Back home from a week away in West Island. An impromptu trip on a Saturday with friends old and new. This magical place used to be a day trip. Now it’s close enough to pop in for a pint or two.

Well if you have a motorbike around auckland, thats surely the place to go for a cold one. During the week end it is full of Harleys and motorbikes. The surrounding is beautiful with a river flowing next to the pub. The pub is based on a colonial type house which makes it very beautiful. Lot of place on the deck to enjoy sunshine and get some snacks. Food menu is limited but thats not the point. Point will be to enjoy chat with friends, with a nice surroundings and chill during a lazy sunday.

Absolutely fanastic pub with plenty of character and a must-stop on your trip north or heading home. I came here one night after a day off from hiking the Te Araroa trail and was sure to carbo-load with a hearty meal of steak and chips(reasonable price for a good-sized portion) and have a few drinks(which, in the company, turned into quite a few more!) Later on in the night we were on the search for food to soak up our beverage consumption and the bar tender gave us free pies. Maybe it had something to do with our Puhoi local friend but hey, what a win. There’s a wall of foreign currency left behind by years of tourists which adds to the general feel of the place. A really cool little local in a historic building in a neat little place. I also came back the next day and had some kind of icecream sundae before continuing my journey and it was pretty tip-top.

The Puhoi Pub is a charming old local watering hole and a must see if you’re in Puhoi. When I say old, I mean ancient; it was built in 1879. The history of the place is amazing(it must be haunted) you can just picture the hardy bohemian settlers that would have been here back in the day. Today it’s still very much ‘a local’; famers and workers from around the area stop in after a hard days work. The historic village of Puhoi is also a popular stop on the tourist trail, so it does get pretty busy. There’s plenty of seating though; especially in the huge outdoor area. Sit out in the sun on a Sunday afternoon, have a pint of cider and a big plate of fish and chips and soak in the history. Just leave before it gets dark when the ghosts come out

A Sunday lunch wouldn’t be the same without a stop at the world famous Puhoi Pub. This charming destination north of Auckland is fun for the whole family. I loved looking at the motorcycles parked outside, while their daring urban cowboys are quenching their thirst on the lawn. I can recommend the fish and chips, and please take a look around while you wait; the interior is really something special. After the meal and a few cold ones, you can take a stroll across the lawn to the waterfront, where you can still see signs of the original harbour.
