Kay’s at the Airport

We love Kay’s! Stop for breakfast every time we’re visiting family in Cambridge. Coconut cake-​to die for!

This is a deceptively great place. It’s like an old diner inside, but the food was more like a nice sit down restaurant. We had fabulous crab balls, both broiled and fried. Salad was good, and the service is non stop. You have a view of the runway and an occasional airplane takes to the sky for your dining entertainment. Not sure what the hours are, but we had a great lunch.

Flew down and had a late lunch early dinner at Kay’s today. They once again met all expectations. The staff is friendly and even though they were pretty busy they maintained a good level of service. My wife had the fried chicken salad, huge bowl of goodness that provided enough for a second meal with the left overs. I had the soft shell crabs which were done perfectly. A nice side of cucumbers and onions that was much better then I expected. The whole bill including a 20% tip was $ 33. Cheap and good eats!

We went for lunch and were looking forward to a great meal. We hadn’t been to Kay’s in quite some time. What a disappointment.
My husband ordered the hamburger, which he had no complaints. I had some of his French fries and thought they were just slightly overcooked.
I ordered the hot turkey sandwich. When the waitress brought it out, I thought to myself, «. What in Gods green earth is that?» All I saw was this white square with white and I mean WHITE gravy covering it. (Not sausage gravy). I asked for cole slaw since I didn’t want mashed or French fried potatoes. The slaw was nice size with paprika sprinkled on top. I couldn’t eat it. It tasted very sour– did not like it at all and I am not usually a picky eater. My husband didn’t care for it either. So I just ate the bland turkey off the bread. I really think they mixed cornstarch or flour and water, heated it up and called it gravy. Jar gravy would have been much better in my book. I told the waitress about the cole slaw but didn’t bother mentioning why I had not eaten the bread and gravy. She said she would tell them in kitchen, my comment about the slaw. I won’t be back.

Visited Kay’s Country Kitchen restaurant in March 2014. It’s located in the terminal of the Cambridge Airport, there’s a direct outside entrance marked «Restaurant».
The food and service were very good. The prices were very reasonable and the view was good of the runway. I had a bacon cheeseburger, it was great.

The moment we walked in, we knew this was a popular place for a Sunday lunch. After about a 15 minute wait we were seated inside this airport restaurant complete with large windows offering a view of the runway. As we drank our beverages from large mason jars, we pondered over what to get from the menu. It had it all, from chili cheese fries to crab cakes and turkey and gravy sandwiches to prime rib. Kay’s Country Kitchen offers a lot to choose from at a great price with friendly service. I can easily recommend this as a great restaurant to drive or fly into!

The Award-​winning crab cakes (I had them broiled, all lump, no filler) are not to be missed! Totally yummy, slightly crisp, full of flavor, nary a hint of shell.
Hubby had a burger that looked like the ones my mom used to make: unevenly rounded and thick; but with freshly sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese. He didn’t even reach for the ketchup except to add to the old-​school crinkle cut fries.
The yellow cake with chocolate frosting was good enough to fork my husband over… but I was nice and shared a couple bites.
We’re going back tomorrow!

Without Unilocal,we would of never found this place. No sign on 50 or the road its on. Be careful you’ll drive right passed it. We were expecting «Diner type» food, but got much, much better. The crab dip & md crab soup are really good. We will stop here again on the way home from the shore. Put a sign out on the highway !

Second visit to Kay’s– first was breakfast without the kids– this time for lunch with the kids. Great food– the best cheesesteak I’ve had in years! Fun to watch the planes come and go and the hummingbirds! We need to go back for dessert sometime. It always smells like cake in there!

Mmm. Just what I needed after a long day in the cold!

I have deep love of airport café’s, and Kay’s Country Kitchen is pretty great. The drinks come in huge mason jars. The grilled cheese with bacon is to die for. The cream of crab soup had lots of crab in it. The only thing I wasn’t too fond of was the fries, but then, I never love crinkle cut.

we are usually very pleased with the food and serving size but dinner Sat. Was less than expected. We both ordered from the specials that night. I had the fried oysters stuffed with imperial crab. The oysters were small and the breading on them was thick and greasy. The imperial crab was OK not great. I ordered Kale and it was seasoned well but was very gritty with sand. Somebody did not wash the kale! my husband had the prime rib. It was an inch thick but had two huge pieces of fat on it. I know prime rib is fatty but this was very unappetizing. The salads were very good.

What’s not to like? Soft drinks served in quart sized mason jars. inexpensive prices, decent food. It is an airport café. Therefore, it’s not a five-​star restaurant. But the food is enjoyable. As an added bonus, you get to watch planes take-​off and land while you eat. If you’re not a pilot, it would be a good place to bring small kids. In my case this was my young nephews. Plus, there is plenty of kid friendly food on the menu.

Kay’s is my go-​to spot when I’m taking folks up for a plane ride. It’s only a 25 minute flight from my home base of Potomac Airfield in Ft. Washington and includes a lovely hop over the bay.
Kay’s is the sweet reward on the other side. A small diner that overlooks Cambridge Airport, the food is reliable, tasty and cheap. The service is effcient and friendly. Giant sodas constantly get refilled and the food comes quick. It can be busy, but I’ve never had to wait more than a minute for the staff to wipe off a newly opened table. Bugers, crabcakes, and club sandwiches are my usual picks. The desserts aren’t bad, either.

Right off Rt 50 in Cambridge, MD this little restaurant is a great find. Most items are inexpensive and homemade. I tried the MD Crab Soup and the Crab Cake sandwich and can vouch for both. Homemade iced tea is delivered in quart jars and only $ 1.50
What really sets this place apart is the unique atmosphere. Part country diner and part free air show. The small restaurant has huge windows which allowed my 5 year old daughter to watch the airplanes and the hummingbirds.
I’m sure it was just luck, but when we went for lunch there was even a bi-​plane doing loops, stalls, and various other stunts. It was great!
Only real negative… we went back again for dinner and the service was a little slow and the place can get crowded.
