First of all the prices on their website are outdated. For instance: a spicy tuna roll is listed for $ 5:50 but the bill said $ 7:50. Miso soup is $ 6 but it was over salted and the tofu tasted bland. Sushi had that fishy after taste. Maguro avocado was the only delicious plate out of our entire order. For 3 appetizers 3 sushi and 2 sashimi plus miso soup the bill was $ 83 which i wouldn’t complain about if the quality would be of the same level. I guess we should have opted for Omakase instead of a la carte. I don’t like to post reviews like this but i was very disappointed when i had this dinner with my date.

Once in a great while, the mood might strike you to opt for high-end, dine-in sushi rather than Seamless sushi on your sofa. Even with delivery, sushi can be a Treat Yo Self affair, as it’s virtually effortless to hit $ 20 per person per order. But leaving your apartment? Dressed in something better than sweats? Throwing down a bit more dough for a chef to serve you single slices of the day’s freshest fish out in a public setting? That’s the real Treat Yo Self sushi spirit. Hey, that’s just some fancy shit. Seeing as 7th Ave. is already lined with standard issue, raw fish, take-out spots, the high-end Sushi Katsuei hitting Park Slope seems long overdue. A trip to Manhattan is no longer needed to enjoy delicious Omakase, which is 100% what you should order when you come here. At $ 45, it’s a fraction of what you’d pay for the chef’s special tasting menu at some chichi spot across the East River, without the proportionate dip in quality. While the line-up will certainly change depending on what day you come in and what fish the chef wants to prepare for you, here was ours: Mackerel Fatty Tuna Red Snapper Spanish Mackerel Salmon Belly Yellowtail Uni Bluefin Tuna Squid I would say the winners of each round, respectively, were the Red Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, and Squid, three pieces of seafood not typically in my sushi order. The Salmon Belly deserves a shout-out as well, despite it not being my favorite fish, as it was definitely the most melt-in-your-mouth of the bunch. We felt like we had just a bit more room in the gut for some more, so we went for a bonus round, which was a MP affair and netted out to about $ 15 – 20 more, before closing out with the hand roll finale: Fresh Mackerel Needlefish Kampachi Fatty Tuna Scallion(Hand Roll) Overall, this was a delicious Omakase, and the chef was super accommodating to a table with a soy allergy(not me, please) in a restaurant where soy is pretty prevalent. As for the level of freshness and quality, I’ve had a bit better in Manhattan, I won’t lie, but at an exorbitantly bigger hit to the wallet. Pound for pound the price point here at Sushi Katsuei makes it one of the best deals in the city of its kind, even with that extra round we ordered. Next up could be their Sushi & Sashimi Omakase at $ 65, as a return visit here is pretty much a given. I will say, that while I understand the minimalist, Japanese décor going on here, the closed-in back patio where we were seated didn’t exactly match the high-end vibe. It’s drafty and garage-y. Still, that’s about the worst you can say about this place, and should by no means keep you away. And again, let’s remember, the alternative would be my couch, which God help me if I saw someone reviewing that saggy piece of IKEA craftsmanship. What I guess I’m trying to say is, even if you can’t Treat Yo Self to a nice sofa, you can still Treat Yo Self to some Sushi Katsuei.

Honestly worst experience in a restaurant I’ve had in a long time. With their prices you would expect more than the absolutely mediocre food that we received. Im not sure what was wrong with our waiter but he couldn’t seem to get anything right. I placed my order and he asked me is this enough for you which was confusing and also offensive. Don’t get me started with the dilemma that was trying to pay between 4 people. I don’t think I will ever come back to this place not to mention the mildly toxic and uptight atmosphere of this restaurant.

I came here with my boyfriend after a very busy New Year’s Eve workday and decided to grab something nice before the end of the year in a few hours, I was lucky to get a table at 9pm as I called around 8pm, the hostess got my name confused with another guest’s, so it took a few extra minutes to seat us, but it was ok. We were seated in the patio area(I suppose in the summer time it’s in the open while in the winter it’s closed), it was a bit awkward as they put portable heaters there next to a few tables. I over heard another guest asking his date is she wanted to be seated next to the heater. I waited for more than 10 mins for my hot tea to arrive, and nobody bothered to come up to greet us while we studied the menu. My boyfriend was not very happy throughout the meal because each other we had to request for table service, otherwise no one would come to take orders or offer us anything to eat or drink. We ordered an omakase, tempura jumbo shrimps(which were not jumbo at all), seaweed salad, uni sushi, ikura sushi, otoro sushi. Everything came out alright, in fact pretty good for an authentic Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn, it’s just that the servers gave a very strange vibe and we were not taken care of like I’d expected. The sushi was ok but the sashimi was pretty good. The $ 11/pc toro was delish, I’ve had better and more expensive otoro but this justified the price, my boyfriend thought it was just mediocre though. I thought I might be back again as soon as I entered the dining room, but after spending two hours there I didn’t think it was very welcoming. I’d still encourage sushi lovers to try it though.

