After hearing such good reviews from my friends at school, I decided I’d try Toro Churro. I went there and decided to buy the basic $ 5 for 3 churros and dark chocolate/caramel dip. First of all, the lady wasn’t warm at all, didn’t greet me, say anything and told me to go sit next door, which was a different store(pieface) so I refused, since I figured it wouldn’t be ethical. Second, the lady didn’t give me the choice between caramel and chocolate dip as advertised. Third, the packaging of the churros didn’t have a lid, and it was outdoors and raining so it kind of ruined my experience– I ended up eating cold churros and cold thick chocolate dip… Good thing is, they are clean, and they have a good value(1 churro is pretty long so 3 for $ 5 is not too bad) and the taste of the dip was quite good. My friends said there were other employees that were warmer/kinder, and I think that the churros would’ve been much better if they were warm, but from my experience I’d give Toro Churros 2 stars…

Churros are one of those desserts that have to be done really well or not at all. There is not much you can do to mask the flavour of an old soggy churro; not even a fatal dose of nutella. The last time I had churros was in Spain and they were an eternal disappointment(just my luck) after that I was put off for life until I met Toro. Toro churro is a hole in a wall on Queen Street literally. I took the side line while my friend was ordering. There were regular churros covered with cinammon sugar, chocolate or caramel. Also filled churros with again chocolate and caramel. The lady serving us said to try the filled one with chocolate. I made an exception to have a bite because it smelt good. A minute later I stood in the line and ordered a caramel filled churro all for myself. It was worth every calorie and all the messiness that came with eating a fried something with a liquid centre. Having a particularly fat winter day my fomo kicked in and I ordered a plain churro to take home. It was nice but not as good as the filled ones. Chocolate won over caramel but both are worth it. Faith in churros restored.

I have always been a bit wary of eating churros outside of Spain/France, simply because I thought they would not live up to the«standard» of goodness I have been used to. Toro Churro proved me wrong! I am the traditional kind of girl when it comes to churros so I just go for the«original» ones simply served dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar with a little cup of hot chocolate on the side… One word: yum! I totally recommend this for a quick«cheer me up» on a cold afternoon!

My first try of a Churro was years ago when I backpacked through Brazil, and casually stopped on the street corner in Rio one hot day to sample a traditional sweet snack. It was my amazement to see Toro Churro one day as I milled about the Takapuna Markets. Although this stall is not Brazilian but Spanish, they still have the same amazing sweet desserts just as I had remembered, and was not let down by quantity and taste. I ordered the Jumbo Churro which is a large Churro that is filled with a delicious sweet chocolate or caramel sauce. If you have a sweet tooth like I do you will love this amazing treat, check the Churro crew out at one of their many locations around the city of sails. I have bumped into their mobile caravan at Takapuna Sunday markets and Thursday night markets. Gracias Toro Churro!

I first discovered Churros as a first year student at the UoA when they’d set up the churro van for the Thursday quad market. They are made by deep-frying dough that comes out of a mould thingy that spits them out in a nice crinkled stick shape. They are variously served with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and cinnamon, either drizzled/sprinkled over the top. You can get really fat Churros impregnated with the sauce(sorry, my inner Paul Henry had to say ‘impregnated’). Anyway, it’d be a weekly treat. Now they’re in more places, so yay! The van now stops at all the weekend night markets for example. But best of all, they now have a tiny but permanent presence in Queen Street right opposite Aotea Square — the perfect spot to take them to sit and enjoy while people-watching. The churro shop in Queen Street(along with its neighbours like Cali burrito) for me is emblematic of the shift towards quality micro-establishments in the CBD which is largely driven by the student population. The snobs hate it but I love it — makes for a wonderfully interesting city centre.

I have fond memories of sharing churros at Disneyland(where all your dreams come true). So when Toro Churro opened up on Queen St I was intrigued. For the unitiated, churros are similar in taste to a donut. I’ve tried their churros a couple of times now and both times have had to share the three pack(we got chocolate dipping sauce). They are pretty intense, so definitely a good thing to share. You can even get churros that have the filling inside them, which I imagine is on a whole other level! I’ve gotta hand it to Toro — their packaging is really well done, helping make them as least messy as possible. Toro Churro also have a food truck which I’ve seen parked up at the Silo Park outdoor cinema on Friday nights. I am intrigued by their hot chocolate flavours too, as when I last visited they weren’t all available that day.(If they do a mexican hot chocolate, I’m there)! Try some churros next time you’re in the city and after a sweet fix — maybe they’ll become your new favourite snack.

The first time I had a churro was at Disneyland three years ago. What an amazing thing it is! It’s like a crinkle cut doughnut that never got made into a loop. It’s coated in sugary goodness and it sure isn’t good for you. So it’s got to be delicious right? Yes indeed! This tiny little shop right at the top of Queen Street has filled a big gap in my university vicinity needs! Where there were no churros, now there are churros! I’ve never tried one of their jumbo churros as I’ve always found myself quite fulfilled by the regular ones. They really are an ultimate snack! That is if you aren’t going for a healthy type snack like an apple and more like diabetes in a snack food form!

Toro Churro is a fairly recent revelation in Auckland’s burgeoning take away dessert scene. And I’ll tell you what, it’s a blimmin’ great thing it decided to reveal itself. This microscopic shop(about the size of a walk in wardrobe) serves only one thing: Churros. Churros are a Spanish delicacy. Hot, deep fried bread sticks, coated in sugar and cinnamon. You get a little pack of about five churros and a wee pottle of chocolate sauce to dip them in. They’re delicious. There’s very little else to describe here. The price is good. Sometimes this place is busy and you have to wait for your churros. That’s it to be honest.
