Good food. Reasonably priced. Get the jalapeño poppers. I also dig their reuben sandwich.

My dad and i are both fans of this place, he introduced me to it. When you first walk in there is a large bar area with tall tables and the bar of course, then you come across a few steps that lead you into the dining area. First time i came here we sat in the bar area. This place has a lot of old school charm and thats something I rly did love about it. We sat next to this little fireplace since it was kinda cold that day. Bartender greeted and served us drinks, recommended a few things as well. I got a steak sandwich and it came with these giant tater tots, they are made in house and seriously the most amazing thing ever. Anytime i think about that place that’s the one thing i remember specifically. We have been back once more after that, i had a seafood pasta that was super good. I’m sure we will be back again eventually to enjoy more things off their menu.

Visiting Buffalo for the first time, looking for a nice neighborhood restaurant, and found this one on Unilocal,we were very pleased of what we found. Very nice staff, good food and nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend this Irish Pub

Based off the reviews I honestly expected better. We ordered the pizza logs however one side of the logs were cold and wet– ruined that part of it. The beef on a weck was not really the famous beef on a weck we’ve heard around. The cut of roast beef was good however the sandwich all together was meh just ok. The soup that came with the sandwich(we got the Triple D platter) was not even worth a second bite and the macaroni and cheese another family member had reminded me of the cheese you would get at a 7 eleven on a chili cheese dog, yet watered down. Our waitress was great however when we were waiting the bar tender seemed a little conceited and I even over heard him scoff at my moms request for a specific drink and he talked to a guy sitting at the bar about us. Just petty things like that will make us not want to return. Guess when we visit our sister again we will go to Charlie’s for a beef on a weck and hopefully no tude from the staff

A south buffalo institution this place is a bit difficult for me to review objectively and without nostalgia. Classic Irish American pub décor and that warm, inviting, families welcome service that I associate with«old buffalo» and dare I say a bit reminiscent of Ireland. Their Irish beer cheddar soup is the best example I’ve ever had, with just the perfect sharp cheese bite and big perfectly cooked chunks of potato. Their jalapeño and cheese stuffed tater tots are also a highlight. I had the Irish filet mignon, which was tasty, though a bit over cooked(I ordered medium rare, it came out closer to medium well). My wife had liver and onions which she described as good but not great. My daughters prime rib(on special) was just cry and delicious. The wings smelled delicious. You might find the pub grub to be more their specialty than the entrees.

My second time. Beef On weck delicious. Roll toasted crisp and lots of salt and carraway seed piled high with thinly sliced beef. Rueben also was delicious. The jalapeño tater tots have a slight kick cheesy and also tasty. Emily was a great server.

This Buffalo Irish pub serves up some decent food. I went in for the Triple D Platter and was satisfied(but not blown away). The bread they use for the beef slider was WAAAAAAY too salty for my taste. The beer cheese soup was a bit too strong for my taste(but it wasn’t bad). The crab cake wasn’t very good. The jalapeño cheese tater tots stole the show. Those little fuckers were outstanding. All in all, I liked the place but didn’t love it. Standard Irish pub fare.

My fiancé and i stopped in on a saturday night; we were staying in buffalo for a bills game and searched Unilocal & found this place. I’m glad we did! We both had the french onion soup which was very flavorful! He got the prime rib entrée which he very much enjoyed and i got the mandarin and goat cheese salad, delicious! This place had nice character and our waitress was friendly. Thanks for a good meal!

8 total people including 413 yr olds. We were in there as soon as they opened and were greeted tremendously which sometimes isn’t the case when you arrive when the doors open with kids. Cool atmosphere with plenty of IPA’s on tap. Everyone enjoyed their food to include the Beef on Weck, steak and cheese sub, jalapeño tots, turkey club, and deep fried goodness stuff. Everything was good and once again the service was very good. I would recommend this as one of the better South Buffalo spots.

Blackthorn is my family’s favorite! It is our go to restaurant. We have been going here since I was little. We even had parties in the upstairs room. I can honestly say I think everything on the menu is delicious. The menu has a big selection. I definitely have my favorites. I absolutely love the Fish Fry. I think it’s the best in Buffalo! The Fish Fry is huge and comes with very generous side portions. If I’m not that hungry, I will opt for one of their amazing sandwiches! All of the sandwiches are served with homemade Jalapeño Cheddar tater tots. They are so delicious. My favorite sandwiches are the beef on week, rueben and the Triple D Platter. The Triple D Platter was featured on The Food Network’s show, Diners, Drive In’s and Dives. The platter has a mini beef on weck, mini crab cake, small cup of Irish beer soup and tater tots. The staff at Blackthorn is always so friendly and attentive. I’ve had an extremely pleasant experience every single time I’ve been!

I look forward to every Friday just for their beer battered fish fry. It is literally the best fish fry anyone can get!

Went with my family to Niagara Falls and stopped for dinner at the blackthorn. Everyone loves their food. I ordered the DDD dinner, my wife ordered a peanut pie and rest of the family ordered bunch of food. Everything was cooked perfectly and it was delicious! Tip — their portions a large. I will recommend you share the food.

