Genghis Grill

The food was delicious. The staff was very friendly and my drink was never empty. The waiter was funny was quick when asked a question. The lady behind the food service bar was very informative, she even guessed it was my first time. She explained it very easily and made sure I didn’t mess up. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food portion. I would highly recommend checking this place out.

Writing this review because I love the food here but the service is bad, the only one working was the hostess– waitress were huddled at bar and never checked on any customers — I blame the manager who allowed it. Maybe they should take notice how dead they are during lunch… I take it back the hostess ignored me when asking for someone to get my waitress — dropped to 1 star now

Don’t let the outside presentation of this restaurant fool you. Very clean inside and the staff is friendly and funny. The prices are reasonable. You build your own bowl and they give you LOTS of choices at their Fresh Market Bar. The Fresh Market Bar is also clean and well organized. Jay was a great waitress who was very attentive and had a great sense of humor. Can’t wait to come back with our family. Just remember to bring a sweater because it is cold inside.

Kyle was a great waiter. The drinks were great and the food was fresh and delicious. Always one of our favorite places in Houston, and I’m happy to say the one in Corpus Christi is great too!

We were happy when they opened here — we go to the San Antonio location all the time. When it’s clean, it’s good. Love the fresh veggies and healthy options. Hate that they don’t have bottomless bowl like in San Antonio. Sometimes it’s not very clean. I’d rather they spend money to keep it really clean than on table computers. Mostly we like it.

They always burn the food, and the service is very disorganized. I get a free bowl every year through online stuff and it’s not even worth it for free.

A-​OK and then some! Genghis Grill earns a solid three and a half stars for fresh, recognizable ingredients tailored to your own recipe in a clean, sanitary atmosphere.
I really enjoy making my own bowl from the fresh veggies on the salad-​style self service bar. Most of the time there is a good selection; sometimes it gets sparse and meager-​but I can always find something I like.
Service is friendly and competent and there is a bar with a formidable selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Usually place is great food is good. This last time, my girlfriend and I both got food poisoning. Vomiting and diarrhea or days. It’s the worst thing I have ever experienced. I will never, ever be back again.

The food here was decent to good. I would have given it 3 stars, but the waitress was presumptuous and handed me the credit card machine with the tip already preset at a 25% tip… Very uncool.

Place wasn’t real busy, so we got seated right away. Had a birthday coupon, so we ate basically for the price of one. Food was fine, prepared as well as a big circular stir-​fry grill can do. Food-​wise, nothing really to complain about.
Things that bugged me? There’s a weather-​break (two sets of doors for the uninitiated) and right inside the weather-​break was an odor absorber. It wasn’t hard to notice. After going through the line, I wanted to go wash my hands (come on… it’s got a lot of meat laying out in the open) and noticed two more as I headed to the restroom. In the hallway leading to the restrooms (and a food prep area?) the floor was covered in mats to keep people from slipping? And LASTLY… of the four people at the fry wheel… three did not have any kind of head covering on. A woman and two guys were cooking without a hair net or a cap. THAT is a blatant health code violation.
The food was good. The restaurant needs some cleaning up and the staff really needs to adhere to health rules. That would bring my review up two whole stars.

First of all, I must disclose that I am the 2014 Corpus Christi contestant with Genghis Grill’s HealthKwest. It is a weight loss contest where we eat at Genghis Grill for 60 days (one free bowl is provided by Genghis Grill to each contestant for each day.)
I was asked by Genghis Grill to be honest regarding my review of the Corpus Christi location and that is what I will do.
Overall, the staff are usually cordial and responsive. You can tell they are mostly a hard working bunch. It takes a lot of stamina to remain on your feet all day, serving others and I admire them for their dedication.
However, there is one manager, Albert, who goes above and beyond. He is funny, upbeat and always has a great attitude. (From what I understand, this location does not have one general manager, but three overall managers.) I have also seen Albert interacting with guests. I think the other Hispanic manager, Alfred, is also courteous, kind and helpful.
I know staffing is a terrible issue at this location. They have a hard time getting people to actually come to work and unfortunately, it shows. The food line is routinely in bad condition. More often than not, there is food covering the floor near the food line. There is also almost usually other food items in containers for other foods. (Like jalapenos in my pineapple, which I dislike very much!) The floors are sticky. The numbers used for orders are sticky. I guess patrons at this location can be pretty messy and it is probably difficult for the staff to keep up with it.
Once you get your food grilled, I must say even after eating here for 40 days straight, I still enjoy my meals! The food is delicious and it is a sneaky, yet clever way to insert lots of veggies into a meal, especially for someone who usually doesn’t like to eat them. (LIKE ME!) Overall, the food is a healthy option, as opposed to the plethora of fast food establishments throughout the city. If you can get past the messy serving lines long enough to make it to the area where your bowl is grilled, I can almost guarantee you will enjoy the meal. Try mixing the special sauces. My favorite is the 3G sauce. When I’m at the store, the smell of food being grilled makes me hungry every time!
Helpful tip: Bring a container of hand sanitizer. Use it before you enter the food line and use it after you make your bowl. (I’ve had cancer twice and can still catch germs quite easily, so I am a bit of a germaphobe.)

The last two times we have been it has been dirty. We use to go quite frequently but I would not go back.

This place used to be alright, but lately it’s been terrible. The seats were sticky, and the staff was very… unprofessional. Our waitress looked like she retired from the nearby «Bottoms up» and I asked for No Noodles or Rice, I got both. Its sad a once good chain, is being run so badly

Sadly, GG has gone downhill. The concept works if it’s properly maintained however the Corpus location has gone to seed. Our last visit the place had a foul odor that was masked with bleach, which instead of ridding the odor only made it worse. Kitchen hygeine as well as overall cleanliness was lacking. Our server who recognized us as regulars managed to make sure our needs were met, the raw food line wasn’t fully stocked (we arrived at 6PM so everything should have been full), needed to be cleaned as there was scattered things everywhere, grill area was a skeleton crew and overall comapred to our prior visits Genghis Grill is slumming.

I have been to this chain around the country, so I know that they have several different styles — this one is 3 bowl size style
This visit I was alone, walked in with a book, and the hostess wanted to seat me in the darkest part of the restaurant. I asked to move to an area that had more light, which she did, but then she explains to the server that a different server would be taking care of me. So I sit, with no menu and wait. Manger ask the table on either side of me how thing are going, and I wait. I standup, make eye contact with both the manager & hostess, and I wait. As I am gathering up my book to leave, the hostess asks if she can get me a drink
What happened to service?

The pros: interesting concept, fill up a bowl DIY stir fry
The cons: dirty restaurant, sloppy ingredient line, messy grill area, sticky menus, over priced, crappy bar
With so many other Asian options in town, we won’t go back :(

This place is great. Load up your bowl with heaping goodness and enjoy. You can be a mad scientist and fill the bowl with whatever you like as you go or follow the rules and the easy menu numbering strategy and enjoy. Remember: LOAD UP THAT BOWL. Don’t be shy. Make it a heaping mess when you hand it over to be cooked. You won’t be sorry.