My husband treated me to a nice date at Sushi Katsuei, reportedly one of the best sushi places in Brooklyn. The location in Park Slope is a short walk away from Prospect Park and the neighborhood is pretty — some nice date night strolling! The outside of Sushi Katsuei is rather non-descript — if it wasn’t for the line of people starting to form, we might have missed it. That said, the inside is bright, clean, modern, and nice. It is fairly casual, down to earth, and approachable, so easy for you to bring kids or guests and make everyone feel comfortable. However, its not romantic or intimate, so would be a hard sell if you’re looking at Sushi Katsuei for a special meal. The staff take pains to make the experience good, from keeping tabs on reservations and waits, to having dedicated servers who are experts on the menus and cuts of fish. Note that there is not a lot of space inside to wait for a table, so I would recommend reservations especially for the winter. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation in a quiet corner. We were promptly given a towel to clean our hands, menus, and cool water. From there, we had a server visit us every ten minutes to deliver and announce a new plate, clear the old plates, refill tea, and check in. We ordered the $ 65 omakase, which is a really good deal if you’re into sushi. The $ 65 set comes with both sushi and sashimi, served to you two to four pieces at a time. I also ordered a Hijiki(seaweed) salad. In the spirit of keeping date night, I chose not to keep notes about the meal. In general, the sushi was top notch, very fresh, a good sized portion, and well presented with contrasting flavors or sauces to amplify the fish’s natural qualities. I guess we had about 12 – 16 pieces of sushi or sashimi, and a hand roll to end. I noticed that at the halfway point, we began to see some repeat fishes served slightly differently. One particular fish came to us four times dressed differently. While the quality of fish and the price point are excellent, the repetitiveness of what should be the chef’s selection of the best cuts made me wonder how diverse the week’s offerings were. In addition, the majority of tables around us were ordering and eating gigantic plates of sushi rolls, complete with spicy mayo. I’m willing to give Sushi Katsuei another try. For now, I know that they’re happy to give you basic Americanized sushi and are capable of giving you really great high quality sushi. If you’re very snobby, perhaps call ahead to ask what they have in stock for the evening before you make a reservation!

My husband to be and I just polished off an amazing meal from here tonight. We checked in around 6 and I’m glad we did since the place nearly completely filled up right at 7. We ordered: snow pea salad–(nice, but probably wouldn’t order again); shrimp shumai(really good); the scallop roll(sooo good); the 9 piece omikase sushi(an absolute must); 210 oz. carafes of their sake of the month; hot green tea(yuuup, best green tea I’ve ever had out) and mochi ice cream(I’d probably skip this next time). Service and atmosphere was spot on. A terrific date spot for sure. We’ll be back!

Before we left, the waiter who seated us asked if it was above, below, or met expectations. For me, it met expectations. I expected it to be good and it was good. The staff is wonderful and as polite as you can expect from a Japanese establishment. I ordered the $ 65 sashimi and sushi omakase. The $ 45 sushi omakase probably wouldn’t have filled me up. Raw Pacific Oyster with Ponzu Spicy Monkfish with Wasabi — mellower, which usually tastes like Taiwanese fish eggs to me, but this one didn’t Medium Bluefin Toro Bonito with scallion and soy sauce– strong flavor and amazing texture Sea Bass with Japanese sea salt Yellowtail with seaweed Otoro with wasabi — good as expected Mackerel with ginger sauce Salmon Belly with seaweed — not as fatty as I thought it would be California Uni with Wasabi soy sauce — Uni is delicious, so this was no exception Red Snapper with Yuzu sauce Spicy Bluefin medium fatty tuna hand roll with wasabi scallion sauce My favorites were the Bonito, Uni, and Otoro. The Salmon Belly wasn’t as fatty as other places I’ve had it. Maybe it wasn’t aged long enough. Anyways, quality and texture of fish was great for every piece. The omakase was a bit small to me for the $ 65 price. I think I’m spoiled by Sushi Yasu where omakase consists of 5 different plates for only $ 60. I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but if you’re in the area and want good omakase definitely check this place out.

How do you say«Holy sh*t» in Japanese? Whatever the translation may be, you will be thinking that exact same thing after you eat at Katsuei. Most of us are accustomed to mediocre sushi that serves California Roll this and Volcano Roll that. In short, we accept Americanized sushi as the norm. But if you’re looking for a more traditional approach to this masterful art of Japanese cuisine, then look no further than Katsuei. The service is impeccable. The servers are knowledgeable and very friendly. The ambiance is simple and clean as is common in Japanese restaurants. And the food??? Spectacular! Each piece of fish is expertly cut and perfectly molded on the best little tufts of vinegary rice. You can do without the carbs if you prefer sashimi. I highly recommend the surf clam and the seared salmon belly sushi. They are absolutely divine. Start with lighter fish and work your way onto more intense cuts for a truly traditional experience. Finish off your meal with a simple roll and you’ll be on your way to happiness. Is it pricey? Definitely. Is it worth it? Yes!

