It’s tough for me to only give two stars, but I have to. My boyfriend and I had a very yummy dinner of beef teriyaki, shrimp tempura rolls, and chicken teriyaki rolls, but unfortunately the entire meal we could hear CHOPCHOP. It was coming from the kitchen, and my boyfriend knew it was chickens being chopped up! Then when we couldn’t stand the chopping anymore, we tried to signal for the check. It took awhile and I think we were forgotten about several times. I can still hear the sound… eek.

So, the sushi really is good. So good that I’ve gone back four times. Unfortunately three of those four times they weren’t open even though it was 1.25 hours after they were supposed to be. Either change the opening hours or be ready to serve at 11am. Boo.

I walked into this place just wanting a seat at the bar and a drink with my friend. I asked some people outside the place leisurely smoking if the place was good and they were kind enough to say yes. The food may have been good, i’ll never know but their service is BAD! I waited 10 mins for a menu. at the bar. And to order we had to ask the 3 people in front of us in the sushi counter and they all said, «hold on a second.» They were all looking at a takeout slip and arguing with each other. After giving them another 10 mins, we just decided to leave. There were maybe 5 servers but the others couldnt care less for the bar. I guess you’ll have better luck sitting inside. If you want sushi, there are plenty of other places out there! Save your time and go elsewhere for a better experience!

This place is o-k-a-y. Food is average, price is average and everything is average. I prefer Bön Chon Chicken over Chuh Gat jib. I was there last weekened, I felt too old. Very young crowd… people were around 21? or even younger?(shhh… they often don’t check ID)

Average. But they deliver, so there’s a plus. The spicy tuna is overwhelmingly spicy, too much mayo on top and not enough tuna. The edamame is flavorless, virtually no salt on it. Meh. That’s really all there is to say. Also, as a side note, last night I discovered that on Foodler, this place is called Toro. I think the fact that no one seems to get the name right is a sign.

Friends and I(yes, we’re all Korean) call this place the«Korean chicken joint». Only good for two things: Chicken and beer. Ordering sushi is not even an option.(I was trying to find this place to review it, and surprised it’s called«Roppongi Sushi». Never knew by the large chicken sign out front!) I came here on a busy Friday night. It took FOREVER to get a table to accommodate our large group, but we had fun and enjoyed the laid back, loud, bar-restaurant atmosphere that is quintessentially Korean. This is just a place to go when you don’t feel like Sunset Grill all the time. We were led to the back room, which was dim-lit like a night club, seated alongside tables filled with rowdy Koreans, drinks slamming, munching down on hot, tasty fried chicken with side of pickled radish. We watched the wait staff running around trying to service everyone… else.(I guess we had to yell louder.) If you’re into more of the quiet scene, then you can choose to dine in the front area. The difference is night and day between the two sides of the restaurant. Expect crappy service when it’s crazy busy, but the spicy(yangyum) chicken is pretty good. I like it more than Privus’. I rate it 3, because of mediocre service. But seriously, I don’t come here for service but for chicken, yes. If a place has something I like, then I’ll still go. Chicken alone rates a strong 4. It’s just great for late night snacking & boozing.

Eh, portions have gotten smaller — but for everyone I think. I noticed most sushi places are victims of the current economy — and the slabs of fish on sashimi are almost see thru, But the place is TOO casual, kinda loud, not that remarkable in terms of food(but I really love sushi, so I thought it was okay). Try Minado in Natick.

If I could give this 3 ½ stars, I would. This is my «I don’t feel like cooking tonight» place, mostly for convenience’s sake rather than for the quality of the sushi, which is competent and standard rather than inspired.(Although they do have some fun special rolls, such as a shrimp tempura maki roll with eel sauce… definitely craveable.) I’ve only done takeout from Roppongi, but the atmosphere seems warm and pleasant, and the staff is usually friendly enough. If you want some nice value, though, hit this place at lunch. The $ 6.95 salmon or beef teriyaki lunch box will give you both lunch and dinner. As others have mentioned, the word«Roppongi» appears nowhere in signage… I only know it from seeing it on my credit card statements

What other sushi places in Boston advertise cajun chicken? Yeah. I should have known better. And I really wanted to like this place too. Everyone was SO nice but everything was just meh or bland. When ordering raw things, one would hope they taste like something. Nothing. Nada. :( The end.

