As a Chinese American raised up on Chinese food and having been to Hong Kong, this place was pretty authentic and their food was actually very good. It was our first dinner in Central Auckland on their last night at the location at 18 Beach road before they moved to 302 Dominion Road. They had a lot on their menu to choose from however as we are only two people, we could only eat so much. If only they were open longer, we probably would’ve went back on a different night.

Beach road is a funny street for anything apart from traffic really but there are a few little restaurants hiding in the background. One of these reluctant stars is Daddy’s kitchen, which doesn’t look much from the outside, nor once you breach the front door. It was completely empty during my visit, which is always a little disconcerting as it felt a little like I was being watched like a criminal as I waited(not for long) for my food! That aside, my dumplings were pretty good. Not necessarily the best I have ever eaten but not objectionable in any way. I think the location will ultimately mean Daddy’s kitchen is rarely busy during the day, which is a pity because if it was more prominent downtown I am sure it would attract people in. I was assured that it is busier in the evenings though, so if you plan a visit, maybe go for dinner.
