Gerne wieder!

Having a kebab shop in the centre of the city is competitive business — probably why this is one of the only places in Auckland you can get a kebab so cheap. Yes, it is the same price as its competitor down the road, however it is considerably cheaper than most kebabs you will get in most shopping malls in the rest of Auckland. For $ 5 I got a decent sized falafel kebab with 3 different types of sauces. It was messy(as all kebabs are) but it was absolutely delicious — their falafel is very tasty and they didn’t completely drown it with sauce. Service was really fast and efficient, so I didn’t have to wait too long. There is seating available, but it’s not the flashest — if you have time to sit down, then I would pick up a kebab and then go sit across the road and enjoy the pleasant environment of Aotea Square.

Pretty unimpressed with this place, I have to say. I thought this would be the perfect storm of kebab shops — a $ 5 lunch deal, and so better than Mid-City, and not hugely crowded, and so better than Kebab on Queen. But no. The reason Star has such cheap kebabs and so few customers is because their kebabs just aren’t that good. This was in all seriousness the smallest kebab I have ever bought. It was like a baby kebab, for babies. And before you start with your ‘oh it’s not size that matters, it’s what you do with it’ — no, when it comes to kebabs size it totally a factor. This is one respect in which kebabs and penises are not the same. Furthermore, they gave me completely wrong sauces, and although the guy wasn’t rude he certainly wasn’t friendly. In fairness the kebab tasted okay, but there was too little of it, and it tasted of sauces that I didn’t ask for. There are better $ 5 lunches in town.

When you think ‘eating in town,’ do you think ‘expensive?’ If so, you are surprisingly far off the mark. The area from the library across to the town hall and down to whitcoulls has a plethora of five dollar feeds — from kebabs, to curries, to waffles. Most people head straight to Kebabs on Queen, but not me — Star Kebab is the place for me. They have a far superior chilli sauce, you don’t have to sit surrounded by piles of cast off kebab containers, and there isn’t a huge line at 12 o clock every day. They also sell other meals then the afore mentioned five dollar kebab — but I’ve never found the strength to go past that
