CLOSED! Finally! Hopefully the next place is a few steps up from the debacle that was Taco Fuego.

The grilled veggie burrito was pretty great. Veggies tasted fresh, lots of other yummy fillings. I think my burrito weighed at least a pound. Especially loved the salsa verde that came with it, very garlicky which I love. My only complaint — we asked to have guac added to our burritos and the lady told us there was already avocado on it, which we decided was even better. But when we got home and ate, the avocado was nowhere to be found. Bummer. I’d go here again though when visiting.

My order was wrong, it was missing items. What I did have was bland, and not much better then taco bell type food. I would never go here again. There is so much good mexican food in Chicago, don’t waste your time here.

As The Pony goes, so goes Taco Fuego. This is a late night burrito joint that won’t be mistaken for anything but. Having skipped dinner, I was in need of sustenance after a show at the Congress. An oversized burrito seemed like the perfect cap to the day. But places that advertise oversized burritos do not often cater to those with finely tuned taste buds. And even though I was coming from a Pogues concert, mine were not the least bit dulled. Rookie move on my part. The steak burrito, as others have noted, doesn’t have much in the way of steak. It’s hefty, but too much of the weight comes from rice. The bits of steak that you do come across are morsel-sized, and they lack the flavor that one expects from this type of meat. I thought the hot sauce they provided would do well to actually give this burrito some punch, but even then it didn’t taste like much. Their hot sauce resembled a more mild version of kimchi. If you’re not sure what that is, let me educate you: fermented Korean cabbage. And that’s about how it tastes like, too. I ended up using my fridge’s bottle of Tapatio five bites in, and he nearly saved the burrito. God bless that sombrero’d bastard for trying. Taco Fuego needs a serious ingredient upgrade if they ever hope to be taken seriously. If you follow their business on a graph, it will closely model The Pony’s, but even then, I’m not sure there are enough bros in West Lakeview to keep this place afloat.

Came here for a little comfort after the Bears lost in the playoffs this past weekend. Heck who am I kidding I didn’t really care about the outcome. I had the Steak burrito which was good but it could have used more steak. The burrito was the size it should be, you know standard burrito size just like Chipoltle. Though it is not as heavy as Chipoltle because it contained more lettuce than anything else but for the price($ 4.50) you can’t go wrong! Ill be back if i’m in the area late night and I in need of some belly soothing nourishment.

Needed a mexican fix, was way to cold to go outside so I researched Unilocal, and picked Taco Fuego based on the reviews. I ordered a «Monster burrito» and a pork taco, I also ordered chips and salsa. Monster burrito was big, aside from the fact that the website showed $ 11 I was charged 14.99 I fixed that on the call. The burrito was cooked well, the steak was, well it was sub par, I would call it poor considering the cost. and there wasn’t alot of it. There was more burrito than meat. Add to the fact that sour cream liquid leaked all over my shirt, it was good, when i bit into meat and such, but way too much shell. It was very runny, probably a mix between salsa, sour cream, and watery beans. It made a mess. The pork taco was good. The chips were ice cold, so i nuked them and then they were ok. Delivery was on time(1 hour) and courteous. Based on the pork taco alone, I would go 4 stars, Add the rest, = 1 star. With so many mexican places nearby, you would think they would try a little harder. I will not revisit.

