Ok — so this place is super trendy and the fish and twice cooked chips taste amazing but be warned!!! We have tried this place twice, and both times have felt so ill that it’s just not worth it. We think it must be the crazy amount of oil that comes out of both the fish and chips which is a real shame — because normal once fried chips aren’t available. Unfortunately we’ve not been back!

Fishsmith is certainly a notch-up the typical kiwi fish and chips shop but still with the usual charm and nostalgia. My first experience was on a Saturday evening when I was suddenly in desperate need of some fresh fish for a dinner party after my cunning cats had feasted on the fish I’d purchased earlier in the day. Fishsmith came to the rescue — even when I couldn’t pay at the time(they only take cash or EFTPOS and I’d raced out of the house with only my credit card). The choices are mostly simple and everything is very fresh. Some nice salads and coleslaw are on offer too. The store is often very busy and it’s a shame that some of the staff are rather surly. Fishsmith deserves its recent accolades and top placements in Auckland’s fish and chip shops.

I have eaten at ‘The Fishsmith’ on two occasions now. The first, ‘eat-in’, and the second, ‘take-away’. Most impressed by both experiences. The restaurant provides a hearty and fulfilling meal, which is realistically priced for quality seafood. Thank you, and good luck :-)

I first heard about #Fishsmith on Instagram a few months ago, so this place was on my ‘to do list’ for 2014 haha! To be honest, I am drawn to retailers who put their product on social media, making them transparent and accessible. From the outside, the premises feel instantly clean and contemporary. The menu is fresh, inspiring and reasonably priced: paua fritters, smokey chickpea bites, calamari, fried pickled mussels or potato scallops definitely tempted my discerning palate. Decided on market fish and hand-cut twice fried chips. Oh, and some handmade smoked garlic aioli. Verdict: satisfying & flavoursome. Good value for money, $ 6.50 kids menu, $ 5 fish & $ 5 chips! Truly Unilocaled!

I love a re-invented F & C’s shop. Not too much spin on the classic — instead of a fish burger there’s a few«Buns» we had the fish sarnie — grilled FOD with pickled fennel, lettuce and home made tartare which is excellent incased in a yummy brioche hot dog shaped bun — would have been better they didn’t slice it right through as it’s tricky to keep all the ingred’s in there. Keen to try the others — calamari and a vego one with chickpea bites. Everything else is pretty much the same, just not as extensive, E. g no potato fritters or crab sticks. Service is lovely and fast, we were allowed to sit outside The Elbow Room and have beer with our meal which was cool. If you’re taking home to eat there’s a couple of sides — Slaw or green salad, and a cool range of sauces like chilli jam.