Again, I live literally RIGHTACROSS from Sushi Roppongi, or, as it is more familiarly known as, SUSHI, because no where on their store front do they mention the word«roppongi», and it wasn’t until I snagged a take out menu that I found out that was their name. I’m definitely not a sushi expert, I only started eating it last year and I started out on super market sushi, which I continue to eat to this day. So my palate is pretty dim. Roppongi suits me just fine, it does sometimes take stupidly long for them to finish your order, even though its always empty. Like always. I usually get the fried sweet potato tempura and the Philadelphia with avocado, which sometimes is an easy enough substitution to order, and sometimes its like I’m asking them to pre-chew the sushi for me and haulk it up as if I were a baby bird. Either way, generally I enjoy both of these, the sweet potato especially is goes from pretty good to good, whereas the Philadelphia can be all over the place. There is better sushi out there for probably equally cheap rates. The only reason to go to sushi roppongi is if you live across the street and are lazy.

I’m a San Franciscan and was missing my Asian cuisine fix on the East Coast. Luckily, Roppongi(I found out that’s the name whilst writing my Unilocal review because my friends call it SUSHI — ala the huge sign out front) was a stone’s throw away. Spider roll: This place is part sushi restaurant, part Korean food. The oil in which the crab was deep fried definitely tasted like all the other Korean food(enormous quantities of chicken, spicy chicken etc.) that was fried in the same oil, potentially not even just that day. The end pieces where the highest concentration of deep fried wonderfulness and crab should have been were inedible as a result. Red Sox roll: In theory a good idea — unagi, tempura crumbles on top, avocado and cucumber if I remember correctly. In practice, not so hot. The tempura crumbles were cold and a little stale and adhered to the top of the roll with mayonnaise. I am vehemently opposed to mayonnaise and sushi ever coming in contact with one another FYI. Chirashi Deluxe: We wonder what the normal chirashi was like, since this was basically 6 pieces of varied sashimi on top of rice for $ 20. Interesting when the rest of the sushi is so cheap… Miso, edamame, sake, beer: Really hard to mess this up and they didn’t. The lowdown: Like somebody else said, it’s a step above supermarket sushi and it’s relatively cheap(in comparison to San Francisco sushi anyway.). If they eliminated the gross oil and the mayonnaise, they’d probably get two more stars.

When you walk into a place and you see big, poster-sized pictures of three versions of a dish, commit to yourself that you’re going to heed that not-so subliminal message and order that. Sooo, when my brother suggested spicy Korean fried chicken on these signs, all I could do was feel my mouth watering! We ordered the spiciness version along with a few rolls of sushi. While we waited, we were waited upon by a very gracious, courteous and kind staff. The chicken arrived, and I kid you not, it was a whole chicken! We dug in and despite our watering, our mouths couldn’t stop munching and hands couldn’t stop reaching for that chicken. The staff kindly helped us on our way by refilling our water glasses. The sushi wasn’t anything to write home about, but I will tell you that I saw the chef walking our freshly fried tempura-crusted shrimpies and crabs to their sushi bar– that deserves props for freshness. The chicken has me hooked. I think we’re going to come back, order us another chicken and hit the back room for some karaōke. Don’t mistake Roppongi for just another generic Allston Asian joint, it’s got spunk!

Got booted off the B-line at Harvard St. last night(after sitting on the stupid train for a stupid hour 100 feet from the station where the stupid conductor wouldn’t open the stupid doors to let us out and stop wasting my very important and precious time). I decided to grab some sushi while I was waiting for the train to start running again, so popped into this place. There were roughly two other tables occupied, and as far as I could tell a full wait staff present. Like, more waiters/chefs than patrons. I ordered from the sushi bar(miso soup, hot sake, a dozen pieces of nigiri sushi), killed the miso in about a minute, the sake in about a minute-and-a-half, and then waited roughly thirty minutes for my sushi. Then, half of the order arrived. I killed that in about three minutes, and waited another twenty-minutes for the rest of my order(I may have had another bottle of sake too, cause why not, but I had to stand up and go find my server to get it). Then I waited another fifteen minutes for my check. The sushi was fine, not special but certainly not bad. The hot sake was hot sake(I love that shit, love love love it), the miso soup was standard. Prices were also reasonable. I’d have probably given it four stars but for the slow service. But the service was way slow. Pleasant, but slow. So three stars it is.

