Best in town for pub quiz. Not to undermine the nice atmosphere for drinks and meals. Roomy enough for groups. But yeah, big fan of the weekly trivia nights.

Have avoided this bar for the last couple years due to the appalling service. However after venturing back in for a function discovered it was under new ownership and things were looking better. Will keep you posted

Went to Malt bar recently and got the platter(land) to share with my friend. Service was good, the guys are helpful. Food however… chicken wings on the platter were cold to touch(out of thefridge cold)…meatballs were super hard. the bread was prob our our fav bit on the platter which is a shame.

Some would say Malt is a past it’s heyday but I think as a neighbourhood local it’s a bit of alright. It has a great outdoor deck with plenty of seating and heaters, large and reasonably priced jugs, a legit quiz night and your typical pub fare(try the pizzas). The only thing that misses the mark for me is the staff. Perhaps, I caught them on a bad day but I found the staff to be surly and rather unhelpful, particularly when asking questions about the beer they have on offer, which is a great shame because they have several interesting options!

Malt Bar is worth it for their Tuesday night quiz alone. Go along with a bunch of buddies, buy a big ass jug of delicious dark Monteiths beer, order some chippies(ask for an extra tub of garlic mayo, because it’s the best), and get ready for the quiz of your life. A word of warning: their are two very hard out teams called«The Conquiztadors» and«The Quizmanauts» who usually dominate the quiz; so bring your ‘A game’. The wait staff are extremely friendly and it’s a really nice feeling to be in this place and sitting beside the fire once winter rolls around. Again, just want to reiterate how good«The Conquiztadors» and«The Quizmanauts» are. Seriously, they’re excellent. Gimme a shout if you need a ringer. My general knowledge is extremely high and I know a bunch of random music and movies stuff because I’m a super lonely loser and a bunch of sports crap because I used to live in Christchurch. I can help you win.

Over the years I’ve frequented Malt Bar more times than I care to count, and every time is a guaranteed good time. Located in Grey Lynn shops, it’s close enough to town to be a very cheap taxi ride and the perfect place to start a big night. However it’s also far enough out of the CBD to have plenty of street parking and is therefore a great place to meet for afternoon drinks and gossip sessions. Malt boasts a nice big outdoor area out the back of the building with a huge fireplace, heaters for those colder winter nights, and lots of seating. This area is ideal for catching up and drinking with large groups of friends, however the deck closes at ten pm due to noise control levels, so make the most of this lovely area earlier in the night! The food is great value too, with a good selection of tapas available, and I strongly recommend trying their fries — they’re amazing. A bowl of the thick cut, home style fries with aioli and an ice cold beer = an unbeatable combination.

Having lived round the corner from Malt for a while, this place became a regular spot for after work drinks or a quick catch up. It’s in a really handy location, it’s nicely set out with plenty of places to sit(indoor and out) and has a fire going when it gets chilly at night. The outdoor seating area is perfect because it’s closed in and feels nice and cosy, which is great because I hate sitting indoors in pubs, especially during summer. It’s pretty standard for pricing in central Auckland, for both drinks and bar food. Their hot chips are really yum too; a must-have with a nice cold beer.

I came here with some friends just after Xmas and we had a pleasant evening there. There’s some areas that are not overlooked which was nice as we had a lot of catching up to do. The food was excellent — I had a steak of some description and it was cooked to just how I like it. My friend got the fish and chips which was a big portion but the real star of the show was the fries — beautifully cooked fries that you simply couldn’t stop eating. We rounded off the night with a few montieths ciders and there was a good selection of beer on draught. The night we went was pretty quiet and you could not describe the bar as lively — then again it was just after xmas so a lot of people were probably still on holiday.

If you were to picture a modern day ‘local’ pub, this would be it. It’s got a great community feel about it and can fluctuate between being a lively bar to a nice place to spend a chilled out evening. My friends and I have come here for many birthdays where we didn’t want to make much of a fuss but still wanted to do something and it’s always the perfect venue. They stock Monteith’s and my favourite is definitely the Monteith’s Cider. Always goes down a treat. They have a great outdoor area out back that’s closed in with gas heaters, so even on a cold night you can enjoy yourself.

I like a bar where you don’t have to stand the whole time with a drink in hand, and when you do feel like sitting down, you can have a chat to the people sitting next to you or kick up your heels and dance the night away if the musician’s music tickles ya toes. Malt Bar after about nine pm most evenings especially Friday and Saturday is just that neighbourhood bar. Intimate seating inside, or if you need some fresh air you get the choice of the back deck for privacy. The service is great, very friendly too, and really tasty Montieth’s beer on tap to enjoy. The interior has a warm natural feel and is a relaxed, unpretentious place to hang out with friends, or that special someone.
