I feel awful writing a negative review about a tried and true ice cream parlor that has amazing items & usually a super friendly staff. However, I am quite honestly appalled at how this particular Oberweis handles food allergies. I understand that when an individual that has food sensitivities or allergies chooses to eat out, they run the risk of cross contamination & must accept partial responsibility. This I completely agree with. Yet, Oberweis has a pretty rad feature in that if you have any serious allergies, you’re able to request that it be made with an allergen alert. In this instance they use all new utensils to handle the ice cream, they use fresh ice cream that hasn’t been opened or used, and so on and so forth. It’s honestly a fantastic idea & I was so excited to hear about it. The first time I ordered, I went with a hot fudge sundae with no cherries or whipped cream, just plain vanilla with hot fudge. I requested an allergy alert and explained I am deathly allergic to peanuts or peanut butter. They reassured me and I waited for my treat. When I got it, I headed home and ate it while watching tv. Part way through my fourth or fifth bite I noticed that I had begun chewing something crunchy. Confused, I spat it out only to find that it was in fact a peanut. Five minutes later I went into a full blown anaphylactic episode, had to use an epi pen and was kept in the hospital over night as the reaction was extremely serious. Obviously infuriated, my mom called Oberweis and requested to speak with a manager. She began by calmly explaining the situation and asked if there had been a mess up. The manager took great offense and began defending herself by saying that she made that order herself and that there’s no way there was any peanut and that I must be, and I quote, «overreacting.» Overreacting? Tell that to the O2 monitor my friend as it read around 88 when I was admitted. This was no misconception, it was a human err that almost cost me my life. After several months of completely avoiding Oberweis at all costs, I decided to give them another try as their ice cream is honestly just to die for(no pun intended). I ordered the same thing with the same allergy alert. My friends & I decided to eat at Oberweis rather than head elsewhere so we grabbed a table. Long story short, there was, yet again, another peanut in my ice cream. I went into anaphylactic shock once more in the store and had to be driven to the ER where I was treated extensively. Meanwhile, one friend stayed behind and asked the manager if there had been peanuts in the sundae. A different woman answered and said there was, yet again, no way. Ever after showing her the peanut I had spit out, she denied the whole ordeal. Now, even though Oberweis has almost killed me twice and hasn’t even come close to accepting at least partial responsibility, I still wouldn’t post a negative review about them. What ended up pushing me over the edge was an incident at Jewel Osco directly adjacent to Oberweis. While grocery shopping with my siblings, a woman I had never seen before or remembered approached me and began to say hi. Confused I asked who she was. Her response? «Oh I work at Oberweis. We call you the peanut girl.» The peanut girl? I mean it’s hardly an insult and I know she didn’t mean it as such, but to me that was incredibly rude. I am far more than my allergies & to define someone in such simple terms and to go out of your way to do so, is disrespectful and bad manners. Not to mention, it was incredibly embarrassing. I was mortified to hear that they’ve nicknamed me at their establishment and likely have joked or complained about me. Food allergies aren’t a joke or something to be taken lightly. The severity of my allergies could easily end my life in a matter of minutes and they almost have. The fact that Oberweis showed blatant disregard for a customers health is just appalling and disturbing. I am extremely disappointed in this establishment and do not recommend ordering from here if you have any kind of food sensitives, chances are they’ll mess it up and then blame you for it.

Ice cream is good, but for the prices I do not go here often. Reminds me of an old day ice cream shop. It’s nice to have plain old ice cream since these days there are frozen yogurt places all over the place. We used to get milk here when we first moved out here, but it’s just too expensive and inconvenient. People are always nice at this one. The place could use a little sprucing up compared to all the trendy yogurt places that are up on there game! Ice cream’s ice cream though, that will never change and who can complain!

Aside from the fact that it gets TOO busy in here and the worker bees needs two extra hands each, this place is the best. Honestly everyone reading this, all other ice creams need to get on their knees and kiss the ground Oberweis ice cream walks. It’s literally the best friggin ice cream in this freakin world. I wish ever person in the world could have Oberweis. My fav, cookies n cream…

The guy working at this Oberweis this afternoon was extremely friendly. He offered us a few samples, but we already knew what we wanted. I went with the key lime pie because I already know it’s awesome — and it was. A single scoop will set you back about $ 4 after tax. Too steep to make it a regular occurrence, but it’s a nice treat once in awhile. This location also has a huge cooler section with plenty of ice cream cakes and milk products.

Oberweis truly is as good as it gets when it comes to ice cream and dairy. I have had a lot of ice cream and a lot of milk in my lifetime; none of it is as good as Oberweis. The butterfat content of their ice cream qualifies it as super-premium. Yes, it is fattening, you’re in an ice cream store, dummy! But it is so delicious if you can spare the extra calories. The service at this place is spectacular. And if they screw something up, it is fixed without hesitation before you even have time to complain. It is expensive, yes, but you’re paying for the quality of the product you’re getting. The milk is exceptional. And the chocolate milk? Best you’re ever going to have. Don’t forget to grab a bottle of egg nog for the holidays. And the raspberry lemonade is darn delicious with some vodka in it!

Overpriced, always a long wait because people stand their deciding and ordering insane things on a simple ice cream cone. I ordered a large waffle cone and came to over six bucks, certainly didn’t taste that good. Give me DQ any day over this place.