One star is one more star than Taco Fuego deserves. Prior to ordering from Taco Fuego, I was not aware that guacamole included crayon pieces. This is perhaps to make up for its lack of flavor. Upon being made aware that they had included crayon in my guac, they were only willing to refund my money for that one dish, while accusing me of making it up. As I had ordered it delivery, they were unwilling to swing by my house and check the food I had spit out or examine the black waxy substance on my teeth. I was unwilling to eat the rest of the food to see if I could find more craft supplies in it, but this did not seem to affect their refund policy. I was also not aware that refried beans are actually a soup… or perhaps I won some kind of contest and received mine in a pork-fat flavored broth as a prize. Unlucky me. Aside from having foreign objects in their food and presenting it in unrecognizable formats, nothing I ordered was worth eating. The burrito, while large, had no flavor whatsoever. The tortilla chips were stale, and I have had rice of far superior quality from a box that included the words«a-Roni» in the brand name. Dealing with the delivery driver was a true treat. Not only did he take an hour and 15 minutes to get here(during which time I could have walked to a grocery store, purchased all the necessary ingredients and made a superior meal at home), but he was reluctant to get out of his car, ring my doorbell and walk up to my 2nd floor apartment to DELIVERTHEFOOD. Why? Because it was cold out. Sir, you took a job as a delivery driver in a city that is known for its cold winters. Either do your job without complaint, find an indoor job or move somewhere warmer to be a delivery driver, but do not complain to me about your career choices. So, unless you’ve got a craft project planned or were mercifully born without taste buds, this is not a place you want to order from.

Sadly, not a fan of you Taco Fuego. Giant burrito option, check. All the expected toppings in said burrito, check. Also rice, check. What a let down. Their rice was not good. I’ve made better rice out of a package in 7 min on the stove. Sorry but true, in my opinion. Retried beans were only ok as well. Too many bean chunks for my liking. Chorizo taco was pretty good. I used a youswoop that was a great deal, good thing bc even though we got a ton of food for our money it wasn’t all that worth it. The al working the counter when I ordered was super friendly and helpful, which sadly got my hopes up. Also the place had a weird smell. I thankfully did carryout.

I like the fact that they have a giant burrito option, because I’m a giant burrito kind of guy. The food isn’t anything super special, but they deliver pretty quick and everything was warm. Again, giant burrito… nice option. They do have great steak tacos… outstanding infact. Its a great delivery option if you live in the area and are craving mexican food.

I just ordered from here and THEN decided to check out the Unilocal reviews. so naturally I was expecting only some of my order and for it to be mediocre, not to mention having it take over an hour for my food to arrive. Well, the entire order was there. Delivery driver was really nice too. My food arrived in about 50 minutes, which was a nice surprise as I was expecting to wait another 30. Needing to order at least $ 15 worth of stuff was a little annoying, but I get it. Chicken burrito, fries and chicken wings… Burrito: considering I ordered through Grub Hub, I was expecting them to put beans in when I said none. Nope, they listened. The chicken is quite salty and the burrito was definitely what I expected(average), but a few bites hit the spot. Maybe it’ll taste better cold? Chicken wings: I wasn’t sure what to expect. I guess they’re breaded. The chipotle flavor isn’t bad… but I hope they taste better cold. Honestly, I’ll probably throw them out. They’re pretty big though. I guess that’s a plus? Fries: honestly, I was expecting some frozen crinkle-cut fries, but they were cheap and helped me reach the minimum, so whatever. They were surprisingly good. Oddly enough, they had the perfect amount of salt. Honestly, the only reason I ordered from here is because the only thing I had to eat all day was a bagel and coffee and after waking up at 2am, I was hungry. Falling asleep meant I didn’t grocery shop so my options for dinner were ice cream and orange juice, neither of which I wanted. Taco Fuego beats eating ice cream and drinking some orange juice, but I probably won’t order from here again unless I find myself hungry so late at night without anything to eat. The food hit the spot, there’s a LOT left over and if I was drunk I would probably think the food was delicious… but I’m not.

Their giant burrito is really giant. Get it without lettuce, though. The leftovers don’t microwave well with it, and you’re NOT finishing this thing in one sitting. The carne asada they use seems better than most of the restaurants in this price range. I didn’t get any grizzle/fat. I really appreciated that. All-in-all, it’s a good mid-range Mexican restaurant. It’s nothing spectacular, but they don’t pretend to be.

