OFFTHECHAIN !!. I been looking for a good soul food place that remind me of down south. I’m a country boy. This place doesn’t disappoints, it’s the closest thing to soul food you can get in the DC metro area. Love it. Good and tasty. Mac and cheese is FYE !!

The location looks sketch and outdated however the food was delicious. I had the pork chop platter which came with fries that were perfectly crispy. The woman taking orders was a little rude and annoying but what can you expect this isn’t sweetie pies lol. Overall I recommend this restaurant if you’re in the mood for some good soul food.

Visited on November 29, 2015 and the older lady barely opened her mouth. Almost acted as if we were bothering her. She is not friendly at all! Not one smile or a thank you for your business was ever attempted. When you own a small business, a repeat customer should be your goal! Not sure if I will return based on my first impression. The place looks very old and outdated. Mac and Cheese was a but salty. Collard greens were good. Chicken was tasty. Yams not super sweet. The lady in the front still has left a salty taste in my mouth that I cannot wash away… I probably will never come back.

Them Yams Tho… I have tried the fried fish, mac n cheese and candied yams. The meal was very delicious and servings sizes were good. All in all, I would always go back for the candied yams which is heavenly!

The food is very delicious. Not crazy about the Mac n cheese. A little too cheesy for my taste. The fried fish is amazing ! Land the cornbread is sweet like I like

Perfect for a chill Sunday & Football. Trout was seasoned well, sides(mac & yams) never disappoint.

The fried chicken here is HEAVENLY! You must try it. The macaroni cheese was ALRIGHT, yams were really tasty as well as corn bread. Not much for décor but the food was good. One thing is when you go to pay at the end of the meal the woman was looking over my pen to see if o would tip and I felt obligated to in that moment. No one waits on you, you pick up your own food when it’s ready. Throw away your own food get up and pay the cashier upon leaving. I’m confused why there exists a tip line at all. That would be the only downside of this restaurant.

Literay the best macaroni and cheese Ive ever had. The cornbread, sweet potatoes and fried chicken were really good as well! Good food when I don’t feel like driving to my Grandma’s to have her cook for me! Only thing, the Potato Salad was not too good… maybe too much celery salt.

This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Arlington/falls church. It looks a little seedy, but is a diamond in the rough. Their focus is clearly on the food and they nail it every time. Definitely get the fried chicken, but know that you’ll be waiting at least 20 minutes for it. It’s worth it to get fresh fried chicken. I wasn’t a fan of the collard greens, but the mashed potatoes are my kind of perfect lumpiness. The gravy is clearly homemade — no powdered reconstituted nonsense here. Pair it with the Mac and cheese for some carb-loaded comfort food.

Been here a few times and the food is just«ok». But their cabbage is good. I came here today in the middle of the afternoon(around 4pm) and although the hours indicated that they were open and the«Open» sign was lit… the doors were locked and no one was around! Smh. I suggest they get more staffing, update their facilities including getting a new street sign just so that customers won’t miss the turn to get there.

Grade. A. Soul Food! My oh My. first off, I took a bite into the mac n cheese. words have not been invented yet to describe how good it tasted! The greens were not sweet or salty and I put a dash of hot sauce and vinegar on it and made it great! I ordered the fried fish dinner and it was fried perfectly! I’ll definitely be coming back! Go support this«hole in the wall»!

The food was not really that good… had the baked chicken that was greasy and the staff acts as though they don’t like Black people. Like seriously? I tried to give this place a second chance, but they will not get my business. Nasty attitudes made the food taste just as nasty… :(#thanksforreading

I’ve eaten here quite a few times and the quality and taste of the food seems to be diminishing with every visit. The service was once very friendly and playful. However, my most recent experiences have been the opposite. I called in an order for take-out and the woman I spoke to over the phone seemed very annoyed and was extremely rude. I almost changed my mind right then and there, but decided to go ahead and complete my order because other people in my household were hungry as well. Once we got there to pick up our order, I believe the same woman whom I spoke with over the phone was the one who served us inside, because she was extremely rude as well and acted as if we were disturbing her precious time. She was an older lady with straight grey hair. The place also had an awful stench to it. Nonetheless, I was very polite and nice to her even though the attitude was not reciprocated. Once a paid for my food my boyfriend want to check to make sure the order was correct. As soon as we sat our food on the table of the completely empty restaurant, she rushed over to us and said to us in an extremely rude attitude that they don’t do call-in orders for dining in. I was completely heated at that point, so I just looked at my boyfriend and said let’s go. Once we got home and started digging in, we were very disappointed at what we received. The taste was NOT very good as it once was and the quality was awful. We didn’t even make it halfway through before we trashed it. Needless to say they have just lost my business and any possible referrals. If you want really good soul food with really friendly service, go to Carolina Kitchen. Their food is amazing and they are so very nice. The atmosphere is more than delightful! Skip this place!!!

