury items too including sandwiches, savoury scones, and I even spotted a quinoa salad. The coffee is Supreme and it was smooooth, although not very strong(again, preference). I also found it a bit odd that they use takeaway cups and cutlery for sit in’s…yes, they were compostable but… reusable mugs would be better. All in all, very pleased that Bluebells has come to the city centre so that even sans vehicle, these treats are in reach! Also: they were tonnnns of people here picking up online orders(like their infamous donut cake(!!!)). So… if you are looking for your next made-to-order cake, I’d try here.

What a beeeautiful new store Karla and the team have created. The pastel color palette, fresh florals and beautifully decorated cakes… it’s a sweet tooth’s dream! For me it’s all about the caramel slice. They do three diff types(macadamia, salted caramel and classic). Rather predictably the salted caramel is my favorite. It has the perfect amount of sea salt and the dark caramel is pushed right to the edge. I will warn you that this store, although perfectly formed, is small and rather deservedly, busy. We went on the weekend and it was jam-packed so opted for takeaways but I’d imagine mid-week it wouldn’t be too much of an issue!

There is one thing you come to Bluebells for, the cupcakes, perfectly sized and tasty. The décor of the 2nd expanded Bluebells Bakery was just as delish as the sweet cupcakes, gorgeous decorations, like a pastel coloured candy store with fresh flowers on the table. v cute.

The place was packed when I visited and didn’t have space for me to enjoy my cupcake then and there. I absolutely love the décor of the place, there was so many fresh flowers around that really brightened up the atmosphere. I took away a coffee and walnut and lemon curd cupcake. Both felt like you were eating a small cloud, the coffee and walnut was my fav — just the right amount of coffee flavour and not too overpowering :)

When a friend told me that Bluebells had opened up a 2nd shop and oh-so-casually asked me if I’d like to visit since it was so close to where we were having lunch already, I excitedly waved my hands in the air and nodded in agreement that dessert was needed. I’m a big fan of the Hillsbourough shop though I try to only visit on special occasions since I want to eat everything in there. The new shop stocks pretty much the same fare as the original store: cupcakes, cakes, slices, fudge, brownies, and assorted cabinet food. And as per the original store, cupcakes were the main feature here as well with various flavors on offer. Oh! and yes, there is also a delicious looking gluten free cupcake that is sneakily hiding among the other beautiful cupcakes on display. I chose a lemon loaf-cake that was beautifully garnished with some dried feijoas and a sweet lemon icing to go with my Supreme flat white. My friend chose the lemon cupcake with a to-die-for butter cream icing and a lemon curd center! At this point I was lamenting the fact that I didn’t have a separate dessert stomach and no I couldn’t really eat anymore so take out it was. I bought another blueberry loaf-cake to take home for my family and this time it was garnished with beautiful edible flowers. The lady helpfully put this into a box for me so I didn’t have to worry about crushing the decorations. A+ for thoughtfulness and packaging! As we left, our table was quickly occupied by a new wave of people that came in with dessert in mind as well. All in all, it was a good day and I highly recommend on visiting this store which is now in a nice central location.