Absolutely fabulous sushi. Had the sushi omakase($ 45), and each piece was a novel combination of flavors. The fried oyster roll and the squid were particularly noteworthy. Took one star off only because my wife’s chicken teriyaki came so much earlier than my first plate that she was already mostly done. Service was otherwise very attentive; your tea gets replaced before it gets cold and your water never gets all the way empty. Food is on par with some of the top sushi restaurants in Manhattan.

The best sushi in Park Slope hands down. So fresh and so clean!!! The Omakase I had was premo! They know quality and you won’t get the seasonal fish they have anywhere in the neighborhood. I highly recommend Katsuei!

Called a week in advance for a reservation at the bar. Upon arrival, receptionist couldn’t find my name but got seated anyway. This restaurant fills up quite fast on the weekend. Greeted with hot tea and hot towels. Ask the staff about the menu! They will explain each and everything to you if you aren’t too knowledgeable. If at the bar, the chef will also tell you when to use soy sauce, wasabi, eat with your hands, etc. Sea Urchin Uni $ 6 — This was great! We knew we wanted Uni so we had to get this. Uni was not included in the Omakase. This must be the best and freshest Uni I’ve tasted. Now my expectations are high for any contender that wants that title. Sashimi and Sushi Omakase $ 65 — Chef’s choice designed to experience the freshest seafood of the day. The taste & texture of each fish is riveting! Unfortunately, I don’t remember each and every piece as i was busy taking photos and indulging the fresh taste! Ever since I’ve eating Omakase, I’ve avoided all other«basic» Japanese restaurants. Try the experience for yourself and you will not look back!

Food is delicious here. No doubt about it. Last month, I took my bf here for his bday and we did the omakase. Spent a pretty penny because the house’s expectation is that you supplement your meal with items from the menu, i.e., you’re not going to be full if you only do the omakase. NBD, after all, it’s a special occasion and we’re there to spend(spent $ 285 for two people). However, this past weekend, I decided to do take-out. I ordered the sushi/sashimi combo for $ 37 and it was, literally, only enough food for a snack. I’m talking 5 pieces of sushi and 4 small sashimi pieces. I couldn’t believe it. I had to throw some frozen gyoza on the stove in order to come close to filling my tummy. Bottom line is: this place is not big on value. If you wanna splurge on an amazing omakase, come here and be prepared to lay out some cash. For anything else, go to Ki Sushi, a place that also has great sushi and better value.

I had a craving for sushi last Sunday and since all the reasonably priced omakase places near us were either booked up or closed for the evening, we decided to make the trek out to Park Slope and hit up Sushi Katsuei. The sushi omakase here is $ 45, a real bargain, considering anything decent in Manhattan probably starts off around $ 75. The omakase includes 10 pieces of sushi and one handroll. We started off our meal with the sautéed mushroom appetizer. It was yummy but nothing you can’t make at home. For the omakase we had: Otoro with a light dab of mustard sauce Yellowtail, with scallion and wasabi Black snapper with a yuzu soy sauce Something that looked like it was in the yellowtail family that I coundn’t make out the name of with soy sauce and scallions. This was really good! Lightly charred salmon with soy and shiso leaf Octopus with plum paste and wasabi Mackerel poached with scallions Slightly charred otoro with wasabi Fried oysters Yellowtail scallion hand roll The standouts of the omakase for me were the yellowtail and black snapper, although every piece was delicious. Our add-on pieces were also very good — my husband who loves fishier fish order the Spanish mackerel. It was less fishy than some of the others we’ve had, so even I enjoyed it. I ordered the Santa Barbara uni and scallop flavored with lemon juice and sea salt. The uni was very fresh and the lemon juice really added a clean bright taste to the scallop. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as our usual joint, Tanoshi, but it is still very tasty, and very reasonably priced. I think my only complaints are that a couple of pieces were a little bit too heavily flavored, like the octopus. Also we got two pieces of otoro, one slightly more cooked than the other, but basically tasted exactly the same. These are minor complaints though, and I would definitely come back again and would even recommend my Manhattan friends making a trek out here.