So, I have ordered from Taco Fuego twice. And its okay– Just Okay. I have ordered delivery on both occasions, and on BOTH occasions they have messed up in one way or another. My first order they failed to bring part of my order and they took over an hour to deliver. The food was decent– but my perception of the place was scarred because of my missing items. It just wasn’t complete. Tainted Experience. Seems like I am not the only one who has had this same experience based on other reviews from fellow Unilocalers. So– Since the food was decent and I thought I would give them another try since my last experience was less than perfect. I am a Cubs fan– I’ll give ya another chance. So I did. Well… Strike 1-this time they took almost 2 hours to bring me my food(not sure why I waited so long– but they already ran my card). Strike 2-The food was not warm and I had to microwave it. Strike 3– I ordered a steak burrito it had more lettuce than meat. The rice– I could have made better myself. The«spanish» rice was straight out of a box. Personally I can only tolerate white rice out of the box. But this was not even good rice out of the box. TACOFUEGO– YOU’REOUT! Being Half Mexican I can be picky when it comes to Mexican food. My friends suggested I give this spot a shot– I did. Never. Again. I think its time to take my friends out to a better spot for some GOOD Mexican food.

Something between fast food & an average tacqueria. Likes: This might be the only place in Chicago that will deliver you a milkshake at 1am, and believe me, I’ve looked! That alone dose a lot for me! I also like their strawberry churros. Their service is good too, though a bit slow(both dine in and delivery). Dislikes: Food is low quality, basically between a Taco Bell & and a small Tacqueria. It’s not terrible, but it’s not competitive with many sit down dining restaurants. The interior is a big unclean, though new. If you find yourself craving refried beans & a quesadilla at midnight, this is your place!

I hate to be so harsh on any restaurant, especially b/c the employees seemed nice enough but I must summarize why I hate this place… 1. They didn’t have air conditioning so the door was left open which allowed a cloud of giant gnats swarm in the restaurant. 2. I wasn’t served the food, rather I was notified when it was ready(this I don’t mind so much, but this restaurant should be doing everything it can to make up for the bad food). 3. Within seconds I found a long black hair at the bottom of my nachos… I do not have long black hair. 4. I ordered one fish taco and one chicken taco. The fish didn’t come with any kind of sauce(authentic or not, I’ve never had a fish taco without a sauce or marinade of some kind). It wasn’t even seasoned, no cilantro! The chicken, well, didn’t taste anything like chicken. Also, they couldn’t even spare a lime… apparently that’s considered an ‘extra’ and they charge for it. 5. The horchata machine was empty(it was midday). 6. For two people the lunch ended up costing $ 18, which is too much for a supposedly inexpensive taco joint. To summarize, the food was completely unflavorful and hairy… and since a lime is considered ‘extra’ I don’t think this place is particularly inexpensive either. I can’t believe all the press this joint is getting!

This is a new taco place in my neighborhood that recently opened. There hasn’t been a decent, authentic taco place(and by decent I mean on the level of La Pasadita) in my neighbhorhood for a while, as many of the taco places have been replaced by more upscale fare. Upon entering, I noticed there is no A/C running in this place. A big strike for those who want to dine in. I ordered the steak taco dinner and waited 10 minutes for it to be ready. When ready I grabbed the take out order and headed home(2 mins away) to eat. Results were average at best. The steak was relatively dry, not seasoned very heavily and very finely chopped. Cilantro and onions were adequate. Beans and rice were, well beans and rice. Nothing extraordinary or special about them. If you are dying for late night Mex, then this place will suffice, but if you have the time, there are better taco places(like the one I mentioned above) that make a killer steak taco.

