WHATHAPPENEDTOTHEKOLACHESHOPPE? Let me help you with that. I had the day off and thought I’d run over to the Eastside and get some delicious kolaches. Back in the 80s/90s this place used to be a landmark. I get over to Brentwood Stair Rd where it’s been FOREVER and it’s moved to Handley Dr. I used my Waze app to navigate over there. I could not find the shop for the life of me. I looked everywhere! After circling the area for a while I finally see an itty bitty little sign with letters that says«Kolaches». I think, «That’s it!» Omg I’m so excited… I go around to the back of the bldg because I don’t see an entrance to this«café». I find a back door. I sneak in and head upstairs to what looks like someone’s house or antique store only to find the cases are completely empty!!! It’s barely 9am. The owner said they ran out of kolaches. How many did you make?! So he says he has sausage rolls. Oh boy! Just like in the olden days! I can’t wait!!! I’ll take a dozen. I race downstairs and in the privacy of my car, I want to gobble them all down. Until I do. Then I wanted to vomit and throw the rest out the window. What the heck happened to the KOLACHESHOPPE we all knew and loved?! When something is good. Don’t change it. I wanted to surprise my mom with a box of kolaches/sausage rolls. Even after heating them up… they tasted sour — see pic. So what was the Kolache Shoppe remains only a distant memory. Maybe their fruit kolaches are good, but judging by the sausage rolls… I’ll just have to wait until my next trip to West, Texas.
