Zig Zag Salon

I have tried to find a good place to cut and get blue streaks for over 2 years but never managed. Either the cut was not cut enough (just «shaped up») or the streaks were nowhere close to what I had asked, despite me interrupting as soon as I saw it was not what I wanted, or the blue was not blue but teal, etc… Then I walked into zig zag with no appointment, talked with René, and she gave it a try. She was great! She truly listened and did everything right in a matter-​of-​fact way. Swiftly and right. She managed to do cut, bleach, and blue in 1.5 hours, which is great since every other place has always taken way way way more time. I think I finally found my place!!!

This is the worst salon I know. They cut the hair of my husband and it was totally terrible, not professionally, rediculus. I would like to send a picture, but cannot. Now my husband really has a problem, it will take maybe 2 – 3 month to repair his hairstyle. It was the worst hairstyle experience in our life. I just wonder how the hairdressers like that one have the right to work in the salons.

I’ve been going to the same hair stylist in Houston for years but after I decided to live in Austin longterm, I decided to venture out to local hair salons. Zig Zag caught my attention because it was close to my apartment and had decent pricing, great Unilocal reviews, and a parking lot.
I went in there completely new and a bit scared I might add because like I’ve said, I have been going to the same lady for years (I want to say about 8 years…). My stylist was Lola and she was so friendly. I needed a trim and a little bit of relayering. I was very pleased with my cut. Also, before going in there, my hair was a little dry from the recent home-​done purple dye job I did, but walking out, my hair was feeling super soft, light, and fresh.
I will definitely be back :)

Lola (Lauren) has been doing my hair for many years. I keep going back because she is excellent! Highly recommend her!

After seeing the good reviews on Unilocal,I wanted to check this place out. I saw Renee, who did an excellent job. I wanted natural looking highlights, and they look amazing. When she first did them, they were a bit too bright, but she immediately offered to put a darker toner in my hair, even before me asking. I am so happy with the results and everyone was so sweet there.
The salon was easy to find, parking was abundant on a Saturday afternoon, and the prices were great! Would highly recommend.

Freida & the rest of the zig zag crew are all amazing. They have been doing my hair for many years & I have always been completely happy with my results. Very laid back atmosphere… Very Austin. You will not be disappointed.

This is my special place where I go to get rejuvenated and I always feel beautiful when I leave. Lola is my stylist and she has never let me down. She is honest and talks with me each visit to find out what I’m thinking I’d like to do with my color and cut. Lola is amazing with color! I do not live close to the salon and literally half my neighborhood goes to Zig Zag. It is a fun place. Everyone at the salon is upbeat and we have some great conversations and giggles. It is a family atmosphere and you will feel like you are a part of the family once you have been in to see them one time. I have been going to Lola for over a year and there is no way I’d go anywhere else! I have no reservations recommending Zig Zag. They are all wonderful. I’m a bit partial to my Lola because she is just all that and then some! I am one picky gal and Zig Zag is the best ever!

I’ve been to Zig Zag twice in the last couple of months. Renee has taken my hair and especially my color and revived my style! She did a fabulous & fantastic job with my hair! Freida did my eyebrow shaping and my eyebrows have never looked better! Thank you, thank you, thank you ladies for taking a gal out of the old and into the new!

Our family loves coming to ZigZag Salon, they have been doing my hair and my children’s hair for over 10 years. Frieda and Lauren are amazing with color, and I am incredibly picky! My daughter that’s in college loves them cutting and coloring her hair as well. The kids and my husband go to Carlos and love their cuts. Just a great atmosphere. Would highly recommend ZigZag to everyone :)

The Zig Zag family is amazing! Frieda has done my hair for over 10 years and has always done what works for my style and personality — even when I ask for something new. She knows how to read my hair and do subtle things with color that make my hair just right. I feel like a Pinterest picture!

I’m a very picky person when it comes to this huge amount of hair on my head! I was terrified to do anything to my hair because a pervious salon ruined my hair and took about 9 inches off without telling me first. So, I developed hair trust issues.
Since day one Drea (the stylist to ask for) has been ON POINT! She is always so invovled and kind, granted she does liquor me up on occasion. YES They provide that kinda stuff cause they love us.

