Incredibly cute, endearing little bar. Being one of my locals, I have seen it in many guises: Full to brimming with«happy» people singing and dancing out of tune and step while having the time of their lives, awol parents eating pizza outside in the sun sipping on a wine or a beer. Gratitude brimming from their eyes for babysitters. Groups of women chatting and sharing a bottle of bubbles before a big night. Mates — male and female — sitting back and relaxing over a debrief of their week. Some nights the bar has live music. Such a great concept for a small local. Non-threatening atmosphere always and a good wine and beer selection. I feel safe and part of the community in The Elbow Room and love being able to walk up my street to sit in a pink sunset with a glass of chardonnay. A friendly place, there’s always someone to chat to. Friday night was no exception. Three of us had a great time before heading off for dinner. I wish there were more small local bars around like The Elbow Room.

Cute corner bar. Good wine list. Live music. Reminds me of some of the tiny corner bars in east village. Serve snack food only but what they do have is tasty.

If you are looking for a nice local pub that isn’t too pretentious you would be well advised to check out Elbow Room. It reminds me of being in Barcelona, although they have Peroni on tap so I guess I might have to revise that opinion to being in Lombardia. Either way, it’s a nice place to kick back and have a drink without having to worry about whether you are wearing the right clothes, or talking about the right music, or back room theatre production. If you want somewhere to disappear for a couple of hours, get yourself down to the Elbow room Heaters are available outside for when it get’s nippy towards 11pm, or when the beer blanket starts to wear off.

The Elbow Room is one of my dad’s favourite bars. Situated on Jervois Road, it’s handy to Ponsonby nightlife as well as being a cheap taxi to town, so is a great place to begin a night out. Conversely, it’s also a nice place to enjoy a few quiet ones with your parents on a Sunday afternoon. The Elbow Room is exactly how it sounds — small, cosy, friendly and locally oriented. Most of its patrons are regulars so there is a definite sense of familiarity and a very laidback vibe at The Elbow Room. The décor matches this homely intimate vibe, with heavy drape curtains and subtle lighting emphasising the cosy atmosphere of the bar. Serving a variety of wines, beers and spirits — you can purchase any drink you fancy at The Elbow Room, including delicious cocktails. An array of bar snacks is also on hand, and I was ecstatic to find Peroni, one of my favourite beers, is now available on tap at The Elbow Room! Tip: Not so good for dancing due to its small size!

Small and unassuming on Jervois Road, this Herne Bay local has been around for years and never succumbs to fads or passing fashion trends. It’s solid, reliable and the perfect place to catch up over a glass of wine. It’s fairly dark and narrow inside, but on a summery afternoon try and grab one of the outside tables and watch the world go by. I’ve also hired out the whole venue for a private function and the staff were friendly and amicable, the setting perfect for an informal gathering of 50-odd people. We were able to bring our own music and basically take over! It was about three years ago so I can’t remember what their minimum spend was but from memory it was nothing if not reasonable. I hope that Elbow Room continues to stand true to it’s roots and that I’ll be enjoying a beverage here for many years to come.
