(Review is for Jazzman on Francis inside of Brigham & Women’s) Hispanic girls behind counter, when you are done serving customers, stop talking about them in Spanish. Yes that’s right just because I’m white doesn’t mean I don’t habla. Get out of the Barrio b’&tches. And another thing, could you clean a table once in a while? I hate sitting to a table that’s sticky or dirty. I’ve been here several times, and there are milk stains here from the Tea Party. You get a star auto for nothing, I’ll give u 2nd for the good coffe. But seriously, if your gonna be lazy or ignorant, go into politics

One star only for the lady working there who needs a lesson in customer service. I walked in hoping to read a few pages of my book.. But an annoying radio ad was playing loudly. I asked her if it wasn’t a bit too loud and she replied, this is a café, not a library. Because she was smiling, it took a moment for her rudeness to sink in. Reading was just what I wanted to do! I sat down, held up my book and said, see, I’m going to read now.. For me a café IS a little like a library! She said, you can do whatever you want, read, dance, sing.. I said yes, but the loud radio is distracting. «Maybe you should pick another place,» she answered. Next time and every time, I will.

Good coffee when in need and can’t leave the Karp building. They offer genuine service and friendliness. Appreciate that smile when having a tough day. Fresh baked pastry and other goodies.

I work in the Karp building and I have been completely spoiled by Veronica’s delicious coffee. There isn’t a huge selection here, and it’s all taken from across the street at the Children’s Cafeteria, but there is a Children’s hospital employee discount so everything is pretty cheap. And Veronica, the woman who is usually running the place, is super nice and friendly.

Sometimes I get to work really early. On days like that, I often walk around downtown/Chinatown aimlessly looking at the hulking awesomeness that collectively makes our skyline. Today was one of those days. Walking back from the Waterfront area, I happened upon Jazzman’s — a little café inside the State Street Bank building. I decided to poke in. When I entered, I couldn’t not notice how the interior was set up to look like a chain coffee shop, despite it’s not being a chain coffee shop. As I took the cookie cutter layout in, some lady’s voice registered in my brain, advising me to be careful, as I was standing in a puddle created by a leaking refrigerator filled with San Pellegrino. After shaking my New Balances off, I approached the counter, where an affable middle aged lady sold me a coffee and cherry turnover. She gave me a bag and an empty cup. Apparently, the responsibility of getting coffee in there fell on me. I found the manual-pump coffee distributors to my left, and noted the four different flavored coffees before finally coming to one that claimed to taste like coffee exclusively. Pump number one revealed a very light liquid that got darker only as the cup filled more. It was like pond water — black in it’s depth, but in the palm of your hand, more like dirty tap water. The taste of the coffee is hard to explain. «It was like nothing I’ve ever tasted» doesn’t necessarily do it justice, because it was more likely something I had tasted and had since chosen to forget. Like beets. I don’t hate beets. I just don’t remember what they taste like, and have no plans to jog the old memory. One star was awarded above the minimum because of the turnover. It was pretty big and pretty tasty. This is not a «turnover lovers leave work early to capitalize on this excellent turnover opportunity» situation, so much as it was a «this isn’t terrible like most things downtown are terrible» affair. All in all, Jazzman’s gets a pass from me, though if I worked for State Street, I might go there if it were raining. Locusts. Or hell fire. Normal rain would more likely prompt me to just go a block up the road to Boston Common Coffee or something.

This little gem is often overlooked — hidden in the lobby of the Karp Building. Jazzman’s is operated by Children’s Hospital and offers a discount to CHB employees. The Café is outside of security and open to the public. They have fresh baked goods, espresso, and smoothies. The also have a cooler with sandwiches, yogurt, and other snacks. They offer catering at very reasonable prices. The staff is always pleasant and friendly.