For all the health reasons on why milk is awesome for you, Oberweis takes it up a notch and makes milk(and ice cream) freakin’ badass. Let’s talk milk. For those of us that weren’t lucky enough to live in the simplistic time of getting milk delivered to your door and then running off to play catch with Wally and the Beav, Oberweis brings back that old time feeling. Their milk is sold in glass bottles and you can return those bottles(rinsed out) to the store where you got them. The milk is delicious and makes you feel like you’re drinking it right on the farm. There’s something to be said for glass bottles too. It just tastes better, for whatever inexplicable reason. And if you want to feel like June Cleaver, you can still get bottles delivered to your door. They also have chocolate milk(yum) for your kids who won’t drink the white stuff. Now, for the ice cream. When I’m down in the dumps or looking for a good ice cream fix, I crave Oberweis. It’s pretty hefty on the calories, so don’t make it an everyday thing, but it’s good for the once in a while«I need to treat myself before I kill someone» kind of days. I like to get the banana split, which comes with pineapple topping, chocolate(obviously), whipped cream, strawberries, and a cherry on top. The other day, my boyfriend had this life-changing pumpkin shake thing. It was so good and rich, I was almost upset I hadn’t gotten it. I got over it pretty quickly, though, when I dove into my sundae and forgot about all my problems. I feel bad for those who are lactose intolerant because you’re really missing out. For those of you that are not, go indulge!

What’s not to like about Oberweis? This location has plenty of parking, plenty of tables to sit, LOVE the ice cream there and to bring home. My tip is use your Moolah card and build those points so you can get free ice cream!

I have absolutely NO complaints about Oberweis. Then again who does? I got ribbed and ribbed to try Oberweis after moving to the US from Canada. I had bought my milk from them at Jewel and instantly fell in love with it. It’s a must in my fridge now. I finally was able to find a store in Elmhurst, and I ventured out to find it. Being in a strip mall, it’s a smaller store with not a lot of room. Upon entering, there was a long line and a lot of noise … but it really is all worth it. I had picked up a bottle of raspberry lemonade, a bottle of root beer(being the root beer addict that I am), a regular ice cream cone, and a box of chocolates for my husband. The prices are on the expensive side, but again, definitely worth it. I will start off with the cone. The minute I was able to lay my lips on the ice cream, I was deeply in love. The taste is so creamy and fresh. I couldn’t help myself from devouring the whole cone in under 5 minutes, and probably looking very lady like in the process. The root beer was awesome! I don’t believe it is an Oberweis brand, but who cares, it’s good! It’s homemade, so it definitely doesn’t taste like your store bought bottle. The lemonade was just as good as any of the other items. You can tell it’s homemade, there are pieces of lemon floating around in it. Such a wonderful mixture of lemons and raspberry flavor, it’s a little on the tart/bitter side, but a definite thirst quencher and a must try! The chocolates were delectable! Each chocolate has a different flavor, and I believe you can actually choose what flavors you want or just tell them you want a mixture. Very fresh chocolate and they are definitely not lacking on the flavor. Each bite is a swirl of heaven! I am horribly addicted to Oberwies and I am sure they will see me as a regular in the future!

It’s a well-known fact that I love Oberweis Ice Cream. I remember the first time that my dad and step-mom took us to Oberweis when we were kids in Geneva or Batavia, maybe? My step-mom lived in that area, so she was well-versed in the Oberweis Empire long before my dad came along. So rich and creamy… an ice cream lover’s dream come true! Anyhow, one of my niece’s had a school function practically around the corner, so my family suggested a little ice cream treat to celebrate. I skipped dinner and indulged in ice cream instead. There is plenty of parking at this location. They are in a strip mall with a large parking lot. What there isn’t much of is seating. It was crazy busy that evening and there just weren’t enough seats. The staff was friendly… I think Mr. Oberweis literally clones these kids and plops them down into his stores because they are all nice, all smiles, all the time. As usual, the ice cream arrived exactly as ordered. It was served promptly-no melty bowl of sugary goodness here. I can’t decide if this is a good thing or not… the nutrition info is available online. You may decide to skip dinner too. ;-)

The only milk my family will drink. Very good customer service and truly exception consistency. If you opt to indulge leave the calorie counter home and just enjoy!

Funny that I have been in Elmhurst for 8+ years… and I have been into OD3 times. This would be our«home town» dairy. Yes…ice cream is the deal here. Mint chocolate chip for me. It is very good ice cream. They have chess boards here also. Play you for a quart?

The wind chill is at minus 8. It’s dark and cold and this Oberweis is in an ugly little strip mall on the south side of Elmhurst. It’s December. 8:30. And the place is packed with people eating ice cream. Why? Because it’s delicious. Oberweis was my «last meal» when I left Chicago 10 years ago, and when I can, I stop in when I’m in town. The place is connected to a real dairy operation, and the ice creams are rich and satisfying. My fave? The chocolate shake. Order it to have in the store and you’ll get a classic milkshake glass with the rest of the shake in a shake in a frosty cold can. They top it with real whipped cream and a long thin chocolate filled cookie. The shake itself is thick but still drinkable through a straw. … whether it’s minus 8 or 98 degrees.
