In Vienna’s 5th district of Margareten which is perhaps also Vienna’s most culinary diverse district with up to 35 different national and regional cuisines represented, add another national cuisine to the list — Ukrainian. This past month a Ukrainian restaurant called Schinok opened its doors to the public. As it is on the same block as a very tasty Bulgarian restaurant and a good Vinothek, hopefully it will be noticed and be able to build up a clientele. The restaurant itself is very attractive with a cool post-industrial interior design. A Schanigarten allows sidewalk café dining in warmer weather. The staff are friendly and eager to please. But let’s get to the food! About I/3 of people judge a Ukrainian restaurant on its chicken dishes, another third on its blinis, and the final third on its Vareniki. I’m in the last third so for me the Vareniki are critical. Schinok easily passed the test with extremely delicate dumplings which were perfectly prepared and garnished. You have a nice choice of fillings and I enjoyed the potato and mushroom Vareniki as well as the calve’s liver dumplings. A smooth and summery Rivaner wine accompanied the meal. There are more variations of vareniki and pelmeni as well as other dishes I want to try here so I’m very glad that Schinok has opened in Vienna.
