Cádiz is the port Cristoforo Colombo aka Chris Columbus sailed from and discovered the Americas in 1492. it is also the oldest inhabited city in Spain and most ancient still standing in western europe(1000bc?). now all this history might drive some batty. me, i got hungry — for alfajores, a rolled moorish confection made with honey, almonds, hazelnuts, cinnamon and other spices that Gaditanos have been eating for hundreds of years. which pairs nicely with sherry, one of the worlds oldest wines(of course), made locally in Jerez since before the Romans(250bc-ish).
