It was a praticularly warm sunny afternoon when we decided to bail off the Outer Link early and dive into Gables. You may have already guessed from the name of this tavern that the main drinks on offer are from the Speight’s brewery in the deep south of Otago. Nothing wrong with that mind you, I am fond of a pint of Summit. They have a couple of stellar special offerings: 1kg of ribs and a pint for $ 25 and they also do a 1.8 litre ‘super’ jug for those people who don’t like getting off their seat too often.

I went here recently for a three course meal with my partner’s big family(aunties and cousins et al!) recently and I was very impressed with how accommodating the staff were. A lot of the family had babies and they were great with that; dealt really well with kids running around and having to heat up milk bottles and such. I had ribs to start, which were great but I was a bit disappointed with my lamb shank main. I think lamb shank should be melt in the mouth and falling off of the bone, but this was a bit chewy and just not as flavoursome as I’d hoped. The Black Cherry Chicken Breast with kumara mash of my partner’s I tried was much better, it was very rich in flavour. It’s a very light and airy place and it does remind me of a traditional English country pub and my partner loved the amount of real ales on the bar menu and at $ 49.50 for the 3 course set menu, I thought it was pretty good value.

I went to Gables’ for my boyfriends birthday dinner after hearing great things about the selection on their menu. I called the restaurant earlier in the morning to secure a booking for a table for two. Upon our arrival it appeared as though we did not have a booking, the gentleman who had taken our booking had forgotten to note it down. We were told to order drinks and go sit in the bar area while the waitress sorted something out for us, Not to ruin a perfectly lovely evening, I remained in high spirits ordered our drinks and sat in the bar area. I won’t lie I was so hungry so when the waitress told us she had found us a table after 20 minutes I could’ve kissed her. We had the ribs as a starter and they were absolutely delicious, not tough at all. They melted in my mouth and the sauce was like no other. Although all our meals took some time to get to our table I say it was all worth the wait as they were delicious.