Beef on Weck and Tater Tots were extraordinarily salty. Way way way way too salty. The Beer Soup was basically right on the median of average beer soups. Good DDD episode, super disappointing in my mouth.

Had to come here after seeing a repeat episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. My mom and I ordered the Triple D Platter which was a mini beef on weck, cup of Irish beer cheese soup, mini crabcake, and 2 jalapeño cheddar tater tots. It was a fantastic option to be able to try a little of everything! My Dad ordered the liver and onions and was extremely happy with it and said it was very tender. Can’t wait to come back again!

One of a few South Buffalo pubs we make it a point to return to for its cleanliness, hospitality, and menu. Like most SB pubs space inside is limited, but the atmosphere is organized and tidy. The bar isn’t large but offers a decent variety of beer and wine. Staff have always been genuine and prompt with service. The menu is solid: burgers, fish fry, and pub sandwiches. Their alternative to standard French fries, giant jalapeño tator tots are remarkable and unique to Black Thorn. If you haven’t been, go. If you have, you’ll go back.

Really enjoyed this place. Good atmosphere and decent beer selection on tap. Wings were fabulous. After 2-weeks, I’m still craving them. Went to Duff’s the following evening and our party of three unanimously agreed Blackthorn’s wings were the clear cut winner. No comparison. Beef on Wick and Pastrami sandwich were really good. Perfect amount of rock salt on the Beef on Wick buns. Tater tots aren’t tater tots – they are tater seniors… HUGE!!! Great taste and good crunchy crust. A definite go to place when in Buffalo.

I was in the South Buffalo area and one of the people I was with raved about the stuffed peppers here, so we made for Blackthorn Restaurant and Pub for dinner and drinks. We all ordered beer and dinner. Two of the people in my party ordered the pumpking and the server brought them NOT pumpking. It was still a tasty fall tap, so they drank it without saying anything, but definitely not pumpking. I started with water and once it was time for a second round I ordered pumpking and my beer was definitely darker than the others. To back this claim up: when one of the guys was late ordering his beer she asked him«Another Sam Adams?» So there you have it. The food was good! I ordered the beer and cheddar soup which was fine. It had definitely been made with a stout beer like Guinness or something else dark. It’s not Jack Astor’s Beer and Cheddar Soup, or Pearl Street Brewery’s, but it wasn’t the worst I’ve had. I also ordered the Mandarin and Goat Cheese salad, which was so fresh and had enough goat cheese in the croquette that I didn’t even use the dressing that came with it. Two of the guys got meatloaf which they finished with much relish(it was topped with bacon, apparently that’s how you do it!), and the third guy had his stuffed peppers. The atmosphere was great. We sat in the back and it was nice, beginning out in the evening as a good place to sit and talk, but as the night went on, it got louder as groups began to trickle in and the bar filled up in the front, making it hard to hear each other. So it was fine, but I won’t be making a trip down to South Buffalo for it again.

Delightful little hole-in-the-wall. My husband and I have dined at the Blackthorn twice, the first time while visiting family in Buffalo. We stopped after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We loved it so much that we carved out time to take a detour during a drive from Ohio to Vermont so that we could eat there for lunch during our trip. The Blackthorn is arguably not in the best part of town and isn’t much to look out on the outside… or the inside for that matter. Sure, the interior is outdated with«ugly» wallpaper, but I think that the style is part of the restaurant’s old charm. Whether you’re a fan of the atmosphere or not, the food cannot be knocked. The beer cheese soup is out of this world. It smells and tastes strongly of beer but not overwhelmingly so. It’s cheesy and adding a little bit of the restaurant’s delicious buffalo sauce directly to the soup adds a kick and enhanced flavor. I was hesitant to order the crab cakes at first, but I am glad I did. They are meaty and fresh with the perfect amount of filler(very little!). The lemon dill aioli served over them is bright and refreshing. My husband ordered the beef on weck both times(a true Buffalo, NY staple), and his mouth still waters to this day whenever we recall our stops at the Blackthorn. Definitely a hidden gem worth a stop. It’s a charming little neighborhood spot that could easily be overlooked, but the food is out of this world and worth every rave review it’s received.

This place is just a ball of fun. The bartenders are so friendly, outgoing and entertaining. They are really fast and attentive even when the bar is packed, which is great. They have a great selection of beer on tap and their outdoor seating area is big and inviting. There is only one women’s restroom stall which can be tricky when you’re in for a long night of drinking. There is room to dance which is always good! Haven’t had the food yet but I am eager to come back and try the famous tater tots!

I once had a dream that I was watching the Bills win a game while sitting in this place. I knew it was a dream because the Bills don’t win games. So it kind of ruined it. Dreams are a lot more interesting when you think they are real. Now in seriousness, I wanted to watch a Bills game and needed to get out of the house I was staying in, in West Seneca, so I took to the streets and landed in this cozy little typical old-style neighborhood pub. I didn’t notice anything restaurantish about it, it was quite small and very Buffalonian, it reminded me of the East Side in the old days, and of the Goo Goo Dolls song Broadway. The drinks were good and the company was nice and it’s a decent dive bar which ticks all the dive bar boxes. And you can watch the Bills lose there.