If you’re looking for some down home soul food, then this is the place. Every once in awhile you just gotta put down the low fat, gluten-free, low cal sushi and pick up a thick, juicy pork chop. Or how ’bout some cat fish with collard greens & cornbread, all washed down with homemade sweet tea? And for desert? Apple pie made from scratch. Excuse me, gotta run

No frills soul food that’s hit-or-miss. I’m the«not raised on soul food but appreciates it» type many other reviews mention this place is best suited to. I’m also an optimist, so I gave them 4 stars. The ribs were pretty solid — most bites were tender and the BBQ sauce(crucially) was great. The sides(red beans & rice, baked beans) were also borderline 4 star. But the fries put ‘bla’ in bland and the fried chicken(dark meat) left me longing for Popeye’s. Avoid those and you can have a pretty enjoyable meal here.

Really should be 3.5 stars. Fried fish was spot on and portion size was generous. The fried chicken lacked flavor and had greasy crust.

I typically don’t write a review unless I feel my review adds something not mentioned in other reviews. There seems to be a divide here between people who grew up on soul food and those seeking a «soul food» experience. If you grew up in a family/culture where soul food wasn’t «soul food» but just«good food your grandma made» this place may not be for you. Besides, it’s gonna be hard to compete with your grandma’s perfectly seasoned fried chicken that tasted even more delicious after enduring a four hour, mid summer church service. lol Better enjoy and wash it down with some sweet tea because you know you’re going back for evening service as well. However, for people without those reference points this restaurant is perfectly acceptable…

As I am from North Carolina, I love my Soul Food. So I was craving it, and decided to come here. I orderd the pork chop platter with mac and cheese, and my girlfriend ordered the catfish platter with the same. The porch chops were rather salty and a bit on the crispy side, while my girlfriends catish was yummy and succulent. A little hot sauce made it a little better. The mac and cheese were mushy for me. They were unrecognizable and had no real taste of home made. The collard greens were ok… nothing to rave about. And the cornbread tasted like a peice if cake. .with jiffy mixed in. The sweet tea was 1.50 and only one size. Dont eat the sweet potato pie. Seriously. …it has no flavor. Its overpriced, but not worth the trip. You can make an entire pork chop meal for 4 for how much you paid for one meal. I will just go to DC or Maryland to eat some soul food. No offense because they were rather nice.

I have been craving fried chicken for sometime now and finally let Unilocal lead me here. As reported by others, the chicken is indeed moist inside with a nice crisp to the skin. It tastes of chicken — nothing more, nothing less. No fancy breading, little to no spicing. If you like that kind of fried chicken(which I frequently do), then it is quite good. It’s definitely the best I’ve had in the area though, to be fair, that isn’t really saying much; we’re too far north for good Southern fried chicken to be commonplace.(Really, what I wanted was a nice buttermilk wash and some cornflake-based breading, so if anyone has any idea where to get THAT in the area outside of someone’s grandma’s kitchen, please let me know.) I got the collard greens(boiled), and mashed potatoes and gravy as sides while my friends both ordered pulled pork platters, one with mac n cheese and red beans n rice, the other with mac n’ cheese and, I think, cabbage(also boiled). The potatoes were good — mashed with the skins on like I like ‘em, but the gravy was so thin and watery! The mac and cheese was quite tasty, though admittedly I only had a little taste. Red beans n’ rice were meh — unseasoned beans, slightly overcooked rice, too much watery brothy stuff. Cabbage and collards both oversalted. Pork, while tender with a decent base flavour, also too salty. Cornbread was so-so. It was also more expensive than I expected. I paid about $ 20 for my platter(¼ white meat chicken and the two sides) and one bottled beer. Little pricey for a place that won«best bargain restaurant» so many years in a row some time back. I might return to sooth another chicken craving, but that’d be it. Better BBQ and sides can defintiely be found elsewhere — Rocklands is an excellent example.

I went here because of my current craving for fried chicken. The chicken was just ok. I was immediately turned off by all the grease that you could see coming out of the chicken. I just don’t want to reminded of all the lard that goes into creating a dynamite, crispy fried chicken. I had a side of the candied yams. They were a decent size but I thought the price was too high. Overall, this place is not a bad spot. The ambience leaves much to be desired and the staff seemed«bothered» that I had to take my time ordering.
