The Hoosier Salon is a great place to look for reasonably priced art for upcoming Indiana artists. There are also established pricier artists in their collections, but I like to find the unknown, diamonds in the rough among their pieces. They change their exhibits every 6 weeks, so it is always worth coming back to see what is be shown currently. As stated in another review, all the work is by Indiana artists, and much of it has an Indiana feel. Because the work changes every 6 weeks, it is hard to pigeon hole the type of artwork they offer, which I think is one of their great assets. They are a tiny bit off the beaten track, but worth finding. Last time we visited they had an unusual exhibit where many of the paintings had chalkboard within the painting. There was chalk and erasers available so viewers could embellish the artwork. It was soooo cool, and my children loved it. The wrote on every single piece of art that contained a chalkboard.

I love the Hoosier Salon. I was fortunate enough to intern here a few years ago, and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Everyone involved with the gallery, from the Executive Director(who has since been replaced) to the board members to the artists, has always been a joy to work with. Both branches of the Hoosier Salon(there’s also one in New Harmony) only accept work from Indiana artists. While there are always some edgier pieces in the gallery, this probably isn’t the place to come if you’re looking for the most daring, avant garde work in the field. A lot of the paintings and sculptures lean more to the traditional side of the fence, but I’m of the mind that art doesn’t have to be groundbreaking to be aesthetically pleasing. There are lovely pieces in here to be had for reasonable prices. The gallery also hosts an annual exhibit, which tours libraries around the state, and an annual auction and benefit with music, wine and food. It’s a lot of fun!