Taco Fuego es ENFUEGO! Their Monster burrito was MONSTROUS indeed! I think it was a foot long or probably over a foot long. It was thick and definitely not skimpy. As I’m trying to get rid of this post pregnancy figure, I of course did not even try to eat that myself. It was for my husband and he definitely had to eat that thing in stages. He had his with steak and said it was delicious. Afterward, I had to try a nibble and it was good. For myself, I ordered chicken tacos. They were good too. I was indecisive as to which sauce to get, so I asked for about 6 different sauces. My favs were the Peanut and the Mango salsas. I heard the desserts here are awesome and I’m all about desserts, so I’ll have to try that the next time I visit the area. It’s a pretty good location. It was hard to find parking, but it’s pretty much a walking community so they received a ton of foot traffic. This place was busy around dinnertime and so I had to wait a bit, but definitely worth the wait. The interior was nice, clean and very Belmont-ish. As I was waiting for my food, I was overhearing some of the conversations about the food and it seems that everyone else was enjoying their meal too. This one couple in particular had asked the lady at the register what town of Mexico the owners of this place were from and wondered if the dishes that were served here are particular to their hometown in Mexico, because they have a newfound interest in visiting that town. I was giggling in my head bcuz they were really just eating the typical food served in any other Mexican restaurant. but hmm… maybe Taco Fuego had it’s own yummy secret flavor?

A standard hole in the wall Mexican joint with a cheap and expansive menu. Service was kind of weird/slow. They brought out the food as it was cooked in 4 different stages. The shrimp ceviche was OK. The shrimp did not seem fresh, but everything else was tasty. They lay the ceviche over a bunch of chips and you dip it in that way. The steak burrito was huge and packed with steak and veggies. One of the better burritos I have ever had. This also held true for the MONSTER steak quesadilla, which was enormous. They also have some neat salsas. We got avocado salsa and mango salsa. I will be going back, but I might call ahead since the service is slow. Note: If you are looking for margaritas, look elsewhere.

My roommate stumbled upon a youswoop deal for $ 30 worth of food for 15 bones. We decided to use it this week since it’s just a few blocks from us and both of us are Mexican food junkies. We ordered chips and salsa, chips and guac, and french fries for appetizers(roommate was craving fries, don’t ask). The chips were ok, but some of them were a bit stale and could have used salt. I did appreciate that they were made from real tortillas though. The salsa we had was tomatillo salsa, very thin and green. I would have prefered it to be more chunky, but it had a great taste nonetheless. Since I don’t like guac, I’ll defer to el roommate(Gary O.) to review it. For entrees, I ordered the barbacoa burrito dinner(sin frijoles y crema) and G ordered the tostada dinner(veggie). The burrito was cooked perfectly, warm soft tortilla with just a touch of crispy-ness. The veggies and pico de gallo were really good too. The barbacoa was nice and tender… but where’s the flavor?!? It didn’t seem marinated at all and had zero spice. Here’s a hint guys: cook it like Chipotle does. Their barbacoa is the nuts. The rice had a good flavor and was nice and moist(I hate that word). The tostadas looked good and were loaded up pretty full. One odd thing… when we went, the pop fountain was out of Coke, Diet Coke, Fanta, and one other beverage. Fortunately, they also had cans.

I read about this place online in the Tribune, and after being taunted by that giant burrito pictured on their home page for a week, I finally gave in and ordered some takeout. First of all, I’d like to shake the hand of the owner of Taco Fuego for making milkshakes available via delivery. You sir, are a good man. While the food itself was mediocre, you get a ton for what you pay for. I could see this being an excellent post-bar option. The delivery was fast and friendly and I agree with other reviewers that the skirt steak is the best choice. All in all, I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here but I’d stop by for a giant, cheap burrito if I were in the neighborhood.

Chicago has a weird relationship with tacos. They’re either overly precious with a two-hour line, or relegated to ‘late-night’ food. Taco Fuego fits nicely between the two. We sampled the tacos, and they ranged from ok to almost really good. It was nice to see each one spiced in it’s own way — it wasn’t just meat and a standard set of toppings. The green sauce tasted nice and tart, the red sauce tasted like a weak enchilada mole. The churros are a great deal, and paired with a horchata were easily the best part of the meal. I’m looking forward to going back.
