Like Schwedentritt, this is a 5 – 10 minute walk from the Einsiedeln train station. Like Schwedentritt, it’s a mellow course with a bunch of loops(27 km total, in two big loops and one smaller one). One loop stays low, winding between houses and around a farm or two; the other climbs onto the upper plateau through some new construction, then through a farm area. There’s a bunch of road crossings on the lower loop — none busy(it feels like wandering through a subdivision, or set of ski condos), but enough to break up your feel. Schwedentritt’s mostly run through parks(feels more like skiing the perimeter of a golf course), which I prefer. For rentals, follow the river south from the train station to the first large trail map. Then follow the arrow to the right to the sport shop at Grotzenmühlestrasse 25. Rental gear was sub-optimal — I fell between two boot sizes in the Fischer boots here, leaving me the choice of ski-wandering looseness, or toe-crunching tightness.(I own Alpina gear, and can deal with Salomon or Atomic). The poles were some mid-90s Exel with a bone-jarring, blister-raising heel spur — I remember these, and not fondly. The skis were new, but possibly my least favorite model on the market today, the Fischer RCS Skating Vasa. I had a fine day skiing, but between the problematic rental gear and the road crossings, I’ll definitely mark it two stars lower than the Schwedentritt.
