I’m so glad I have found Renkon. Cheap, cheerful and tasty. With $ 12 main, $ 5 sides and free tea it is tempting to have it every day. The mains are deceptively filling and I was unable to finish my Chicken Katsu egg with rice and side of spicy karaage chicken. I’m already thinking about my next visit…

What can I say. I love Renkon, I just love their Misodare Chicken Udon with soup. And their Karaage chicken as a side dish. I have not been to Parnell branch for over 8 years now, and its still delivering outstanding food at a very reasonable price. Don’t let the size of the bowl fool you, the udon is deceiving filling. And I always feel full after consuming it within mere minutes. Keep up the great work guys!

I have been here twice and every time it has been a delight! $ 11.50 for lunch mains with $ 5 sides! Bargain. You order and pay at the counter. Water is self serve as well as if you get tea. I love the Lotus root chips! Different yet tasty.

This Renkon is pretty cool, for starters it is like dining in a cave. It is small and dark but somehow not unpleasant, overall it is very comfortable actually. The staff are really upbeat and there is a lot of energy down here with staff hurrying about, coming and going from the kitchen which you get a view of too which is always fun to watch. The food comes fast too and the menu is pretty good, a lot of variation and the food is rather cheap especially considering the proportions. The last time I was here they moved tables and chairs around for us so our group could be seated by a power outlet to charge a laptop. So you get really decent fresh food and wonderful service to match, real bang for your buck. Can’t ask for much more than that.

I have been to a couple of different Renkon’s and while most of them are very average, the one in Parnell stands out as a really great restaurant. The menus are identical from restaurant to restaurant but for some reason the food from the Parnell branch is more tasty, I am willing to concede that this could be all in my head, but they do cook the food from raw ingredients so there could be variation in the different branches. They have also made a really nice job of the décor, it is down a flight of stairs so it is a peaceful contrast from Parnell Rd, and it looks nice and Japanesey. A great meal for under $ 15.

I like all the Renkon restaurants for the cheap and cheerful factor, but the Parnell branch is a little different. For starters, it’s set downstairs off the road and has a bit more of an authentic Japanese look, so it feels a bit more like a restaurant. The fact that you can order a beer or wine here is also a bonus, stretching the meal out a bit longer and making it more of a social experience. I only wish they would not call cabbage«salad» and actually give you a lettuce salad with your main. Otherwise it’s good food and if you like raw cabbage you’ll like the«salad» too.

Renkon is a staple for anyone who needs an inexpensive, good meal in Auckland’s CBD. The menu consists mostly of donburi(bowls of rice or noodles with toppings), with various side dishes. Karaage chicken(basically Japanese KFC) is a favourite, as is the Teriyaki Tofu on rice. The miso soup is good. There are four branches in the city, each with slight differences. The Parnell Renkon is the only one that is licensed, so you can grab a beer with your Yakiniku beef. The Parnell Renkon is also my favourite because it’s the only branch that offers a raw salmon donburi, with avocado and salad on rice. At $ 11.50, it’s a steal(and a delicious one at that). We dined there tonight. Green tea was complimentary and the staff were capable and friendly. I need not mention the food as it’s consistently good. To sum it up? Easy and cheap. We’ll be back soon.
