Everyone loves Thai — it’s just foreign enough to be exotic but not so adventurous that white people can’t handle it. Perfect for most Kiwis then — maybe that’s why there’s Thai places everywhere! Anyway, this Ruan Thai is a pretty sweet example of a Thai place, located perfectly on the Mission Bay beachfront one level up from the street. We came here a while back for a mate’s going away party(another joining the brain drain!), and they were very accommodating to the needs of our 20-strong party. Grabbed me a delicious slow cooked pork curry thing and it was most lovely — pleasantly hot. Very reasonably priced, and the service was prompt and professional. Would return!

There seems to be an abundance of decent Thai restaurants in or near the Eastern Bays, with Ruan Thai definitely part of this list. I’d have to say Ruan Thai had the best Toong Thong(also known as money bags) I have tried, perfectly cooked with some sort of addictive flavouring on the outside. This was a great way to start my Ruan Thai takeaway experience. I also ordered the California Beef, a funky dish mainly due to the quirky ingredient of cream cheese in the dish. I am not quite sure why I ordered this dish, maybe because I am a fan of always trying something new, but I enjoyed it. The cream cheese provided a interesting, mainly refreshing texture to the dish, with the beef being particularly spicy(maybe this is the reason why it is included in the dish). Parking is simple, underneath the adjacent Rickshaw Eddy’s bar.
