As a former cyclist getting back into the game I needed to get my bike back into rideable shape. I had lent it to a friend and it was in disrepair. I called around to a few bike shops in the central Austin area and Castle Hill seemed to offer the most work for their«tune up». Some bike shops had«tune ups» that consisted of ‘inspecting’ items and then charging more to fix them. Yes — some bike shops charge you to *look* at your bike. Gordon(the mechanic) was friendly and helpful from the beginning. When I brought my bike in they didn’t make any jokes about its current state. My bike was a fraction of the price of most of the bikes in their shop but they never cracked wise and gave me and my bike 100% respect. Gordon ended up replacing the chain at a very reasonable $ 27 installed and did a great job on the tuneup. When I took the bike for a ride leaving the shop I could tell she was back up to par. I have since put a few miles on her and the tune up has been a great buy. I can’t recommend them enough. They did a great job and were totally professional and were courteous and as a side note — they even remembered my name when I came in to pick up my bike. That might not sound like much, but to me it was a great sign of customer service. If you have a bike that’s having trouble shifting or maybe needs a little TLC I can’t recommend these guys enough.

One of the best experiences I have had with a bike shop. I dropped by with an improperly installed bottom bracket(by me) and asked for some help installing the parts properly. Gordon, the Service Manager of the shop, carved out some time and corrected the repair, rebuilt my Campy shifter and tuned the derailleurs. The bike shifts like a dream. All is well and I was back on the bike in hours! Pros: — Absolutely the best bike mechanic in Austin. Fast and affordable. And your bike will work perfectly. — The best selection of Pinarellos — go by and check them out. Rocket ships! — Located near downtown on Lamar — They are serious about bike fit and performance. Start with these guys and you will love biking for life. Cons: — Not open on weekends — It is worth your time to make an appt to see these guys. — I wish I could convince my wife that I really need another bike. They have a sweet steel single speed…

As someone who has busted about a half-dozen inner tubes this year(and consequently been to Castle Hill Cycles as many times) I feel pretty well acquainted with this shop. Here’s why I like this place so much: 1) Prices for repairs are reasonable. I just had a new tube and tire put on for ~$ 35 parts and labor… you can check out the service menu on their website. 2) Service is thorough. I watched Gordon(who does most of the repairs) do the above tube and tire installation. Even though it was on my front wheel, I noticed him tightening up the spokes on the back before giving it back to me 3) Gordon and Tyler(who sells bikes) are stand-up guys. See above. On the same visit, I overheard Tyler counseling a young guy who walked in off the street looking for a bike on what type of bike would suit him best(one that they didn’t sell btw), where to find it, and how much it should cost him. I never worry about being sold something I don’t need, or not getting my money’s worth. 4) No bike snobbery. This place sells really expensive road bikes, and when I bring my $ 100 flea market bike in for an $ 8 repair I get nothing but niceness from the guys in the shop. I stopped in the first time out of convenience, but I’d go out of my way to bring my bike here. Next time I need a tuneup, this is definitely where I’ll be taking my beloved but not so fancy 2 wheeler.

Great selection of parts and Pinarello bicycles. Gordon and Jim are skilled mechanics and are very trustworthy in figuring out what your needs are – this ain’t no car repair shop with unexpected costs. Fast turnaround and good attention to detail. Convenient downtown location, too. Be sure to grab lunch at the Food 4 Fitness café on your way out… yum. Pinarello bicycles are super nice machines. If you’re considering a Trek, Felt, Specialized, Gary Fisher, or any other road bike, come test ride a Pinarello. They are the Ducati of bicycles.
