Good value burgers, fresh ingredients and something just a bit different from the competition. Staff are always friendly and orders completed quickly.

Handmade Burgers in Kingsland are about as good as the humble burger can get. There are a vast number of options here, each as delectable as the last — I usually get the beef one with everything in it(forget what it’s called) — the works, needless to say. It’s impeccably cool too, located as it is in a converted petrol station on Kingsland’s main drag. I’m not from the area and I’m probably not cool enough to be in there, but I do make the odd visit — it’s certainly an indispensable part of my Eden Park matchday routine.

I was a sad, sad pescatarian when I rang Handmade Burgers and they told me that the Troy Tempest burger(pan fried fish with lemon pepper and tartare) was no longer available. Luckily these guys make a huge number of vegetarian options, so it was easy to say bye-bye to the tempest and hello to the pan-fried marinated tofu burger, which came with satay sauce. YUMINTHEFACE. Holy crap. If you’re into food that’s high on the taste scale and negative on the animals scale, give this burger a whirl. By the way, Handmade Burgers is not a drive thru restaurant, despite locals trying to make it one in late 2012. Don’t let the driveway-looking entry to this place fool you, you’ll need to park on the road to enjoy a Handmade Burger treat.

Apparently they have three vegetarian burger options but I couldn’t have my first two choices because they didn’t have the ingredients. So that was a disappointing start but at least the burger I did get was pretty tasty. And the chips were good. I always judge a place on its chips. I was the designated picker-upper for our phone order and it was ready and waiting and still hot when I got there. It was packed into paper bags, all the burgers were clearly labelled so it was easy to see whose was whose, and I also also offered an additional couple of bags to put down on my car seat to avoid any greasy leakage into my car, which was a considerate thought(and one I didn’t think of myself). The prices are reasonable but I think they are at least as good as Burger Queen whose burgers are at least a few dollars cheaper.

Handmade Burgers is cool. Unquestionably. They make massive delicious burgers, they have pleasing graphic design, they’re in a converted petrol station, and they’re not a chain like Burgerfuel so they must be more authentic and real. Plus they’re in Kingsland. Cool. This may be the problem with Handmade. They’re cool, and they know it. The service wasn’t surly, and it wasn’t rude, but it also wasn’t … friendly. Service work is always boring and demeaning but part of the job is hiding your distaste for the situation. Smiles are free, and other platitudes. This is a small complaint though. The main thing is the food was quick and very tasty. The burgers deserve their Metro awards, and the chips were about as good as chips get. I would happily eat there again. Only other suggestion: the menu could do with more vegetarian options, because they’re pretty limited.

You don’t have to get far into this converted petrol station to know that Handmade Burders is a firm favourite with locals — it was voted the best bugers in Auckland in 2007, 2008, 2019, 2011 by the likes of the Herald and Metro magazine. I don’t know what happened in 2010 and 2012, but based on my burger they could be up for the award again in 2013. The staff were friendly and my food came quickly. I sat in the«drive through» area and watched Kingsland life go by. Note though, that it’s a not a real drive through so if you’re rocking up on a Friday night expect to spend a while finding a car park nearby.
