The food in this Azorean restaurant located right in the center of Ponta Delgada is good. It specializes in Azorean fish dishes which is awesome, and it also has lots of traditional Portuguese dishes from the mainland. Aviao is open from morning to night and appeals to a wide variety of clientele — mostly locals but certainly some tourists as well. They do have a menu in English for those who need that. I ordered the Lapas Grelhada(Grilled Limpets) which were the highlight of the meal. Tender, juicy, and flavorful — all in one… and fresh out of the sea. For my main course I enjoyed another Azorean treat — Morcela Grelhada(Pan fried Blutwurst). It was very tasty … especially with the addition of a Piri Piri sauce. All this was accompanied by a regional Vinho Tinto(red wine). My major complaint here is that this is one of those«bait and charge» restaurants which I do find annoying. Many dishes are put in front of you which were not ordered but if you are tempted to try them, you pay for them. I know this trick after years of hanging in southern Europe but other tourists do not. Let me give you an example, I ordered a glass of wine but they brought a carafe so you will refill and get charged more. Besides the usual bread, I was presented with a cheese appetizer and later a large salad that I didn’t order. Just don’t eat of them and you won’t be charged. Some restaurants just do it this way, hoping to coax more money from unsuspecting diners. But fortunately the Lapas and Morcela were so tasty here, I’ll still assign four stars.
