Game of Rhones

Was lucky enough to receive tickets to Auckland’s hottest wine event of the year yesterday, Game of Rhones. As the tongue in cheek title suggests, this epic wine tasting event was Game of Thrones themed, meaning that yes, there were some very enthusiastic winos and vintners sporting full Westerosi Regalia! The event itself was a homage to wine cultivated from the world-​famous Rhone Region in France, with suppliers and growers alike on site at the ever fabulous shed 10 to educate wine-​peasants such as myself. The event also had wonderful food on offer from Bird on a Wire, such as oxtail an mash to really lend that dinner in the Seven Kingdoms feel. A wine tasting with a massive twist… A Game of Thrones twist! And the first time that it has come to NZ after three years in Australia.
A great collection of vineyards represented, some very well known, some lesser known vineyards from across NZ and also Australia. All the vineyards were presenting the best of their Rhôné Valley wines, so it was a fantastic way to sample a range of Syrah, Viognier and Grenache varietals.
Was very impressed by the effort put in by the wine merchants to dress up. Really added to the atmosphere. Fantastic location as well, as it really suited the theme. Beautiful views of the harbour as the sun set.
Got a couple of Riedel glasses to boot. Would have been amazing to have had a few more food options available, as was very easy to stay on for a long time. Great event!
