Yes, the meat is totally avoidable. And the produce is somewhat avoidable, though it varies. Fruits generally seem better than the vegs, and it goes almost without saying that something like kale, though the darling of the moment among hipsters and trendy yuppies, probably isn’t your best bet at a place like this.(lol) Produce prices are average. Dairy and eggs are fine. They do, however, have an extensive selection of Pakistani/South Asian pantry staples, and a good-to-very good selection of basic Latin American pantry goods, at good prices. In particular, they have a truly amazing variety of Goya beans, not usually carried by any single store, both dried and canned, in addition to the full range of typical South Asian legumes.

I have shopped here for many years when I used to live in brooklyn. It was common grounds for all shoppers. no matter the race from one end of the block and the other end. I was able to find everything I wanted at this location whenever I went. I was happy with the service & their capability of having almost everything in stock. The prices were average and the quality was also average. But they had a parking space and I live it! Usually there very hard time looking for parking no matter the time you went there!

I came here despite the warnings. I expected the worst, and got exactly what I expected. As a vegetarian, I skipped the meat aisle and went straight to the vegetables. The first item I looked at was the carrots, which looked okay; followed by the kale. It went downhill from the kale. I perused the bunches and got as far as sacking one or two bunches(at 1.50/lb it was a good deal) until I realized they ALL had hair growing on them in different places(see the picture I took.) I immediately tossed it back and figured I would check other produce I wanted, off to the beets. I saw a sign that read«fresh beets», which sounded good. The kind with the leaves attached to the beet root(the round part.) The roots were soggy and obviously rancid, the leaves were black in most areas and had holes from insects eating thru them. I immediately doused myself with Purell and vowed never to return. Be warned.

Boxed foods, canned foods, spices of many variety… those are great. The breads are OK — usually hardened. I am rating this place based on what I eat and what I can and cannot buy here. They should really take the«Fruit & Veg» out of the name. The fruits and vegetables are almost always spoiled and the meat section smells RANCID — like rotted chicken. Yes, even inhaling the putrid scent was not enough to deter me from getting chicken here once. I thought«ok maybe they dropped juices and dont clean the floor well — maybe the chicken is OK.» With so many meatless places in my neighborhood, I was desperate for meat! Once is enough — all chicken ended up in the garbage. I am really lucky I didn’t get sick. I couldnt get that smell out of my kitchen for nearly a month. It lingered and made me angry — it pissed me off SO much. I tried to give this place a chance SO many times — I went there so often that they started to know me and even knew when I changed my hair, etc. One guy says«oh heeey we haven’t seen you here in a while.» :\(that’s not MY fault) I now take a bus to ShopRite on Ave I and pay for a $ 10 cab home to Ave H. It’s worth it if Eastern is the only other option nearby.
