Great location, especially if you’re visiting the Prague castle in the morning and want to grab lunch before you explore the rest of the area west of the river. Our GPS led us up a steep hill until we finally got here, but apparently there’s a much shorter way from the castle… Go figure… Once you come in, be forewarned that the entire environment is extremely dark. It’s almost how a house at night feels when there is no power and the only source you have is candlelight. If you’re jet lagged, order the coffee ASAP!!! Otherwise, you’ll be likely to fall asleep(as what happened to the two who didn’t get coffee in our group). The Vietnamese Iced Coffee is absolutely perfect for the summer. The food wasn’t anything super memorable, but still pretty good. I think we had the chicken with golden mushrooms and a vegetarian spring roll. However, the experience of dining here is extremely relaxing. It’s almost like a full body meditation but better — you get coffee and food! The environment might not be for everyone, but I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for lunch near the Prague Castle.

Ah, if only I knew how to read maps and understand what hills looked like on 2-D paper. It turns out the path we took to Maly Buddha took us up a pretttyyyyy steep, long hill that felt like it would never end. And it was hot. And we had dressed for autumn. I take that is a totally legitimate reason as to why I ordered the grilled pineapple and maple ice cream feast for lunch. Robyn very sensibly went for a thai tofu salad; but that grilled pineapple was all mine! A small door on a street with not much else on it opens up into a very dark, cave-like restaurant. So dark I could hardly see the tables up the back, but I could make out the candle-lit shadowy figures of many Buddhas at a very beautiful large altar at the back. And make out paintings of Buddhas on the walls. It almost felt holy. I’m not sure if it does have any spiritual /religious element here, or whether it’s simply a restaurant embracing its namesake. Either way, the menu offered up a nice alternative to the usual Prague readily-available Czech food, or burgers etc. All types of Asian food, many types of tea, and even Vietnamese coffee. It was hard to choose. Like I siad, I went for the grilled pineapple with the largest serving of maple ice cream I’ve ever seen; and I devoured it. The décor and ambiance is very distinct, so if you’re not a fan of dark, candle-lit places with a spiritual feel then you might turn your nose up at this«hippy» place. If you’re neutral, or indeed like Buddhas, then I think it’s a really lovely spot to come for something a bit different, in the very toursity Castle area of Praha.

If ever in Prague, this is a treat! There is a shrine for Buddha, and one feels they just stepped into a sanctuary when they eat here, forgetting it’s a restaurant. I eat here every time I’ve been to Prague. It’s a must visit!

Much vaunted and lorded in the guidebooks we were impressed with it when we made our lunchtime checkout and booked our evening table. We arrived and after a short period of being ignored we were shown to a squatting table right at the very back of the restaurant where we could not even see. So we were reseated. I have quite a discerning palate so chose a crab soup followed by some chicken. There was no crab in my crab soup. What there was was ribbons of crabstick in tepid dishwater. I should have walked then. The main course looked like prechewed meat in oxo. It tasted even worse. Absolute rubbish.

Maly Buddha is a wonderful little Asian restaurant with a relaxing and cosy interior which allows you to escape from the crowds of Prague castle around the corner. There are a wonderful selection of teas and the food although toned down somewhat for the tastebuds of the locals, still dishes up lovely pan-asian fare. Wonderfully warming vietnamese noodle soup dishes and the crispy springrolls makes for a reasonably cheap meal any time of day. The Czech president has also eaten here I’ve been told. The friendly owner Chris has painted much of the artwork in the restaurant and also has his own gallery. If you visit check out the painting of adam and eve on the toilet doors.