An average sushi place at best. So average that nothing about the sushi stands out from my dining experience here. I decided to check this place out with my gf after walking by it day after day on my way to the T. The décor and ambiance of the place was alright. Drunkards singing karaōke in the back room made for a less than pleasurable experience. But hey, you can’t expect anything less from a Friday night in Allston. The seating in the front room was kinda weird. We were sandwiched between two other tables but were separated by some type of drapery. Cool looking idea, but not too private or comfortable. We ordered a sushi combo and some shrimp tempura, neither were good/bad enough to talk about. The prices were pretty cheap so I couldn’t complain. I’d put this place probably on par with kayuga down the street but it def can’t hold its own against the sushi places closer to Coolidge Corner. If I don’t feel like walking too far, spending too much, or am in a rush, this place ain’t a bad idea.

This place is cute, tasty and really close to my apartment. All things I like. They have hanging screens between the tables in the front. It could be too close for comfort, but isn’t for that reason. Though the servers are never quite as busy as they should be to give you the right balance of attentiveness and privacy, they are very nice and mean well. The sushi is average, the rice bowls are very good. The first time I ate here, I had the teriyaki beef and tempura shrimp. Such a great decision. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend this place, but am glad it’s a short walk away.

Just average. Slightly better than supermarket sushi but nowhere near other sushi places in town(Privus, Shino, Sushi Express, other sushi joints down Harvard Ave towards Coolidge Corner… etc). I used to live a block away so I was drawn by the inexpensiveness. Well, you get what you pay for here, maybe even less! Nigiri $ 1.50 to 2 something a piece, rolls starting at around $ 5. The nigiri pieces are so sinewy that I nearly gagged the last time I ate it. It must be the cut or just the quality of the fish, I don’t know. The eel pieces had bones in it. I’ve been here probably 4 or 5 times so this review certainly is not based on just one bad experience(hate it when reviewers do that!). Why do I keep going back? Convenience… but now that Privus is up, never again… Oh, not to mention I have called in twice on Saturdays around noon, hungering for some takeout to cure an aching hangover… only to find out Roppongi randomly will not be open that day until dinner. Wha!?!

When my sushi craving hits, it hits hard. So I ride that wave over to Roppongi. Mainly because it seems to be the only true Japanese restaurant in the area that I can find. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Tibetan, Malaysian eateries in Allston, but when I want sushi I like to go to an establishment that is just Japanese food. That said, this place is pretty good. The sushi is fresh, but not as fresh as some of my other favorites like Umi or Symphony, but the prices are VERY reasonable. My only gripe with the sushi is that the spicy tuna roll had cucumber in it and is not all that spicy(its very similar to Shino sushi). My roommate on the other hand loooved the veggies in her roll so its really a matter of preference! The avocado salad was delicious(I was craving omega-13s) and the miso was perfect. Also they have a very large beer and wine selection although I was a bit horrified to see they had Sam Summer in their case in January, so who knows how long those bottles have been sitting there! I would say that in terms of price and quality this place is very similar to Shino, I have yet to try anything other than sushi here though. The staff is friendly and attentive and the service is lightning fast. If you are in Allston, Roppongi will satisfy your immediate sushi needs!

In case you haven’t received the memo, there’s a new Japanese Sushi joint in the heart of Allston Village. Despite the use of the words Allston and Sushi in the same sentence, please read on, there’s a chance you may be persuaded. I was. Roppongi Sushi is located near the intersection of Harvard Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue, only a hop-skip– and an unsecured Wi-Fi connection to Bagel Rising. I enjoyed the tuna sashimi and the unagi nigiri. One negative, or positive, depending on your preference, was size. They came a bit smaller than I remember from say Fugakyu, Tsunami, Mr. Sushi, Shino Express, or Ginza. But, again, depending on your preference you might appreciate the smaller pieces; I think I remember a Talk thread written by Steve N. dedicated to this topic. The miso held a nice consistency and the tofu was choice. Minus one star for small sashimi and nigiri. They serve a $ 6.95 lunch box that gives you the main course choice of salmon, chicken, spicy tuna or salmon maki. Accompanying this you’ll get a sesame green salad, vinaigrette vegetables, avocado/cucumber maki, two small fried dumplings and white sticky rice. The beef bulgogi plate was lean and spiced to perfection. These alone are worth five stars. Another negative, although Unilocalers have told me I’m out of touch, was the price of a 22oz Sapporo, $ 9.95. Minus one star. Roppongi was clean and the staff provided fast and polite service. Also, they have a kick ass karaōke set-up if you’re into that type of thing.