Came here on Friday for date night bc I kept reading about their omakase. Surprisingly we were able to get a reservation for that night and then when my bc got caught in traffic they were able to move us to a later time. We sat at the sushi bar for the full omakase experience but you can also order the omakase at a regular table & they will bring everything out together. For a Friday night they were busy but not crazy so. It’s still an intimate environment and which was great. Food: –snow pea salad: came with a light shallot vinaigrette which brought out the flavor but wasn’t overwhelming. The snow peas were crisp and refreshing –sake: we ordered the $ 20 cold sake under premium(I don’t remember the name but it’s the only one for $ 20). There’s a good portion for the price. The flavor is light and not overwhelming Omakase: we got the sushi and sashimi. –sashimi comes with a delicious oyster &6 pieces of fish. The mackerel was a bit fishy for me but everything else was perfection. The tuna was probably one of the best things I’ve ever had –sushi comes as 7 pieces. Everything was phenomenal. Perfectly crafter and mixed flavors. Not too much rice, just a bit of chef special sauces on top to bring out the flavor. We ordered 4 extra pieces ala cart and were not disappointed. The troll salmon was the best piece of salmon I have ever had without a doubt. Grand finale was the toro hand roll. Also unreal. This place is right around the corner & amazing so we will 100% be coming back. The omakase is reasonably priced but still not cheap. I think the plian rolls are well priced however

This place has been open for two years and I am upset to just be finding it now. This place is fantastic. Miss K was home for a night before heading back out so, we wanted to have a special dinner with her. This was certainly the place to do it. When we walked in, I noticed three sushi chefs behind the counter wearing white coats with ties tucked into them. All with glasses, all looking in their 60’s. They were familiar. «is that the guy from Gari?» «Is that the guy from Sekki?» «Is that our waitress from Gari» Turns out we were correct on all accounts. I started getting more excited. The waitress we recognized is now the owner for this place. She was super sweet, remembered us and gave Miss K a tshirt. She also spoke with her in Japanese. We started with some cooked dishes: Cold eggplant with bonito in a sweet soy sauce: This was cooked eggplant sitting in a sweet soy topped with bonito flakes. this was delicious. We also had their fried chicken which had one of the most tasty outer shells I have had on fried chicken in recent memory. Though it was slightly dry, they provide lemon to bring some moisture. We also had broiled salmon collar that was amazing. Fatty with a sweet charred outside. Damn, so good. We then moved on to the 65 dollar sushi and sashimi Omakese. They provided soy sauce and we were told the tuna was the only one we should use it with. The snapper at 9 o’clock was covered in lemon and salt. Normally a throw away piece, this was remarkable. It was salty and lemony and the fish was fatty and oh so fresh. Lovely. The slightly charred salmon which i normally do not like was meaty and beautiful. Mackerel is always my favorite piece but, I have to say, that salmon was a shocker. It was very much in the style of Gari. We were to eat one piece of each: yellow tail, salmon, tuna with various things painted on and added to. We added some pieces to the omakase Scallop Sushi, crab and uni with an uni sauce that was ridiculously good. We also added some of the best Tomago sushi I have had. Finally the Omakase comes back to finish with a hand roll of tuna. It’s all about the papers the papers. So crisp and crunchy paper giving way to the fatty fish with some scallions. This was so simple and beautiful. Another thing we were missing in Brooklyn that we now have, or have had for the last two years but, i am just finding out about. Taro was my go to but, there is a new place to throw into the rotation.

Fish is fresh and depending on the day, they do have the fresh scallops, uni and oysters that I love. Outdoor seating is a plus. You can count on service to be excellent. However despite good quality of fish, I still find the place to be a bit overpriced.

I would probably be here every single day if not for the distance and portion.(Ok, so if I could I would seriously keep on going on the orders, but it’s tax season and budgets are tight lol) Seriously, $ 45 for sushi omakase? Granted… My sashimi omakase plus the 6 extra piece I ordered came out around $ 95… But wow, the quality and selection of fish was amazing and the sushi chef and service was truly fantastic. We wanted to try the variety so we got different omakase a but I would probably do the sushi next time and do sashimi a la carte. My favorite was the giant clam, the toro as usual is fantastic, and the uni served in its shell was fresh, firm, and delicious. This was quite a fun stop from visiting the Brooklyn museum, and will plan to be back for more when I’m here for cherry blossoms at the botanical garden next!(Btw, tea, though free, is seriously awesome green matcha tea)

I don’t think you can beat the price here, that’s for sure. $ 65 for omakase?! Whaaaat. The sashimi & sushi omakase is definitely worth the few extra bucks. I’d even say that their sashimi portion was better than the sushi. Oh, and def. go for the monkfish liver appetizer in addition. It was perfection. I can’t give this place 5 stars though, because their sushi didn’t blow my mind at all. Yes, it was really fresh. Yes, it was good and I enjoyed eating it. But in my opinion, it might have been the rice that just didn’t move and wow me in every bite. Seasoning and temperature on the rice are so crucial. Then again, for the pricing, it definitely met my expectations and all in all was a good meal. Filling.
