Hm, let’s see. What did I love about Blue? Well, everything really! They’ve got a huge juke box for a variety of old-school tunes, some delectable flavours of ice cream and frozen yoghurt, milkshakes, smoothies and basically everything you associate with summer time. I think they must look blue on a stormy day with next to no people visiting, but on the warm autumn day I was here, they had a booming business going down. I liked how they served ice cream in little recyclable containers if you’re not a fan of cones. I also liked how the staff were so super friendly and eager to please, despite the onslaught of peckish customers. If you’re ever passing through the township of Matakana, these guys are where you go for dessert.

I usually visit Blue when staying at the nearby Omaha beach. They do awesome smoothies — almost as good as the Okere Falls Store in Rotorua, with traditional fruit flavours which you can mix and match at your leisure, as well as a few more not so classical flavours. The toasted sandwiches are pretty good as well, with the same applying — mixing up flavours as you wish. Both are reasonably priced and a great seasonal — usually summer, snack. The store is usually jam-packed during the summer so consider yourself very lucky if you manage to grab a seat at one of the tables outside. Alternatively, you could just head back to the beach, which is probably the better option.

We made a stop in Matakana on the way back to Auckland from a day at Tawharanui beach, and boy am I glad we stopped at Blue. The ice-cream they serve is literally some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The coconut and marshmallow blended two of my favourite flavours together in one scoop of creamy perfection. I loved how the flavours were a bit out of the ordinary too. The banana-almond and black forest milkshakes were a welcome change to the usual chocolate, vanilla strawberry you see everywhere else and the strawberry and blueberry frozen yogurt cones were absolutely delicious. The staff looked absolutely rushed off of their feet when we went in there on a Sunday afternoon(I guess everyone had the same idea about a post-beach treat) but still offered really quick service with smiles on their faces. My only complaint is that there’s not a Blue in Auckland, I can’t wait any longer to have another scoop of marshmallow and coconut from here!
