A cute little bay on the western/city side of Devonport, Torpedo Bay is a nice alternative from some of the more popular beaches in the area, especially when trying to dodge the wind — if its windy on the east side Torpedo Bay is bound to be glassy. The beach itself is probably about 150 meters long and sits right at the end of King Edward Parade. A small bank of grass leads onto the white sand beach and when the tide is in it is actually a really nice place to go for a quiet swim. As it is tucked around the corner from North Head the water is usually very calm with the biggest waves generally riding off one of the Waiheke Quick Cats cruising through. Edged by large man-made breakwaters at either end of the beach it is a very secure place to swim, which is probably why so many families with young children frequent the spot. Its actually quite nice late in the afternoons in summer when lots of locals pop down for a swim after work or before dinnertime, really good vibe and so nice to see people enjoying the water while its warm! Try to stay away at low tide though as the further away from the beach you get the more unpleasant the ground becomes and you find yourself walking on oyster covered rocks and theres tons of them. There’s a shower at the end of the beach so you can wash all the salt and sand off before heading home.
