This review is wayyyyy overdue… now to give the Detroit Design Festival(DDF) some recognition: DDF took place back in September over an eight day stretch, featuring some amazing FREE events taking place all around the city, and was beyond a doubt THEBEST event i’ve been to all year! The series of events that made up the Detroit Design Festival were absolutely incredible!!! Their opening party at New Center Park featured a runway show, hors d’oeuvres, artwork by Belozro, clothing and accesories from the ‘Detroit Hustles Harder’ team at Division Street Boutique, a guest appearnce by Joe Faris from Project Runway, and a souvenir bag filled with DDF swag for ALL attendees! An awesome free event plus a goody bag? Sweet!!! At that point i was hooked… what other amazing events did the festival have in store? I attended as many DDF events as possible… trying to learn, absorb, and experience as much art/music/culture/design as humanly possible. At one point i did 8 events in one day, and loved every minute of it!!! Some of the highlights of the Detroit Design Festival included: + Kick-off Party(previously mentioned) + The Alley Project(def worth checking out — graffiti murals adorn a slew of garages in this SW Detroit neighborhood and there was a live graffiti competition taking place during DDF, soooo awesome!) + Carriage House Letterpress(a hands-on letterpress workshop AND you got to take the works you made home with you) + Howrani Studio Open House(Detroit’s legendary photographer Ameen Howrani’s studio was open to the public, giving visitors an intimate look into the space of this great Detroit artist) + Eat. Sleep. Draw(live art being made at the Red Door Gallery where the finished artworks were then auctioned off later in the evening) + Fortress Studio Open House(i passed by this place dozens of times without knowing it was an art studio, so it was great to see the artist’s work… also, the hands-on painting for visiting guests was def the highlight of this studio tour!) + Lafayette Park Walking Tour(giving some background info on the awesome buildings designed by reknowned architect Mies van der Rohe) This was the first year of the Detroit Design Festival, and i really hope it becomes a recurring Detroit tradition! Can’t wait for DDF2012!!! :)