I have extremely thick dark hair. Ive gone in there a billion times with one extreme hair color to the next! From black hair, to red, to purple, to ombré gray, to blonde. My hair has little damage from all the bleaching.
I’m not sure how she does it but she does! She keeps me and my hair happy. On top of all that she doesn’t complain about how heavy and time consuming my hair is and takes!
Im obsessed with these Hair Ninjas and recommend them to everyone who stops me and says «your hair looks great!» I even had an old lady in walmart stop to complement my purple hair hahhaa.
I love this place. If you want unicorn hair or just a slight change in color ZigZag is the place and drea is the one to ask for!

I have so many friends who have been going to the same hair stylist for years but are always wishing for more. I have been with Zig Zag 2003 and I have never felt that way. As I get older, I need more help with staying age appropriate but still hip. There is a down to earth yet chic vibe at Zig Zag. My friends and family have sat in almost everyone’s chair and they all feel the same way. An added bonus is that we are supporting a local, independent, (amazing) business woman– Frieda rocks!

This place is amazing! Freida has been doing my hair for almost 2 years and I wouldn’t go anywhere else, she has magic in those little hands of hers! All the people that work there are friendly and Zig zags defiantly Keeps Austin Weird! Love love love this place!

My best friend and I have been going to Zig Zag Salon for over 12 years. It is our girl’s day with our girls (and Carlos!). Freida has been my stylist from day one (she is also the owner). Love, love, love her to pieces! All of the stylists are AH-​MAZING! The salon itself is cozy and chic… my home away from home. The best of the best, unlike no other!

I have gotten my hair cut at Zigzag since 2002. I always go to Jess because she is awesome/​hilarious/​therapeutic/​a superstar and she gives me an awesome cut every time. I know the other ladies do fantastic work and are also great to be around. Getting my hair cut here is always such a fun experience.
Even when I lived in Boston and now that I live in New Orleans I still wait for visits to Austin so Jess can work her magic.
Specifically: she is honest. If I go to her with a picture of a pixie cut that looks adorable on this head of fine blonde hair she will be straight with me and let me know that will never end up looking like that with my thick, textured, brown hair. Instead she’ll suggest something different but similar and it will look better than what I initially wanted. The true testament to her cuts is the way it grows out. For two months I’ll have this beautiful, evolving head of hair. I have ended up referring most of my friends and a ton of strangers to Jess because of the cuts she’s given me. Also, Jess takes my lifestyle (no blow drying, no products, no brushing) into account and works her magic accordingly. I love that she gives me something that will work for me and always makes me feel beautiful when I leave her chair.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a new stylist in Austin go to Zigzag. You’ll love the atmosphere! And if you get Jess tell her Ali sent you!

I cannot give Freida and her team enough positive reviews. I absolutely loved them! Freida made me feel glamorous — just what I needed for my wedding day!
We reserved the salon from 9−12pm. Freida had enough staff come in ON TIME for 9 ladies. Every hair style was modern and very stylish. We brought in Starbucks and tacos for everyone to snack on. We also had music playing and really enjoyed each others company.
Freida is the most friendly, fun spirited, and easy going stylist I know. I changed my up-​do from when we first had our consultation and she was super cool about it — no worries type of gal! She also styled my mother-in-law’s hair (who is rather picky) and she loved her hair.
I only wish we lived in Austin so Freida could be my full-​time stylist!

I booked an appointment with Lola back in December, and she did an amazing job on my hair. I ended up with the cutest haircut, and loved the way she styled it. The salon is adorable — I like the colors and decorations, and the ladies who work there are a blast. I need to get my hair cut and colored again, so I know where I’ll be going!

Three cheers for Katie at Zig Zag! I work at Fit & Finish — a women’s focused skincare and fitness studio — and we had a big photo shoot set up for our website launch. I was insanely nervous as I’m not a huge fan of getting my picture taken and generally hate how I look in photos. My boss set us up with Katie for hair and makeup which made it seem like a super big deal.
Katie is such a sweetheart! She instantly made me feel comfortable, and encouraged me to have fun with the whole thing. My boss entrusted Katie to just «do her thing» and the results were perfect! All our hair and makeup matched our personalities and what we do at the gym. Meaning, our yoga instructor had a very soft feminine (but practical) hairstyle and gentle makeup, my hair and makeup was a little more flirty and bold (I coach CrossFit).
Katie does makeup for weddings and other special events and I would definitely trust her skills again. But most of all I’m looking forward to returning to have her do a cut and color; she seemed to grasp the kind of girl I was was (no fuss, no muss, but spunky damnit!) and seemed excited about what she could do with my hair.
Note this salon has parking and offers complimentary beverages — always a bonus — the music is upbeat, and the staff was friendly and created a fun vibe.
